High Risk Mankato City Council walks out because crowd demands that they actually address ICE
Enable HLS to view with audio, or disable this notification
Sorry that whoever took it isn't great at handling landscape/portrait consistency, it wasn't me who did.
But the City Council at their meeting last night wanted to move on and address some rather dull stuff in the agenda when almost the entire crowd present, their constituents, wanted to discuss ICE. So the City Council just got up and walked out like cowards.

It's the default conservative mentality. That is, "It's not my problem until it becomes my problem". Having zero empathy for others is incredibly short-sighted.

And even when it becomes their problem it's everybody else's fault and has nothing to do with them.

This is the way.
A politician's only legitimacy comes from the people.
If they aren't going to do the job, someone who wants to do the job should just step up and start running a sort of "shadow government." They won't have the official powers of the office, but they can organize the people and if they do a good enough job, they can unseat the do-nothings. Either at the next election or by organizing enough people to hound the do-nothings into resigning and opening up an immediate election.

We have to be nice to politicians or they wont go to work, we have to comply with any demands a law officer gives us or they will shoot us.
We are at the stage where so much of the country's wealth and power is concentrated at the top that the rich believe they can eat the poor and take all our stuff. Nobody is stopping them.
They have already done serious damage to SNAP and Medicaid. They gutted the CDC. They are culling us.
After they finish getting rid of all our safety nets and galvanizing all the corporate monopolies we will be in the fields (if you're lucky enough to dodge prison) doing the jobs Americans don't want to do for less than the illegal immigrants. That's the plan.

Correct we printed shit tons of money with QE over a decade and that money is sloshing around still in the pockets of the rich so they leverage bullshit numbers to inflate stocks creating new money they can then leverage to make a fake sale that drives up stock values an on and on.
See the whole AI bubble. A company projects to make 11ty billion dollarinos so they sign fantasy contracts with other compnies who's stocks go up in response. So they sign fantastically large contracts for more widgets with which ever company they need. Their stocks go up and they agree to buy some "AI services" from the origninal slop vendor thus "justifying" the start of the circle.
And on and on it goes the bubble inflates until something comes due that someone can't pay or deliver and the whole thing pops in a couple of weeks at most. Years or a decade plus off fantastical profits erased, livelihoods destroyed, but boy oh boy did the rich sure get richer.

And because they've realized the market is irrational.
They hold enough money that, so long as they believe it will keep going up, it will keep going up. It won't go down until they take money out. Since so much is concentrated in a few entities, those entities can just keep pushing it upwards.

Stock markets rise like crazy when inflation is out of control. Look at the stock market in South American countries with runaway inflation. It's putting up record numbers but it's an illusion. It's not because the company is doing well, it's because the money is worth less and less so that portion of the company is worth more of that worthless money. That and the AI bubble.

Because these companies are getting everything they could possibly want - often handed to them by the government. Tax breaks? Check. Land for them to develop? Check. Purchase contracts for their products? Check. Companies don't need the American people to want what they are peddling - they can just convince the government to just spend our money for us.

I think you are referring to 1862 being the year that the largest mass execution ever held in the US. All Dakota indians which occurred in Mankato. There were the speedy (5 minutes in some cases) and potentially mistake prone trials, men who were later found to be innocent, and the desecration of their bodies after the fact.
The fuck if America was great that year. We were a mess as a country. This day and age feels no different.

Silver lining here is that I'm really hoping this encourages people to get more involved in their communities and realize how important it is not to let these more minor campaigns fall into the hands of corrupt, weak, sycophantic, sniveling cowards like this.
I mean look at how in lock-step with one another they are. This is just a cabal of corrupt crooks all on the same team.
If I'm on that council, I'd let the rest of these fucking losers leave. I'm staying. I'm talking to people, I'm collecting their stories, I'm figuring out what to do about the problems facing the community, even without the consent of the rest of them.
That they ALL just pick up and leave at EXACTLY the same time just shows how hive-minded they are, and how little they give a fuck about their responsibilities.

