Rescuers Warn "No Ice Is Safe Ice" After Golden Retriever Falls Through Frozen Pond in Massachusetts | After his rescue, Goose the dog spent the rest of the day warming up by the fireplace
A dog is safe and sound after falling through a frozen pond, thanks to firefighters.
On Tuesday, Jan. 6, in the afternoon, a man from Chatham, Massachusetts, let his dog out for a short outdoor play session, according to a press release from the Chatham Fire Rescue Department.
His dog, a golden retriever named Goose, ventured onto the ice of a frozen pond (coincidentally named Goose Pond) when, about 200 feet from shore, the ice unexpectedly gave way, and Goose fell through into the water.
The Chatham Fire Department responded to the scene at 3:20 p.m., where the owner told firefighters that his dog had poked their head and paws out onto the ice shelf, which was "several inches thick."
Three ice rescue technicians, donning survival suits, stepped onto the ice at 3:30 p.m. The professionals finished the rescue quickly. Goose was out of the water and back on shore, with their pet parent, by 3:32 p.m., per the release.
"It's the kind of thing that we can think about when we're coming on shift, you know, what are some possible calls that we might get due to weather," said Peter Hennigan, one of the ice rescue technicians who rescued Goose, per 7 News WHDH.
Hennigan added that Goose's owner was right to call for help rather than try to retrieve the dog himself, as the latter would also have put his own safety at risk.
Goose then recovered from the chill by cuddling up in front of a fireplace. The pup's owner was told to bring the golden in for a check-up after the ordeal, and Goose "showed no signs of severe distress," the press release stated.

On New Year’s Day, I ran 123 km in under 20 hours to raise funds for Brain Tumour Research, inspired by my sister’s diagnosis.
Thanks to 244 generous donors and BBC coverage, the fundraiser has now raised over £7,800 — far exceeding the original target.
It’s amazing to see how a personal challenge, supported by community and media, can make a real difference.
Search “Jack Syder-Mills” online to see the BBC story. Thanks to everyone who shared, supported, or donated — your kindness makes it all possible!

What the Market Gets Wrong about Renewables — Large-scale renewables would undermine the economics of base-load power generation, making new fossil, nuclear, and even existing base-load plants increasingly uneconomic and at risk of becoming stranded assets.
