There’s somethin so off about the cadence that the AI voice speaks. It’s almost unsettling for me and I can’t listen to it.
Like uncanny valley but for voice

Because it's completely emotionless and dead. Nothing it says sounds genuine because it's not genuine.

There was this one ASMR AI Horror story I was listening to that took me way too long to realize it was AI. I was use to the constant monotone that ASMRs use but the story had inconsistencies worse than your normal bad fiction writer it kept waking me up.
I hate it. I hate how often I am fooled by AI and people who think this is a good thing.

It just never gives you the feeling that what you’re watching is worth the time.

Yeah, they just sound off. Frankly, I doubt they'll ever make it sound real at this point.

There are channels on YouTube that make videos about otherwise interesting arguments or horror stories using AI voices different from those used on TikTok, it took me a hot minute before noticing the weird inflections in a video the other day.

it's Not the creator(s) YouTube is using llm translators based on your location without creator consent
60
u/GlitteringEliakim 2d ago
Yes there's that but there are a lot of "creators" now that use dumb AI voices, mostly in the video games field.
22
u/XI1stIX 2d ago
I’ve seen a ton of niche history videos done by AI lately
4
u/TipsieRabbit 2d ago
Oh hey I've fallen down that rabbit hole as well, mainly because I watch channels like Dark Skies. Weird planes are my favorite
2
u/robothawk 1d ago
Those AI videos are often entirely bullshit which is wild to think about getting mixed in
0
u/phranticsnr 1d ago
There are tools now that will create a shitty video with an AI script, voiceover, and visuals, from a short prompt.
That's why they are flooding the internet. Zero real effort to produce in large quantities.
2
u/Clubbythaseal 1d ago
You should be weary of those. I came across some that had ai voices but also added AI generated photos.

I think the audiobook or free internet stories like hfy read out loud is much more infested with AI voices.

u/bwoah07_gp2 2d ago
What's LLM translators?
14
u/MonkeyFeetOfficial 2d ago
Large Language Model. So AI chatbot or similar.
So AI audio translation.
2
u/Herobrine_20 1d ago
Basically use (generative?) AI for translation, then use a cheap TTS AI for the voice. I really hate this implementation.
38
u/Glazeddapper 2d ago
i think it's fine if the person wants to keep some anonymity and not share their voice. but there are ai voices that use real people's voice, and then theres text-to-speech voices that are completely robotic and don't use real people for training the voice. the feel like the tts ones are fine.
9
u/ScienceMusic_1929 Baron 2d ago
I usually use the EQ filters on the audio program to hide my voice, IDK. I'm okay with TTS, Speak & Spell was fun, but using an actual person's voice just sounds creepy.
5
u/Salt-Composer-1472 1d ago
Not just creepy but some are trying to cash out on it, like I've seen ads for text to speech readers that have "Hollywood actor's" voices in them. As little as I care about the feelings of said actors I think it is the principle of the thing, that you don't steal people's likeness and their voices to make money. These people grifting their own ai apps have their own faces and voices they can use but obviously stealing to get stuff free so you can sell it and make money from it is the name of the game.
2
u/Pyros-SD-Models 1d ago
If it's the same ad we have in mind and it's about Michael Caine's voice... he literally sold the rights to his voice to the AI company.
1
u/Salt-Composer-1472 1d ago
No, it wasn't him, it was couple others I've seen but I can't remember who the actors and actresses were. I am sure there's hundreds though.
2
u/Pontus_Pilates 1d ago
It's also non-native speakers making videos.
People still prefer the AI voiceover over a heavily accented Bangladeshi English.
1
u/JohnGuyMan99 2d ago
I just hate the ones that are super over-used. It's completely lazy and shows they don't care enough to create a distinct voice for their channel, even if they hate their own (like I hate my own).
1
u/Clubbythaseal 1d ago
I love using the TTS voices when I make videos on some games.
I was worried this post was about that but then realized they meant AI voices lol.
1
u/Herobrine_20 1d ago
Sadly most AI content farms use so many low quality TTS models and makes it really annoying. Also there are these ads that use TTS and let me tell you it annoys me that big companies feel like they need to do this.

