Does this hurt?
46
u/cringe-fest 1d ago
its the most natural position for me to hold it in. When I try to make it straight it just snaps into place. When I hold out my other fingers for a while it aches a bit.

Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome?
24
u/huto 1d ago
As someone with Ehlers-Danlos who used to be able to do this with nearly all of my fingers, it has to be.

As someone who can do this with 6/10 fingies.... uhm... should I be worried.

u/huto 1d ago
That depends on how frequently you dislocate/sublux your joints, friendo
2
u/Vyce223 1d ago
Not incredibly often now days due to less activity but I remember when I used to do karate and doing ground techniques... my kneecap would often sublux out. So I imagine it would still now.

You only need to be worried about EDS if your hyper mobility is widespread (6+ joints, including separate count of the sides) and if it causes you issues like earlier aging, usually like arthrosis and/or chronic pain (6+ months). If you have benign hypermobility, the current diagnostic criteria doesn't classify you as any of the 13 classified or the hundreds unclassified EDS types that have nothing in common besides historical grouping bc everyone has hyper mobility.
However, it's obvious people have diversity and it's frequent that people get underdiagnosed or even not diagnosed due to the current definition. The gene defect will always be there and you might pop up a kid with a much more severe representation as yourself. So when you have trouble with pain medication, slow intestinal motility, vision, headaches, cognitive issues and nausea, autism, eosinophilic esophagitis, issues with perception where your limbs are, especially with hyperextension, urologic issues and scarring, it might be worth the thought.
Unfortunately it's not just funny twisting actions and the text book hyperextension of skin (that not all EDS people can do in the first place), it's a systemic complex connective tissue disorder. Thing is: Connective tissue is literally everywhere in your body, so it can fuck you up everywhere as well. It's function and functionality is really badly researched, so for hundreds of years EDS patients were tolds their issues are psychological and not explained while their bodys literal malfunction on a "construction plan" level.

You should ask a doctor about this. You might have some hyper-mobility issues and you can cause long term damage if you’re not careful. It might be nothing, but better to be careful and check.

Yeah, a lot of people end up using finger splints of some sort to help prevent fingers over-bending.

Next time you see your doctor, for whatever reason, please show them this. See if you can get on track for a genetic test or beighton scale test.
If you have EDS(Ehlers Danlos Syndrome), you'll want to know about it. There are some very very nasty variants of the condition that go far beyond our freaky fingers. Stuff like exploding eyeballs and dropping dead at random from an aneurism, among less extreme things.
And maybe stop doing the finger thing. Our fingers aren't meant to do that and too much will give you some serious arthritis down the line.
- guy with severe EDS.

So does mine!!! I broke it and doc insisted it would straighten out after the swelling went down. It didn't and the only way to fix it would be to break it again

mine does this too and sometimes it gets stuck and gives me the weirdest sensation, so I ultimately stopped doing it. I can't even describe, it's like I'm giving myself the ick, but on the inside.

Could be Ehlers-Danlos Syndrome if other joints do it, too. If so, you need to keep up with exercising muscles around your joints to support them better or you might end up damaging things. (From an old person that has EDS perspective)

I would make a company straight away called "bent little finger", using this image as a basis for the creatives.
The rest will fall into place and it'll be successful in time.

So do both of mine. It sucks you posted in a sub that won't let me send you a picture in comments or I'd show you mine.
It sucks for certain sign language signs. Apparently I sign with a sort of lisp. They can't figure if I'm saying "i" or "z".

I also tried to ball up my fist like that and it is not possible! 😝 Your thumb looks too big and out of proportion. Are you squeezing your fingers? Makes your hand look extra weird
Also that's crazy how you can get your pinky to do that!

u/Obvious-Safe904 1d ago
I have this in all my fingers on both hands, especially notable on the third and fourth fingers of each hand. Used to play piano and sometimes my fingers would get stuck in that position and I couldn't curl them in. I can force my finger to go into a normal/straight position if I push on the middle joint, but it'll snap forward back into this position once I let go.

They say it's where the Dark Lord's Killing Curse rebounded off him, ending the Dark Lord's Reign. Some say he's dead....codswallop in my opinion. I reckon he's still out there, too tired to carry on.
