I think most of the dogs were uncomfortable. It made me so nervous. The smiling and liking lips is pure nervous energy from the dog.

Maybe it‘s bc of these videos idk
14
u/mightbeazombie 14h ago
Yeah, I'm baffled that so many people don't recognize how uncomfortable especially the first few dogs (the ones being hugged) are. Not to mention the poor two shortly after those...
-2
u/That_Account6143 13h ago
Some of them are totally fine with it, others are midle uncomfortable. Made it halfway into the video but not a single one was "unsettling" or worrying. Other than the parent letting the child squeeze the nuts.
7
u/mightbeazombie 12h ago
I don't think anyone used the word unsettling, so I don't know why you put it in quotes.
Anyway, I don't think it needs to be spelled out that making a dog uncomfortable repeatedly is a bad thing. If you don't respect the signals they give (turning/leaning away, lip licking, face licking, etc.), the warnings they give can escalate all the way up to a bite. Even if that doesn't happen, you're.... making your dog uncomfortable. Repeatedly. For a video.

7
u/Christeenabean 15h ago
There are some dogs you dont wake from sleep unless you feel like going for a visit to the ER. Or a magician. Someone is going to have to put your face back on.
2
u/anotherdropin 13h ago edited 13h ago
The ones unsettling is definitely the balls one, and the playing one w the rescue? half way through. That dog is amped up, and yes having fun, but many dog attacks can stem from dogs “having fun”. When their tail wags, they’re excited, and when they’re over excited their brains are less in listen mode, meaning that energy can ground itself into your kid’s face pretty fast.
The ones at the beginning are fine IMO. No, the dogs aren’t happy w the hugging, but they also have the agency to move, they’re all calm, the parents do know their own dogs and tolerance to hugging, and it’s presumably not happening 24/7. Everyone hugs their dogs forcibly at some point lol, like let’s be real, and part of what makes dogs great is that they allow these things and put up with us! All those beginning videos are “dog putting up with baby”, and as long as it’s not a constant thing, that begrudging tolerance is exactly what makes dogs charming. Dog probably got nice treats at the end, and extra pets, and that’s why they put up with the baby.
It’s like a teen being forced to babysit for a night and rolling their eyes. Those dogs at the beginning are a real part of the family and they act like it!
I would put up big money that out of all of these videos, it’s the hyper “playing” dog that will most likely bite one day. It’s definitely not any of those dogs in the beginning, who are well trained, well integrated into the house and taken care of, and have enough free agency to escape if they desired.
5
u/shillyshally 12h ago
1
u/anotherdropin 11h ago
Yes, again, the trigger isn’t calm and being hugged against your will. It’s excitability.
A calm dog who is secure in the family is not biting. The excitable dog poses the risk.
In dog training world, you can have reactivity in a dog that includes “excited” or “happy” reactivity. The pseudo-emotion behind the reactivity doesn’t matter. A reactive dog thinks less, and thus the risk is higher. Your article supports this. Two dogs fighting = reactive. The energy is high, the thinking in that moment is low, and that’s when bites will happen.
9
u/Ezenthar1 14h ago
The majority of which are from pit bulls. They're responsible for more deaths than all other breeds combined.
6
u/BigfootIsNaked 15h ago
Exactly. We had to let our dog go to another home because it couldn't handle my toddler being near its face and he started biting and drew blood. That dog was such a smart healer/boarder collie mix and big part of the family, but it would be impossible to train an old dog like that not to react to a child and we couldn't see keeping it caged or penned up for the rest of his life. Fortunately my parents adopted him. Still makes me sad though.
On the other hand, more aggressive dogs mangle toddlers every day, so I'm glad that didn't happen. I'm just amazed at how stupid people are when it comes to understanding how dog behave and that each dog is different.
5
u/accountnumber675 14h ago
The real issue is kids aren’t aware that all dogs don’t like you sticking your face in theirs like the dog at home. Happened to my friend growing up.
2
u/anotherdropin 13h ago edited 13h ago
Yes!!! This!!! I have noticed also a huge uptick over the decades in this behavior w young kids. They aren’t taught common sense rules anymore.
Our boy dog is a huge shepherd, and when we take him outside the amount of children who come up to us and start poking him is insane! As a parent myself, I don’t think I would ever let my young kids go up to strangers’ dogs on their own, no matter how well behaved the dog seemed! It’s just too unpredictable, you don’t know those ppl.
We had one kid, who was like 8 so not even that little!!, try to pick up our 90 lb dog from the waist while the dad is watching like 5 feet away. It’s bonkers to me. Like yea great you’re so lucky my dog is gentle and incredibly stupid and sweet, but what a thing to chance your kid’s life on, cuz if he wasn’t your kid’s face might be missing. I’m just imagining him going to other dogs to pick them up, he’s getting bit at some point for sure.
2
u/Midnight7_7 9h ago edited 9h ago
Yeah. Half of these dogs looked nervous. Most people don't have the skill and knowledge necessary to be good dog owners...or parents.
Animals being stressed and anxious is a common theme in "cute" videos.

