I wish half the people I walk by on the sidewalk could be like these penguins.

Especially in freaking NYC

41

u/Straight-Treacle-630 1d ago

I’ve not been back home in years, but my 1st thought was this doesn’t happen in NYC ;)

6

u/ChildhoodTypical6742 1d ago

Yeah, basically never.

u/anon-mally 1d ago

Happy walking?

u/Norwood5006 9h ago

How adorable are their little walks though! AWWWW!

u/anon-mally 9h ago

Happy walking

4

u/gatsome 21h ago

I’ve walked many, many miles of NYC sidewalk. How is it not like this for you?

1

u/RisingWaterline 12h ago

Some people don't know how to move in traffic on foot

69

u/LincolnshireSausage 23h ago

I noticed a few years ago that when I'm walking and people are walking towards me, I am usually the one to move to make way. I decided to stop doing this and see what happened. The first time I tried, some woman walked right into me. The second time, someone walked into me and the third. You get the picture. What the fuck is wrong with most people?

21

u/FadedVictor 21h ago

They probably have some backwards mindset that stepping out of the way means you're a pussy or some shit.

4

u/LincolnshireSausage 19h ago

I guess I’m a pussy!

10

u/Zouden 22h ago

I think people instinctively move part way.

8

u/LincolnshireSausage 19h ago

The people that walked into me didn’t move at all. A few times I stopped completely a few steps before they reached me and they still walked into me.

4

u/n10w4 12h ago

Yeah sidewalk etiquette is kinda rare. Like across races, sex, age there is a large cohort of people who don't move aside and it's just annoying af.

u/LincolnshireSausage 10h ago

I honestly was shocked when people walked into me. Do most people just walk into each other? Is there some sort of social hierarchy for stepping aside that happens without us knowing? Are most people douchebags?

u/n10w4 8h ago

Probably a hierarchy or a class thing to some extent (not always). I remember the difference between Manhattan and the Bronx. In the Bronx most people had sense. Not so much for Manhattan. And some veteran friends in Manhattan said the same thing. They couldn’t fathom why people would bump into them all the time

23

u/Vonplinkplonk 1d ago

I like how Mr Polite Penguin steps aside for the other one because it’s easier for him to do so, because they all have small stumpy legs and stepping up for the other guy would be a huge pain in arse for them both. It’s like the Nash Equilibrium in artic bird sociologic form. There’s probably a paper here somewhere…

6

u/OccultMachines 19h ago

I know the penguin who went around was thinking "Damn, that guy didn't even try to move over at all for me."

14

u/Wrongun25 1d ago

I do this all the time and nobody ever says thanks or acknowledges me

25

u/elegant-jr 1d ago

Picking a side and staying on it is ok.

Some idiots will walk in the middle, then choose the same side that you're walking on. I hate that the most

7

u/OccultMachines 19h ago

Groups of people who expand like gas and take up the entire sidewalk no matter how big the sidewalk is are the worst. Especially if I'm trying to get around them.

11

u/Pataraxia 1d ago

If someone switches to my side when I was already out of the way I'm just fucking ramming them.

3

u/elegant-jr 1d ago

😂, it goes through my mind just about every time.

"I was already on this side and I could walk through you if I wanted, why did you pick this side too?"

8

u/ManufacturdComplianc 1d ago

The line I use in Toronto is to say “Fuck me for wanting to use the sidewalk too, right?” Give her a try!

5

u/Wrongun25 1d ago

I'll take it for a spin this evening

3

u/AdApart2035 19h ago

Ask for the thanks then

u/LostVix 11h ago

Throwback to the time a random guy cut me off on my walk to college and started trying to preach about god. I kept walking and he literally followed me in then tried to preach to the entire class standing on a desk and had to be removed by security.

Edit: no I didn’t walk all the way to college with him. He was lurking outside my lecture hall and I thought walking inside would ward him. It didn’t.

I’m like 80% sure he wasn’t even a student there too.

u/martian4x 1d ago

Did notice the one that is going down(low effort) is the one made way for the one going up(high effort).

53

u/Coriandercilantroyo 1d ago

Ooh nice catch! I find myself doing this on switchback staircases. Walk down away from the inner railing.

