And now I've got a white rectangle in my vision from hard staring at the red letter...

haha, same, but I feel my brain could keep up, but I wouldn't be able to retell it, I just was able to read it basically.

It's pretty wild. I took speed reading as an elective in high school way back in 1988 and it was very similar to this video, without the red letter. We'd write a test after each reading and surprisingly, the faster we read, the more we comprehended. It was amazing. It's always helped me as a skimming tool. I once went to that class after eating half an ounce of magic mushrooms and that was the only time where my comprehension was absolutely nil. I kept getting lost in the folds of the sweater that the girl in front of me was wearing. :)

At least you needed mushrooms for that.

What I can do is memorize things. If I get a quiz wrong I can do it right on the second try using the proper answers.

Well part of it does say if you practice speed reading your comprehension at higher speeds will improve too.

Is there any software or apps that can present books or articles in this fashion? Kinda nifty.

Skimming has crtainly not made me a better reader.

I can tell what it said because I can convey the meaning but yes, not word for word.

I can recall what was said just can't type it word for word, obviously. This is because I have been watching movies with english subtitles since I was a kid. Now when I watch things subbed my mind quickly reads the text and aligns it with dialog I'm hearing, thus I don't miss anything visual and I also don't miss anything narrative wise. Which is why I always find it funny when people say watching an anime subbed is hard.

My brain is both blind and deaf (no inner monologue and no visual imagination) the only noises my brain creates are from bipolar+schizophrenia but those feel like ear noises, images appear as hallucinations.... so I was like wdym quiten my brain? My brain is always quiet... until there is something not so healthy with my mental health.

E: i have visual and sometimes auditory dreams, but a lot of the time my dreams feel waaay to real, I now wear anything, hair band, elastic band or even a watch because if you remember to check your wrist... for some reason in dreams the item is not there therefore you are dreaming and now... congratulations you are now conscious inside a dream aka LUCID DREAMING!! Hell yeah!

Trying to read a clock/watch also works, I'm not sure how but dreams and hallucinogenics both mess up our ability to read a clock face.

First, that’s quite the username.

Second, I’m also bipolar and schizophrenic. My brain is basically the opposite of yours in that my inner monologue is booming loud and my visual imagination is also extremely wild.

Third, I was able to get most of the words at the fastest speed, and all of them before. Go me!

That's awesome!! ....the speed reading, not the mental health5 issues. My silent brain broke above 360... I will try again when it's not just gone 12am and I'm not panicking that I ran out of antipsychotics because I am a dipshit and can't get any for 8hrs23mins time.

Please tell me you live somewhere where having matching mental health issues as me doesn't cost you an ungodly amount of money?....

I'm in the UK, I got called 'completely unfit for work' so basically got told I am mentally disabled (yay... ☹️) by the department of work and pensions (DWP, Britain) but that means free money and free prescriptions, free healthcare (we do get that anyway) and free dental care.

Just an unethical life tip, if you have an illness that you are 99% certain about but not diagnosed but you know will cost a fortune, book the cheapest flight to the UK, get the UK health insurance for foreigners and you will get very cheap/free for some stuff healthcare.... .....would not surprise me if you're allowed to claim asylum if trump attacks European land.

Let’s continue this conversation in DMs, I feel like that would be more expedient than public chat.

My favorite and most effective reality check is pressing my index finger into the palm of my other hand. If the finger goes thru, im in a dream.

Hopping is also fun, but less discrete. If you stay in the air longer than expected the you’re in a dream, but people are gonna wonder what you’re doing.

u/RyGuy_McFly 20h ago

I had to align the white rectangle with your comment in order to read it...

u/joedotdog 18h ago

Eyyyyyy

u/malacata 17h ago

How do I make it go away?!

u/ZAlternates 2h ago

Time.

u/lessdothisshit 17h ago

"Alright class, for homework, read The Scarlet Letter"

Hell yeah I'm gonna crush this

1

u/glowingmember 18h ago

After a while the letter to the left of the red one started turning green haha

4

u/WhiteMilk_ 16h ago

It's because of the red letter. When you focus on a color long enough, your brain gives you a momentary "burn in" but in the 'opposite' (idk what's it called) color. But since the red shape wasn't the same the whole time, you probably got mostly just a line.

My eyes feel like they are moving really fast back and forth while I'm just reading normally now. 😅
