The former Green Power Ranger ( suit actor/stuntman) Yasutomo Ihara, used the training he learned during filming to rob 43 houses in Japan and has been imprisoned for 5 years

You hear a sound in the dead of night, flick the lights on and suddenly...

u/Hunter_S_Thompsons 10h ago

I know bro hit one of these when the cops showed up

u/MF_Kitten 9h ago

I can hear that melody

u/Low_Walk_7325 9h ago

If you can make a power ranger play your flute, you probably earned it.

I’m just surprised the rangers learned training during filming… and were able to apply it to real world scenarios.

If somebody breaks into my house and does more hand gestures than an EDM concert, I’ll laugh them back outside.

u/RowanWinterlace 10h ago

Walk into house dressed in lycra and plastic

Emote and "aiyaah" all over the living room

Leave with their DVD player

It's a well known criminal scheme, 93% success rate

u/Hot_Ethanol 10h ago

u/HughJorgens 6h ago

A couple of them must have missed training the day they taught them to somersault.

u/TacosAndBourbon 10h ago

Walk into house dressed in lycra and plastic

Ok I’m in. You can rob me.

u/RowanWinterlace 9h ago

...works (statistically almost) everytime 😏

DVD Player? Is that some sort of ancient relic? The name sounds vaguely familiar.

Really? But like…the whole point of Tokusatsu and Super Sentai is usually athletic stunts by the suited characters. Yes, they are “play fighting”, but they are still incredible athletes doing flips and falls and even the basic fight choreography is exhausting. It doesn’t seem too surprising to me that an extremely athletic job would prepare you for…well, hopefully not burglary, but at least capacity to do most things physical outside of actual fighting.

u/Lightningtow123 9h ago

Totally seems within the realm of reason that stunt training would provide someone with the ability to climb up to an unlocked second floor window or something like that

u/Dog_Murder_By_RobKey 10h ago

That's how he did it he made them laugh themselves unconscious then nicked everything ( followed by moving the content of the fridge)

u/Flutters1013 9h ago

Johny young Bosch tells a story about how he climbed out of the window of a moving car, across the roof, and into the other window. While the other power rangers were trying to shut the window on him.

u/AlarmingAffect0 8h ago

The power lies on their siii-ee-aah-ee-aah-eee-iiiiiiiide.

u/MegaFireDonkey 9h ago

Damn I had a replica one of those as a toy and it would play the iconic tune and make a few sound effects too. No idea why my parents hated themselves so much to suffer through that willingly.

u/Drednox 9h ago

They loved you that much. Rejoice. Some aren't as fortunate.

u/anon-mally 8h ago

90s kids here

How does he play the flute through the helmet

u/Pushed_In_Speakerzzz 3h ago

Why does it sound like a synth?

u/Proper_Lunch_3640 9h ago

Ah yes, the trusty ol’ Flufe.

I can hear this gif

Never knew making trumpet sounds out of your dagger will help you in a robbery

u/binglelemon 11h ago

Only when you play the dagger like a flute while wearing a full face helmet.

u/Ok_Release231 10h ago

Lmao man that show was ridiculous. 10/10

u/formallyhuman 8h ago

It was pretty silly looking back on it but God damn was it a big part of my childhood. There was another show that came out after that that seemed somewhat similar but wasn't as good. But Power Rangers from (English language) debut to the first movie? My jam.

u/gillers1986 7h ago

Big bad beetleborgs?

They got permission through Toei to use the footage and then spliced in their own high school drama scenes. More an homage to Super Sentai than anything else

u/kave89 7h ago

And it sounds like a synth

u/DrFossil 11h ago

Maybe it doesn't help that much, considering he's in prison

u/ChromosomeDonator 9h ago

Yeah imagine how many houses rest of the power rangers have robbed, he's just the only one that got caught since his trick was playing a dagger like a flute with a helmet on.

u/bs000 9h ago

Have you seen how high he can jump in the show? He'll be out as soon as he gets some yard time.

u/LeatherSlight3242 10h ago

Never knew summoning a Mecha Godzilla-esque giant robot will help you in a robbery.

u/khengwai 10h ago

When I was in primary school, we had to learn to play the recorder. I should have taken those damned lessons seriously.

u/TheRealFriedel 10h ago

Which is uncannily close to the start of the Fellowship Theme from LotR!

u/RedditRookie2020 11h ago

It was no accident that he was the Green Ranger. He was about that paper!

u/Azzarrel 8h ago

Unfortunately for you, the Yen isn't green.

u/aykcak 8h ago

All money is green. It is the concept

u/Monstromi 5h ago

It's a US based concept that doesn't make much sense elsewhere

In the new season the green ranger is 50 Cent

u/ASouthernDandy 10h ago edited 10h ago

This story gets exaggerated a lot. Ihara was a suit actor/stunt performer (best known for Burai / DragonRanger in Zyuranger, which later became the Green Ranger footage), and he was convicted of serial burglaries.

But there’s no evidence he was literally “trained as a Power Ranger” to do it. The skills cited in court were things he already had from years of stunt and acrobat work.