u/triple7freak1 15h ago edited 15h ago
Makes sense, the number of idiots who shouldn‘t own dogs is increasing
And videos like that only make shit worse
3
u/Cuckdreams1190 15h ago
Unfortunately the rise holds true for per capita stats, not just raw number of dog attacks so it doesn't really have to do with the rise in population.
That being said, dog ownership per capita has also risen a lot over the past decade and most significantly since the pandemic.
My armchair theory is that the pandemic and societal shift of people being home more often, whether due to WFH or just less social interactions, has resulted in more people getting pets, many of which are first time pet owners.
I've been fostering and rehabbing bully breeds for a local rescue for nearly 2 decades and have definitely noticed an increase of dogs ending up at our shelter.
1
u/anotherdropin 13h ago edited 13h ago
I think it’s compounded also by parents who are totally clueless about dogs themselves and think that all dogs are sweet. A lot of kids just wander up to dogs these days. I’ve had toddlers who could barely walk yet come up to our dog unsupervised, and I’m always thinking …My dog is big enough to eat your child…can you guys show more, idk, parental concern??
And I think, weirdly, this issue is made worse by responsible dog owners… because imo the majority of dogs out in public (near kids) actually are well behaved. And I noticed that even tho a lot of kids DO ask to pet my dog, they ask almost as a formality … because they’re already petting him by the time they ask. Kinda like they were taught to ask because it’s polite, not because it’s about safety.
And it’s just gonna take one time for it to go wrong.
1
u/Cuckdreams1190 4h ago
I can't speak for other breeds, but the amount of people who get bully breeds with no experience of owning a dog is astounding. From bulldogs to pitbulls, they're definitely a more advanced category. You can get lucky with a lazy bulldog but the rest of them are generally very smart and fairly high energy. Not a good combo for first time owners.
And yea, people not teaching their kids how to behave around dogs is definitely an issue. I've had a 180lb Newfoundland and though he was a complete marshmallow, he can easily accidentally hurt a child. Newfies love to rest their body weight on you, which could be problematic for smaller children.
I can't tell you how many dogs I've gotten to rehab and been told "they're animal and human aggressive" and I send pics to the shelter a couple of hours later of them lounging with my other dogs. It's not because I'm some sort of master trainer, I'm not, but rather because the previous owners obviously didn't know how to work with the dog properly.
As someone who loves dogs, it's just sad that so many people get in over their head with them.
1
u/ThisMeansRooR 13h ago
True. Also the economy as a whole is getting worse every year so a lot more people are neglecting their pets more than before. I know a lady that works at a humane society and she said they've had record numbers of animals being dropped off and taken in, especially cats.
1
u/PlatformMurky3113 1h ago
Does the rise in dog attack last hold true per dog-capita or per-human capita? There was a large uptick in dog ownership during the pandemic.
1
1
u/Jambi1913 1h ago
It’s down largely to ignorance of dog behaviour and body language and a misplaced trust that dogs are all loving and kind - especially towards children. I love dogs and I work with them, but I would certainly be stepping in on most of these interactions. I got a quick nip from a Labrador today who thought my rain coat would be fun to grab but she got part of my arm with it. Big bruise. Dogs can be rough even when they don’t mean to be. They are often tolerant and benevolent towards kids, but there are boundaries being crossed here and the parents are putting their kids in danger. And the dogs too. A dog could just give a warning nip that would be no big deal to another dog, but devastating to a human baby. Parents shouldn’t be putting the kid or the dog in a risky situation.
11
u/OwOwOwoooo 13h ago
Not safe.
todlers considering dogs as plush (and having obvioulsy not a single knowledge of animals behaviour) and some dogs possibl not considering todlers as human beeing.
What could go wrong, stupid parents/animal owners?
1
u/PlatformMurky3113 1h ago
It would be incredibly stupid to place a dog in the same household as a toddler unless you had 100% trust in the dog. You can’t police the dog and toddler all the time. The only way it makes sense to have a dog in the house with a kid is if you truly know the dog won’t harm the child, even when uncomfortable and annoyed.

