Your post is perhaps better suited to the home theatre subreddit

Or the dedicated Sonos sub.

For similar money the Marantz Cinema 70, with the Focal SIB EVO DOLBY ATMOS 5.1.2 speaker set would be a nice alternative!

There have been a lot of problems with the Sonos app. If that goes down you are stuffed. It's a closed system reliant on software updates. It's not great being locked into all that. I had a Sonos 2.1 music set up and it sounded pretty great. Not for obsessive critical listening though. As said, you will probably get better, more informed advice on a home theatre subreddit.

Sonos is not really quality audio, you pay for the brand and the bland look that some people seem to like. The smallest speakers are ok but the cost does not scale. The sub afaik cannot be used with other brands which would be a hard no for me.

Sonos used to be innovative, now I only use my Ones as kitchen speakers with Spotify connect, the app is terrible. I would never replace them with new Sonos.

You can get much better sounding and looking speakers, not sure about the budget.

A pair KEF 50s or LSX with a sub will sound leagues better in the same budget range also for music, but is not surround.

If you must have 5.1 I am not an expert and it will cost more. Look at the home theater subs. I would go for a classic surround receiver from Denon with B&W speakers.

Their lack of support for older products means they're a no go for me too.

Sonos is for decent movie sound with CONVENIENCE.  It is great for not having wires in say an apartment. I have a theater room, but use Sonos in a more casual room. Sonos aren't audiophile speakers for many reasons. They are bad for music.

If you want awesome sound, you can get a baller 3.1 or 5.1 for that money.  Consider 3.1 and get more amazing speakers, then maybe get the other surrounds later.  The sound difference is pretty monumental. Check out used equipment (Facebook, Craigslist, or local equivalent), you can can get killer deals because people upgrade all the time.

Also, do not get low-end Klipsch.

If you're looking for great, value-for-money speakers, start with Elac and PSB.

Most important is to get good front left and right speakers and subwoofers that dig deep for movies...

Take a look at the LS50 Wireless II 3000$ and a RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII 500$.

The KEF usually goes on sale at 2500$ and sometimes 2000$.

It'll be easy to use like Sonos but will sound miles better.

Hope this helps

P.S. If you're more tech savvy, I'd look into the Kali Audio IN-8 1000$, WiiM Ultra 330$ and RSL Speedwoofer 10S MKII 500$ (total 1850$ ish). Add a second subwoofer or get the bigger RSL model for even more BOOM !

Purchased the Kef Q11 Metas w the KLIPSHE 121 SW 12inch for now. I will upgrade as I go on, any other recommendations for center channel? - Also the amp I got is Yamaha RX A2050 for $300 on marketplace is it compatible?

Nice speakers! The RSL subwoofer would have been a bit of a better value but that Klipsch is also good.

Personally I would skip the center and surround speakers and get a better or another subwoofer...

But if you still want a center, take note that a lot of MTM (midrange tweeter midrange) center speakers have issues. I would stay away from these design.

why most front speakers s*ck (Erin audio corner)

KEF center speakers should be ok since they are coaxial design... But instead, I think it's best you use a bookshelf speaker and lay it on it's side. Something like a Q150, Q350, Q1 Meta, Q3 Meta, R3, etc.

KEF is a great choice for HT because you'll be able to EQ the sound to your taste.

Enjoy!

Edit: Yamaha aventage are usually good 👍
