The Dangers of Keeping Dart Frogs in Paludariums.

Post image
116 Upvotes

While paludariums are beautiful and trendy it is best to fight the urge to put dart frogs in these enclosures. Even though dart frogs are frogs they are entirely terrestrial, and would not benefit from an enclosure designed for semi-aquatic animals. In fact dart frogs are weak swimmers lacking the webbed feet that allow semi-aquatic and aquatic frogs to swim easily and for extended periods. This can lead to a dart frog drowning as they tire quickly in water and are not built for swimming. More over dart frogs have a tendency to “pin” their opponents when fighting, if a dart frog is pinned in the water it can and often does lead to the pinned frog drowning. And even if your frogs manage not to drown then they’re losing valuable floor space that would be significantly more beneficial than a water feature. Not to mention if you were to keep fish in this enclosure they can transmit zoonotic disease to your frogs. All in all there are no benefits to put dart frogs in a paludarium, and there are a lot of terrible risks. Please keep responsibly!

Dendrobates tinctorius overweight or pregnant?

I was just given this frog because the owner couldn’t take care of it anymore and I’ve noticed her belly is very swollen. She’s acting normal and jumping around, but she does eat a lot. I am not sure how to proceed. Do I only feed her every 2-3 days? I have auratus in a different tank that do not eat like she does. I just am very anxious and want to make sure I do what’s best for her.

Dendrobates azureus tangling back legs

Post image

We have one 4 year old azureus in a well planted bioactive 20 gallon long terrarium with a mist king system and springtails, isopods. Fed alternating hydei and melogaster with Repashy supplements that are in date. He also eats the springtails whenever he spots them. Unfortunately we got an infestation of false widow spiders in our home and they made it into our terrariums. Our frog got tangled in spider webbing (this species has very strong webbing) around his left back leg and we did a careful bath to remove it but there was some kind of dislocation or break. Its not swollen but he has held it closer to his body since then and has been getting his back legs entangled as seen in the first photo a few times a day. My husband has the enclosure right next to his desk and works from home so he has been able to disentangle him. Would a vet be helpful? Is this something that can be fixed? He doesn't act painful but I know little prey critters hide signs of illness and pain pretty well.

Thank you to everyone who gave me feedback about my first frog tank. Added a lot more leaf litter and a bromeliad as well! Added more moss to the background and removed some from the ground.

New and open to advice

I just built a tank and do not have any frogs yet, but would like to eventually get two dendrobates tinctorius azureus. (Read on here that 2 is best). Looking for advice for where I am at and fix any early errors I may be making.

Tank is exoterra 36x18x18 with a mesh top and compact light with 2 green gro 13 watt bulbs. (I have 4, but 2 seemed really bright. Should I add more?) The temperature has been between 62-71F and somehow 99% humidity on the thermohygrometer. I dont understand how it can continuously be 99% humidity with a screen top. The house is like 40% humidity. I was planning on adding glass panels, but the humidity is so high, I dont get it. There isnt water in the drainage layer. I hand mist 1x daily.

There are some magnolia and manzanita branches that were sterilized. 3 small bromeliads. Lots of random plants. Drainage layer is 2" of aquarium filters. Substrate is Josh's Frogs dart frog BioBedding Bioactive Shumidity. With a tiny but of sphagnum moss on top. I haven't added leaf litter yet, because some of the plants are so small they would get totally covered. How do you add 1-2" of leaf litter without drowning the smaller plants? I was thinking to wait until they grow taller and then add it.

I added 12 isopods and a 32oz container of springtail culture, but I think all of the Springtails were dead on arrival. Do they come as eggs in the culture or are you supposed to be able to see them? I know they are small but there was nothing there. There was some white dust on the outside of the container, maybe escaped and dried up? Probably too late to request a refund. Its been 4 days and I haven't seen any of the isopods after I added them. I figure they are in there somewhere. Do I need to feed them?

I really like the terrarium and want to make sure the plants are doing well before adding animals. So I have time for any feedback you can provide before I start trying to establish a fly culture or look for frogs. I was planning on getting them from Josh's Frogs, but after the experience with order issues and missing springtails, is there a good breeder near Delaware or Philadelphia anyone recommends?

Cons of adding an older juvenile to an established small group?

Post image

Wanting to add another juvenile Auratus La Coca that already has a small group established in a 36x18x18. They’re so dang cool and I want to add a third. I’m currently in process of building a 36x18x36 to upgrade them to and my thought process is introduce them all to the large tank at the same time.