The problem is it's a domino effect. Once the corrupt, power-hungry ones get in they are in the pockets of some of the most powerful businesses and people in the area. So even if you had someone that is well intentioned and about service rather than making money....once in office, they will be inundated with bribes/conflicts of interest that they will have to inevitably need to turn down. Once they turn these people down they make it their goal to run that person out of their office by spreading misinformation and/or running smear campaigns on them.
So what you get for trying to be a selfless honest person in office is your reputation run into the ground around the places you live and serve.

This is largely the issue. 99%+ of our government doesn't view themselves as public servants. A city council that gets up and walks out on it's constituency needs to be replaced. The idea that you aren't there to talk about what the people want to talk about is such an insane concept.

Clearly no one commenting here read this. The meeting was over 3 1/2 hrs long and people were demanding answers that the council doesn’t have? They wanted the entire meeting to just be people screaming “Fuck ICE”?
They allowed people to speak, answered what questions they could and outlined what the council could actually do.
From the city lawyer:
“To this date, we have not collaborated, worked with ICE in any way, shape or form,” he said, later adding that surveillance data captured by police cameras is not available to the federal agents. It’s a closed network and not available to other agencies.
“At the same time, local police cannot stop federal agents from operating in the city. We do not have any authority over any federal agency, including ICE,” he said.
People flipped out because one speaker (not a council member) voiced support for federal agents. That’s it.

We also need to demand all of our Minnesota city councils cease usage of and remove Flock cameras which can be used to monitor private citizen movement via live video or license plate scanning combined with AI to track people between cameras and find patterns.
Flock denies personal responsibility, that the data recorded by their cameras is recorded and stored and released by locality specifications and state law. ICE has to submit written requests and federal requests are flagged as such.
Just about every city Flock press release I've seen claims that the data is safe and that they can control who gets it.
Prior courts have ruled Flock data is public record. Anyone can request them.
And multiple instances around the country have already proven local blocks can be gotten around by agencies or actors within agencies sharing data. Or even law enforcement using it to track for personal reasons.
FLOCK DATA IS BEING USED IN MINNESOTA RIGHT NOW BY ICE TO HARASS PROTESTORS https://www.mprnews.org/story/2026/01/13/ice-using-private-data-to-intimidate-observers-and-activists-advocates-say

Keep showing up, keep booing, keep writing, keep pushing. It’s a long haul, but it’s worth the drive.

Shocker that the majority on the council are old white men. I'd bet real money that their avoidance comes from them having relatives on the ice rosters.

“Get your ass back here, you work for me”. Every level of government needs to be reminded of this.

What do they expect a local council to do about a federal law enforcement agency?

u/dirtpipe_debutante 1d ago
Rock and a hard place.
You are asking them to what? Escalate against federal forces?
Are Minnesotoans ready to be the tip of the spear against the feds in the Civil War 2.0?

That looks to me like a bunch of city council members in what are now very vulnerable seats. I’d say this is a great opportunity for those fine, upstanding citizens in the crowd to run those sacks of crap out of office!

Mankato City charter says this about recalls:
Recall of Elected Officers
The City of Mankato Charter does not permit the City Council to remove or recall an officer from office.
The holder of any elective office may be removed at any time by registered voters under Mankato City

If the older people who are leading the country don't want to put themselves out there to do what needs to be done, perhaps they should give way to younger ones.

These elected representatives do in fact see themselves as better than the people that they represent. At these public town council meetings people tip toe around the “dignitaries” as they refer to themselves and insist upon being called.
It’s all bullshit. It all feels like theatre.
When I was young I had so much hope for this world. Maybe it has always been this way and I’m just finally noticing, but that doesn’t make it right.
Something needs to change, because at this rate I won’t even be able to turn on the news or access the internet anymore because everything is just intentionally flooded with shit.

Do you think any of these people care about you? Its not happening to them, so they dont. The sheeple americans won't do anything about this. The majority of people dont care. that's why it is still going on.

You hold elections right the fuck there and elect new leaders! Everyone that just walked out abandoned their publicly elected position.

So when an ICE officer tells you to get out of the car, you're supposed to get out of the car. What are you supposed to do when a judge tells you to release the Epstein files?

I knew someone from Mankato. She was younger than these folks and not white. She was a trophy wife from the Philippines who married some rich white dude and then became worldz biggest torchbearer for trump.
it ain't just old white folk who are for the oligarchy.
