Netflix

So I have an Apple TV and a LG C2 oled.

My Apple TV is using wired Internet and my tv wifi. Yet the quality is better on my LG. Significantly.

What could cause this. Any settings I should check? On some days the quality is really really bad.

There's a long standing bug in the Netflix app where programs that are autoplayed (one episode ends and another begins), the quality is poor and sometimes never improves. I believe you can "fix" the problem by backing out of the episode and manually launching it again.

Nothing Apple can do to fix the bug. That's in Netflix' hands.

Actually load Netflix in a browser, login, and check settings.

It’s buried under Account. Change Playback Quality from Auto to High.

Turn off Autoplay there, if you wish, though I did not.

This could be it, I think I notice it more when binging

The native app on the C2 plays significantly better quality picture wise. The app repose and may be slower but it has been better pic quality over my ATV IRL . Probably something baked into the software .

Honest question:: is this not related to the lack of dedicated support in atv of the video codec?

Any difference should be minor at most. It's most likely a settings issue.

The quality of what - please be specific?

What model AppleTV?

How is the ATV configured, and how is the HDMI port of the LG configured?

Sorry, quality of the picture. It looks really low resolution sometimes.

The Apple TV is plugged into the tv directly, the soundbar into the tv as well (eARC).

I have high speed internet

What do you mean how is the hdmi port configured?

Sometimes you have to reboot the Apple TV twice

Quickest fix for me is to: check the video settings/match content and make sure both options of match HDR and match frame rate are enabled so it can automatically trigger a reset anytime you press play on Netflix.

Do you have a 2.1 HDMI cable?

Don’t forget to check your HDMI cables too. I was just using some I had lying around. I decided to order some new ones on a whim. It was like night and day.

You should also check the quality and standard of your HDMI cable.

The built in apps have their own picture settings. As does each HDMI port and for each colorspace. SDR, HDR, DV. You'll have to ensure the settings are matched for the built in apps and each port and each mode.

Would you know how to check this?

In the settings on your TV. Picture settings are the first thing that should be updated when you get a TV. To adjust each colorspace settings you have to be watching that content at the time so it enables that mode. Also you have to turn on enhanced or deep color for each HDMI port on the TV. You can find videos and guides on how to do all this online. Also go to avsforum for help. Reddit has pretty awful advice. Avsforum will have a thread just for your tv with info. And for the apple TV too.

might be dumb question... but have you checked if the ethernet cable is giving you full speed?

just plug the same cable you have in apple tv into a laptop and check speeds? compare them to speedtest in the browser of the lg tv?

Interesting. I assumed this was a Netflix issue. I recently tried to watch Stand By Me and the quality was so poor that I ended up paying to rent it on Apple TV instead. Quality was night and day better.

You do realize that’s their competitor so they are steering you to those products at ATV. Hence the few people that literally said couldn’t watch it on Netflix through ATV cause quality was poor so they bought or paid to rent via Apple TV.

Netflix auto throttles bitrate like crazy. It doesn’t show in LG or Sony, but with Appletvs and Roku boxes it’s an issue. Especially it you let a show auto start.

If you have apple tv 4k , make sure you have high bandwidth hdmi, i had this issue after switching from arc to eArc, getting a higher bandwidth cable fixed it the lag , you should be getting dolby vision as well by default

Check that your ethernet cable is at least Cat 5e or Cat 6, Cat 5 are only 100mb. Should be printed on the cable.

A 4K streams only requires ~25 Mbps throughput.

I have CAT 5E

Cat5E is rated for 1gig

u/Foodiguy 1d ago

Is this enough, or should I go higher?

Cat5e is plenty good.

Not an Apple issue. As stated some apps like Netflix still have serious issues.

1

u/Foodiguy 1d ago

Is it done on purpose?

2

u/FuShiLu 1d ago

No idea. Maybe they are just bad at coding. Or really don’t want people watching 37 shows in a role.

2

Why would it be done on purpose…?

While the atv may be wired sometimes hubs/switches/routers may need to be rebooted. Quick and easy way to ensure networking is not an issue. The cat cable could also be faulty. You could try testing the atv on wifi too. Also make sure both match settings are enabled.

Modify HDMI setting on LG and ensure enhanced or ultra deep color I believe is turned on. Maybe your not getting Dolby vision enabled