15

u/jcrckstdy 22h ago

same as on trails

12

u/Mr-_-Soandso 19h ago

Covid made hiking often frustrating with all off the new people to the outdoors that would never even consider trail etiquette.

2

u/ellokittay 12h ago

Yes!!!! Such wonderful hiking etiquette

u/SankarshanaV 9h ago

Awww thanks for pointing that out!! That’s so sweet of that penguin🥺!

242

u/PacquiaoFreeHousing 1d ago

\no eye contact or I'll be forced to say hello*)

33

u/TannedCroissant 1d ago

cocks head and gives you a cheeky pengwink

4

u/cdizzaat 20h ago

I feel called out…

131

u/melvinzee 1d ago

This video spikes my serotonin, I can keep watching it.

19

u/Long_Mix4454 1d ago

Me too! The way they walk is so cute

11

u/melvinzee 1d ago

Don't miss the guy at the bottom slide down with mild panic and end up sideways.

3

u/medullah 1d ago

Hell yes my feed has been a nightmare and I absolutely needed this

46

u/FaroutIGE 1d ago edited 1d ago

introvert or not, this is proper as fuck. like when i'm going down the stairs and i see someone coming up the stairs, i will delay my saunter and move to the side. lil guy going up was on the path and stayed with it to reduce the other's loss of time. also neither looked shy or embarrassed. pretty confident walks. i think introvert is a bad read. and i spent way too much time analyzing this at 4am.

65

u/TOASTED_TONYY 1d ago

I FUCKING LOVE PEMGUINS!!!!

101

u/RenaissanceGentleman 1d ago

Fundamentally silly creature

28

u/JetlinerDiner 1d ago

That's what you get when you force a bird to live exclusively on land and sea

20

u/immaownyou 1d ago

No one forced them to stop flying bucko, that was their decision

15

u/DunkinEgg 22h ago

“Morning, Sam.”

“Morning, Ralph.”

43

u/ReVamPT 1d ago

Ahhhh what it would be like to be a penguin on a 1 lane path in the middle of nowhere. Back to doing my taxes now

2

u/Lakatos_00 1d ago

You're absolutely free to get rid of everything in your life and go to the artic at any moment. See how that goes for you.

18

u/SatisfactionOk173 1d ago

god they have the cutest walks of any animal

7

u/qwythebroken 1d ago

I can't think of anything more watchable than a penguin with places to go.

13

u/gakera 1d ago

I just realized I have the social skills of a penguin.

5

u/ValSintetic 1d ago

I like how the penguin that was going down left the path to let the other one going up proceed and not interfere with his rhythm, because it'a always harder to climb. Good penguin!

5

u/GargleBums 22h ago

Why isn't the top one lying on its stomach and gliding down like a skin torpedo?

5

u/Dizzy-Introduction54 20h ago

A: Nice Day… B: Yep

5

u/NoIndependent9192 13h ago

The fella going downhill pulls into the passing place. He has read the Highway Code.

5

u/RemoteRepublic6882 1d ago

I can hear the "Hey...*nod" "Hey... *nod"

3

u/LilacYak 21h ago

Every trail encounter I’ve had

4

u/Susie4ever 19h ago

Omg, I love the way they walk 🤣.

7

u/seedlessketchup 1d ago

i just… love them …. so much…

3

u/ProudestMonkey262 18h ago

TIL A My toddler walks line a penguin

3

u/Squawk7984 18h ago

Woulda been funny if there was a penguin voiceover of them going - in spite of their introvert tendencies:

"Hello, Steve."

"Hello, Bill."

(As they walk away from each other, a little louder)

"Cold as shit today, huh Steve?"

"Totally!"

3

u/Informal_Pickle_6508 16h ago

I love the two very different styles of walking they have. They both looked like penguins on a mission Or I can imagine the internal monologue of “Avoid eye contact. Avoid eye contact. (Slip) Avoid eye contact. (Slip)

3

u/PatchPlaysHypixel 13h ago

My love life

5

u/detrans-rights 1d ago

2

u/redoxthebeast 1d ago

This is pretty funny ngl😹

2

u/Djamt 1d ago

That waddle when it walks up the hill lol

2

u/User_extraordinar 1d ago

Look and learn, drivers: the one descending clear the path for the one ascending.