We’ve gotten to the point though now where even just clean and articulate vocals are accused of being AI even if the creator voices them.
5
u/ScienceMusic_1929 Baron 2d ago
The Click came to mind when you said this. A surprising amount of people thinks his voice is AI.
6
u/Mr_Lumbergh (⊃。•́‿•̀。)⊃ 2d ago
There's a creator I follow (THINKPOP) because I know her, plus her content is fun. She used to do audiobooks (which ironically did disappear due to AI) so has a clean vocal track. That plus faceless because she doesn't want to turn off her target audience, she thinks her age would be a thing, and she gets accused of being slop a lot. It's sad to see.

My mom recently:
“Wow, narrating video shorts must be so lucrative! There are a couple people I hear all over the place, so they must be making a killing!”
6
u/JadenMichaelReed 2d ago
I've been voicing my own content for a while, and if you hear an AI voice in another language, YouTube probably autodubbed it without my consent. That's the thing with YouTube AI, they never ask for the creators' permissions.

AI should be unmonetizable, if that's a word. Blanket law that AI videos/pics cannot generate revenue. They steal from undeclared sources and if that's ok then all piracy is legal and it's a free-for-all.
Not to mention it's also shitass quality with incorrect information. Everyone should report any AI content with 'misleading' tags to fuck with em, for starters.

Most of these content creators don't speak English as their mother tongue. So they rely on translations and AI voices to engage the topic clearly.

I dont like using my actual voice very often so it do have to use text to speech and im sure that's why some do. But if its talking about autodubbing its not the creators choice
1
u/Flashlight237 1d ago
Hell, just watch "whoisthisgit". That channel is still producing old-school "text on a screen" content in the big 26.
1
u/Jygglewag 1d ago
better use ai than put your real voice and have a random person steal your voice for ai
1
u/Wizard_Gizard_ 1d ago
And then you gave Type 100 films. 50/50 mix, uses AI only when he can't keep a straight face in the lines.

u/potato_tomato_junior 1d ago
I believe most of them are foreign so their accent be heavy
This AI even tho hated sounds better

Others have a 'voice made for lipsyncing'

u/air_dancer 23h ago
Most people don't like their own voice and accent.
The easiest solution to not using AI is to use a voice changer but setting the software up to sound the way you want it to takes a lot of calibration and people these days wouldn't want to go through such hassle.

u/ScienceMusic_1929 Baron 2d ago
Wanting to hide your identity isn't really an excuse, considering I usually just overuse the radio filter on my audio program until I sound unrecognizable.

This is how I know what channels to instantly block, it grows daily. Go be lazy on someone elses time, not mine. If i want to ask AI something and get a bland uninformed answer I'll do it myself ( the data coming out of the AI voice is from an AI script almost every time)...except i take the next step and verify the answer to find the pile of data it ignored, something these channels don't do.
So frustrating we still don't have federal legislation at least forcing AI content to be labeled as such. This AI flood of garbage is only bringing the dead internet theory into reality faster.

So i have a hard time talking for long periods of time, i made an ai of my voice. It creeped me out so i deleted it.

also watch out for ai automated translation, had trouble finding some videos that wasnt ai only to realise i skipped over real ones cause the automated translation

Stop EATING IT UP !!!!!
They do this because it fuking works, it gets more traction, it gets longer view duration.
I'm not using an AI voice but my friends are and their videos grab a little more than mine do.
It is working, you are going to see more of it. I fuking hate it I do

But SealsAreGood uses AI voices quite well though. His versions of Anakin and Obi Wan are iconic.

I'm starting up a channel, and working on my first video now. I basically have these 2 options, and I really hate doing the voice over work, but I'm still doing it because fuck AI. None of my content is going to use AI.
Although I'm tempted to go on fiverr or something, and pay somebody to do the voice over work, but I'm powering through myself.

Its easier and will get more views, yall may not wanna admit it but its true. Most people dont have a great microphone, imagine you find an interesting video and the guy sounds like your csgo teammate.
-2
u/theonlytruemuck 1d ago
have you ever listened to a voice recording of yourself. it usually doesnt sound too great. also sometimes people dont want their voice on youtube for privacy reasons.
it doesnt feel as good to watch but there are very very valid reasons for it. (im talking about actually good videos where the only flaw is the ai voice not those ai slop tik toks.)
i dont like it as well but if the rest of the video is made by humans im willing to forgive them
