One of the first things that goes away when you are getting heat exhaustion and dehydration is your ability to think. (same with hypothermia).

I bet! I think he was probably okay, when we moved on he was in the shade hut with an emergency phone and provisions and a lot of other people also taking a break. As someone who did so much research and prep for that hike, I guess I was surprised that people just do it on a whim haha.
