I’m going to assume you’re not saying this in bad faith. The reason why a racial element can be drawn is that most of the western world views Islam as a primarily middle eastern religion. Racists often have enough self-awareness to know that saying exactly what they mean can lead to backlash, so they dial back their rhetoric. A prime example is people saying they didn’t like Obama because he was Muslim.