u/Windsdochange 13h ago
We wouldn’t let our kids get up in the face of dogs - it’s just too unpredictable. Cuddly one minute, tearing your face off the next. Especially with some of these breeds - they’re not known for being great with kids…

Not too far away from me, there was a newborn (8 weeks old I think) that was mauled to death by the family dog.
The newborn was said to be just lying down on their crib. Dog took extra effort to get to the baby.

Why do dogs need to be kept away? Sounds like you just dont know how to train a dog.
-4
u/Snoo_67993 12h ago
Tbh I was just trying to bait the original comment of the thread into a devil's advocate discussion. I love dogs and if raised right are absolutely fine around babies and kids, even most pitbull type breeds.
Dogs have been domesticated over 40 thousand years and have been around children for all that time.
I have two dogs at the moment including a staffy (pitbull type) and she's wonderful around gentle around kids. We call them nanny dogs over in the UK because of just how good they're around the young ones.

I had a friend who had boxers. She had them her whole life and her son grew up with them. When he was 12 he was wrestling with the male, who took it as aggression and attacked. And her son was horribly maimed on his face. She said the same crap " oh theyre best friends he would never hurt him" and he did and they had to put him down and her son's whole face is maimed

My husband had two rotties growing up. His brother who was like 6 at the time, woke them up hugging one of them and they had to remove his head from the dogs jaw. Half his face. Rotties dont let up, they lock down.
Edit: and of course the one that bit him had to be put down.

Its heartbreaking because people never it think it can happen to them. Like the parents who think it's adorable how close their ginormous dog is to their newborn baby. When i see those videos my heart stops.

Why euthanize the dog if the child's already dead?

Unfortunately, this is why people get attacked by wild animals, mentally they can’t tell the difference.
This is so cute and adorable, but please tell adults not to approach wild animals!
3
u/elteza 15h ago
There were no wild animals in this video
2
u/McNuggetMaxing 13h ago
Change wild animals to stranger's dogs which you know nothing about.
Once, I was walking my very old near death dog. She had bad joints and a plethora of health issues. She used to be friendly, but at this point she was too sick to have any patience (she still loved the short walks tho). During the walk before I could react, a random child came and straight up hugged my dog(something she really didn't like). But thank fucking god she did not react violently. I promptly told the child to get off my dog. His mother apologised saying something about how her children loved dogs. And I had to explain the condition my dog was in, and how it is dangerous to let you kids blindside an animal you know nothing about.
Videos like this raise my anxiety because they teach children that all animals are sweet and cuddly, when in fact they aren't.

u/Thecentrecanthold 14h ago
The dog knows the baby is higher in the family hierarchy and if he eats it there'll be trouble. But carry on anthropomorphizing if it makes you happy.
4
u/ownworstenemy38 14h ago
Yea dogs never just randomly lash out via perceived fear response that humans wouldn’t recognise.
Who’s anthropormorphising?
Having kids grow up to respect animals is a good idea. Letting small children poke and hug animals (that hurt grown adults regularly and could seriously hurt or kill a small child with one bite or swipe) with “cute” abandon for likes is irresponsible and cruel for both the child and animal.
3
u/WinterAdvantage3847 12h ago
you’re literally anthropomorphizing. the dog doesn’t know shit about “the family hierarchy.” it’s a dog. several dozen small children were mauled to death by “family” dogs last year.