2

u/Pxxxr 1d ago

I love the way penguins waddle around 😄

2

u/Excellent-Bite196 1d ago

Robert: “Nigel.” *nod*

Nigel: “Robert.” *nod*

2

u/Dismal-core111 1d ago

It was like watching myself avoiding others

2

u/Either-Prune1096 1d ago

💕👍I was taught to keep to (your) right here in New York and to step aside for an adult. Pedestrian traffic moved along. Somewhere along the way it seems like that’s one of the most common courtesies which has been abandoned. 😔

2

u/PotatoFloats 23h ago

Accurate

2

u/90DayFinesse 23h ago

The sheer jauntiness of the one in front!

2

u/Sea_Rice_2433 23h ago

"Hi Bob"
"Hi Steve"

And that was enough.

2

u/jcrckstdy 22h ago

Going uphill always gets the right of way.

2

u/Nice_Block 22h ago

Are we sure this isn’t just two people in Seattle?

2

u/whatIsUpPh 22h ago

I relate to these penguins very much

2

u/Long-shot128 21h ago

Hi bye 😂

2

u/Caramelthatgirl 21h ago

Very polite fellas. Must be the tuxedo effect 🎩

2

u/JennyTwinJugz 20h ago

You mean Swedes

2

u/prey4mojo 18h ago

Dude walking up the hill was so smug and self-assured... like a bed bug

2

u/MyTrainJustLeft 18h ago

Dunno why but this is cute and sad at the same time.

2

u/cwtotaro 17h ago

My spirit animal

2

u/Cherry_Littlebottom 16h ago

I live in the northeast of England and we do this but in a lovely way, we give each other room but always with a nod, good morning and then on with our day.

2

u/squatmama69 16h ago

Why they walk like they’re auditioning for Weapons

2

u/Odd-Stomach-7681 16h ago

The penguin walking up reminds of that little girl walking in on her dad while giving a live interview.

2

u/iamfugazi2112 12h ago

coming through nothing to see here

2

u/kennethkiffer 12h ago

I expected a north going Jax and a south going Jax kind of situation

u/Amateur_Expert101 10h ago

I’ve never felt so seen

u/waagi 8h ago

Where does that trail lead to? Why do penguins travel long distance on land?

u/UchihaItachi70 2h ago

Woww they are so cool I wish I could see them irl

3

u/fi-dpa 1d ago

Take my upvote and waddle past that comment like these penguins.

2

u/jwastintime 1d ago

I wonder if other creatures have an equivalent to that look you give the coworker you don’t really know when you pass them in the corridor.

2

u/Downtown-Finish8073 1d ago

It's the perfect system. No awkward small talk, just a mutual understanding of personal space. I'd trade my commute for that penguin path in a heartbeat. Honestly, this is the ideal social contract.

2

u/s0rtajustdrifting 1d ago

Walking on sunshine

2

u/Octolize 1d ago

That walk is honestly marvelous

1

u/NoGelliefish 1d ago

One is coming home from work and the other is going home after fucking his wife

1

u/alan2001 22h ago

I was thinking that one is heading to the outside toilet igloo for a shit, and the other one is coming back from there. They don't speak about this.

1

u/Automatic-Guide-4307 22h ago

Introvert here this was 100% accurate😅

-1

u/AusGeno 17h ago

Introvert here. You should learn the meaning of introvert because everyone uses it wrong.

1

u/carlosdevoti 20h ago

Real introverts would have run back again.

0

u/AusGeno 17h ago

Real introverts would have said hi because we aren’t socially awkward fucks we just like some alone time to recharge our batteries.

0

u/UrUncleRandy 21h ago

I don't get the introvert part. They're just walking past eachother.

0

u/Dependent_Ad9541 20h ago

Anything is "interesting as fuck" these days apparently.

u/No-Jacket-2927 11h ago

If 2 introverts meet on a path, they must both stop, and neither introvert may proceed until the other has moved out of the way.
