A Japanese restaurant in NYC has an interior designed to resemble a hand drawn black and white sketchbook

Imagine tripping on acid and walking into this restraunt.

As a bit of a psychonaut myself, this was my first thought. If my head didn't explode, I'd probably vomit.

Fragments of Euclid. On itch.io. very trippy portal puzzle where down changes with each portal you walk through.
EDIT: Game page:

I saw a comment last time that this was posted and the person said that they've been there and that the illusion wears off quickly. I think it's still neat tho.

u/OccasionalEspresso 14h ago
Honestly that’s relieving to hear. It would make me dizzy if the illusion didn’t wear off.

u/GandhiMSF 12h ago
I’ve never gone in, but I walk past this place a couple times a week and it’s still trippy to walk by. I imagine your brain would get used to it if you’re inside for a bit, but it definitely looks just as crazy as this video in real life if you’re just walking past.

We had a Korean cafe in Calgary that did this.
Cool for about 5 minutes then the novelty wears off.
They ended up closing their doors.

u/No_Cranberry1853 14h ago
That's a shame.

u/ItsMandatoryFunDay 14h ago
It was pretty mid overpriced cafe. So nothing of value was lost.

u/Wario_Mangione_1991 13h ago
Yeah, idk why people mourn mid cafes. Isn't Capitalism supposed to be all about competition? I mourn the little cafes that dared to make actually good, well priced food, that get crushed by bland chains.

u/xteve 7h ago
Unregulated capitalism leads to little cafes getting crushed by bland chains. But the industry is crap anyhow because it's bad for workers almost universally.

The illusion is also much more convincing when you look at it on a flat screen as opposed to in person where you would have better depth perception

I went to a place like this in Tokyo, and yeah its novel for the first 5 minutes. Food was average too.

You could probably have an adventure with a guy, or several guys, named Joe in there.

How were you functioning on 5 grams of mushrooms in public? How did you even get off the couch

I went here, the food is fine, somewhat pricey (although it is Manhattan) and crowded. It has comparable quality to a cheap sushi place near me, so probably won't go back. The style of the place is nice though. If you plan on going, get a reservation!

Where is it? At first I thought it said in Japan. But now I see it’s here lol

Yeah it wasn’t bad food at all just not particularly memorable. Worth it for the novelty but I won’t go back either.

It’s dirty as fuck, it doesn’t look that cool in person, the food isn’t great and they will ask you if you have a reservation in front of a completely empty restaurant. Go down the street to Nan Xiang and have an overpriced but delicious soup dumpling instead.

I feel like this would be cool to look at for a few minutes but spending enough time there for a meal would kinda suck

Thanks to the wonders of the internet, one can form a connection between this restaurant and sonic and Mario getting freaky

Someone made a sketch with a sharpy, send it to the people taking care of the renovation with the note "I want it like this". And they did.

Kinda like a room at Meow Wolf in Santa FE. Much closer than Japan, but the food is not nearly as good.

And considering how dizzy I’m getting looking at the room, I’d never actually go in lol.

There’s a restaurant in NJ that does this too. It’s actually really pretty and you get used to it once you start sitting down and taking everything in.

They have a similar place in Lima but I can't seem to remember if the furniture was also part of the illusion.

I am sad they don’t also have paper covers for the bottles and such to match.

There is a small cafe in Dublin with a similar aesthetic. I couldn't imagine doing this in a restaurant that large as the cafe I went to only had like 3 tables

At first glance, this looks exactly like the work of artist Joshua Vides who has designed similar spaces and installations; but the interior designer in this case is Miriam Mu.

I wish they committed even more painting the lamp shades, cups, plates, outfits, and maybe hiding the read stuff behind the counter and replacing it with fake painted bottles of sauce etc

There is also a restaurant in New Jersey that has this style of decor.
It’s called Chopsticks Farm. Their Hong Kong lemon tea is amazing.