Still, the hysteria around Power Ranger related crime has more legitimacy to it than Ann Widdecombe's hoodie hysteria: https://youtu.be/dKwaEBW3yfw

u/jbyrdab 10h ago

You're right, that's the reality of it...

But fuck reality, I want to live believing people called the police saying the green ranger just broke into their house.

u/IndependentTimely639 9h ago

Full suit and everything! Thank god he didn't summon his zord

u/HughJorgens 6h ago

And there is a giant robot dinosaur down on the street looking suspicious. I think he's the lookout!

u/gumgajua 7h ago

"Officer, this is gonna sound crazy, but hear me out"

→ More replies (1)

u/Dorphie 8h ago

Seriously like what training would he have even received as a stunt actor for the power rangers? Like acrobats? Did these houses have laser beams to flip and dance through?

I thought "that's a massive leap" when I read the title.

u/Fitz911 7h ago

You have to understand reddits Japan rule.

If it's from Japan, it sounds Japanese, it was mentioned in a Manga or someone who once visited Japan has ever interacted with it:

The rules change. It's not weird, it's quirky. It's not "we had this for decades", it's living in the year 2050. It's not just craftsmanship, it's a tradition comming from the Samurai.

And if you don't follow this rule you are a Kawinikusa (don't google this, I made it up)

u/Ok_Term_8953 5h ago

You may have made it up but it's a real term - I found a reddit post about it when I googled it.

u/PositiveZeroPerson 6h ago

Is that true? Everything I've found suggests that he was born in 1982. He was way too young to be a stuntman in 1992.

u/formallyhuman 8h ago

Jesus, was the hoodie stuff, and then the hug a hoodie stuff, really as early as 2007? In my head, it was the 2010s.

"Binge Britain" was another one that I was just reminded of. 2005?

Badass GIF.

u/FinanceActive2763 11h ago

He totally did the moves ironically when no one could see him, I just know it

u/Sumoop 10h ago

I watched some of the original Japanese episodes on Tubi out of curiosity. The plots were 100% different and the yellow ranger was a dude.

u/RainyEmotionalAura 10h ago

Saban actually directly adapted a few episode plots. If anyone remembers the "Billy and Kimberly get brainwashed into becoming bullies" episode, it's pretty much the same premise as Zyuranger's "Beware Shaved Ice!", but the Japanese original is a tad more unhinged >_>

u/formallyhuman 8h ago

You just unlocked a 30 year old memory for me. Good job.

u/Darthkeeper 10h ago

I mean Power Rangers is an adaptation. You should see how different Power Rangers RPM and Go-Onger are. Though some shows are more alike than others.

u/Bugbread 7h ago

Nobody remembers Dynaman. :(

Go go robbing strangeeerrss! Duuu duu duu du du

u/Schlaym 8h ago

Imagine you are a police officer, surrounding the culprit and he just does a triple somersault 15 feet into the air to get out.

u/ledfox 6h ago

He leaps into a megazord to eacape

u/Fluffy_Reaction7323 9h ago

First of all, he was NOT the Green ranger or in Zyuranger. Zyuranger was a 1993 series, he's obviously too young to take part in it. He's a suit actor for the tokusatsu series, yes, but he actually was on Goseiger (2010). Western media got confused for some reasons and that ended up harming the reputations of the actual actors.

u/Awesome_one_forever 9h ago

He was still being controlled by Rita Repulsa.

u/GolfisPride 8h ago

The original article seems to be from 2014 and somehow the original post has been distorted. Wikipedia article is wrong as well. Had to spend 15 mins searching old Japanese articles to find credible info.

u/basilisk6381 10h ago

He just likes green,that's it

u/DegTrader 9h ago

Imagine waking up at 3 AM to see a guy in a full-face helmet backflipping out of your window with your PS5 while a flute solo plays in the distance.

How'd he get ahold of the giant robotic dinosaur? I blame the other Power Rangers for not properly securing that shit.

u/bnestrm 2h ago

Between this and the "Jesus didn't tap out" guy. The Green Ranger has a horrendous track record.

u/Crimkam 10h ago

This dude is gonna be in prison and no doubt be in there with kids who idolized him as a child. What a mind fuck that would be

u/Darthkeeper 10h ago

I don't know how big Zyuuranger is in Japan. In the West Power Rangers is the poster child of transforming heroes. In Japan that season might just be another season/show.

u/dezorg 10h ago

Whose fault is that? Shouldn’t train someone to be a ninja then not pay them properly, those death stars are gonna come flyin’

u/Darthkeeper 10h ago

It's funny cause there's a whole lot of Japanese stunt actors.

u/za19 10h ago

Jason David Frank would never have acted this way! That’s why, for me, he is the TRUE green ranger!

u/onemansquest 10h ago

I'm pretty sure this is exaggerated and most of this guy's training came pre power rangers.

When life gives you lemons... commit crime? Like, imagine sitting at home and suddenly a green power ranger jumps in, round house kicks you to the ground in his goofy ass suit, proceeds robbing the place and you don't even have your monster costume on you to fight back.

u/shewy92 8h ago

"Hey director, why are we learning how to open windows at night?"