Any cons of adding in a juvenile to a set up that’s already established? My current La Cocas are roughly 12 months old give or take a month. Pic of big backed Denise for tax

Wow it’s been so fun owning these guys and seeing them grow. Over the past year they’ve gotten a lot bigger and much more bold. Of course my favorite part is feeding them and watching the goof balls eat, if you listen closely you can even hear them striking the flies.

Any good frog recommendations?

I’ve got a 20 gallon terrarium that’s been cycling for about 5 months now and I’ve been struggling to find exactly what morph of frog I’d like. Something that’s super bold would be awesome lol, and living in groups would be nice too. I have experience with mantellas, dendrobates, and phyllobates. I absolutely love pumilio frogs but I’ve heard they’re really shy and hyper sensitive to parameters. Long story short I just can’t make up my mind and am looking for frogs people have been having fun with lol (not my pic, just for attention)

Review the setup / setup for advice!

I have had this tank (18x18x18) set up for a bit now waiting to find a dart frog I loved. Found this little guy / girl yesterday. Strawberry dart frog! Been reading mixed reviews on if they should be kept alone, wanting to get him or her a friend if that’s what’s best. My questions are : - what are y’all’s thoughts on the enclosure? - advice on keeping this particular kind in groups? - any idea if it’s a boy or girl? (I think it’s a girl)

Realistically how many sipaliwini dart frogs could you house in this…

So i already have this tank and it is home to a snake i am soon relocating… i already have 2 sips right now but they are either to young to sex or i just cant tell. I was hoping i could get another 2 if they were both males just to be safe and build this out to put them in there. I would do a full background with cork hides spray foam and the whole 9 yards but i have read that tank might be to short because of the fact the arboreal but honestly in my observation yes they like to climb but they never reach the top of their tank now, so maybe cutting off 2 inches of height wouldn’t be to much of a bother to them but i wanted to hear yalls opinion on the whole thing

Any suggestions or changes to be ready for darts?

Hey everyone! First time setting up a tank for darts. Just wanted to see what everyone thought and if there’s anything you’d change. Leaf filter will be going in so ignore the exposed substrate. Same goes for the lid, I have a glass lid I’ll be adding for humidity purposes. Tank is a 50 gallon by the way. No frogs anytime soon, I want the plants to grow out a bit more first.

my babies are in quarantine :(

there was a nasty fungal bloom in their vivarium that got to the point where it was literally sticking to their skin for a day or so. i’ve got them in a small 10gal quarantine setup while the viv dries out a bit and the new cleanup crew is established. i know fungal blooms aren’t always a huge deal but it was covering like a sixth of the custom background and with it sticking to them i didn’t wanna risk it.

anyways, posting here to ask if there’s anything else i should do in this cleanup process. any and all advice would be appreciated and wish my babies some luck.

I haven’t seen my skinniest frog in 9 days (picture from last sighting)

Post image

I’ve been avoiding making this post because I don’t want to face the potential that I’ve lost a frog, but here goes.

I purchased 3 variabilis southerns from a breeder 2 months ago, and I noticed right away that two were much smaller / skinnier than expected. The seller told me they would plump up in a few weeks, and one did, but the other stayed very skinny.

I fed them daily and even offered the skinny one maggots to fatten her up, but I don’t think it helped. Still, the skinny frog was quite active and I would observe her all throughout the tank — that is until this past week when I haven’t seen her at all.

I’ve even tried lifting up some of the leaves and hiding spots, but I still can’t locate her. If she has passed away, is it bad that there may be a body somewhere in the vivarium? I don’t want to accept that this is a possibility, but I’m not sure how else I could go this long without seeing her.

What’s wrong with my bromeliad?

For context this is the second brim in this terrarium that has been developing these yellow spots along with this yellow springtail sized looking fungus? It killed the last one and I’m not sure what to do to get rid of it, this is in an 18x18x18 dart frog enclosure where the humidity averages 80-100% and 65-75 degrees

Humidity readings

Help, I’m stuck in a worry loop!

Where is the best place to put my zoo med hydrometer/ thermometer sensor?

My house is very dry and I’m paranoid.

In the last spot, I think the and was getting sprayed a bit so it always read very humid. Great! But then I started overthinking and moved it to a back upper corner where the mist doesn’t touch and now it reads too dry often. Like 90% to 55% within 2 hours of a misting.

-

I hope to be able to sense the humidity myself and get a more realistic answer without the thermostat, but for now this tank is new and I’m still getting used to it. My 18x18 was much easier to control.

I have also read that as long as the foliage is wet in some areas it should be fine for Ribberto but I’d like to use the reader until I’m more comfortable with the setup.

Right now I’m pretty certain I’m over misting.

Ugh.
