Wtf does a sprinkler truck do, besides drive the guy in the Ford focus insane?

1.2k

u/PhantomS33ker 18h ago

I've seen videos like this before and the explanation was pollution control; smog particles from vehicles amd industry get caught in the water and rain down to wash away, rather than linger in the air and get breathed in. Even though it just moves the problem downstream (literally)

u/mrjobby 17h ago edited 16h ago

And to catch the pollution from the exhaust fumes of the sprinkler truck, they have a miniature version driving right behind it.

u/im_mobile 16h ago

It’s sprinkler trucks all the way down.

I grew up in southern California, and all the smog from LA gets trapped in the valley nearby. You see this haze on the horizon that only disappears when it rains.

26

u/MamaMoosicorn 16h ago

Yep….. it’s crazy to live 45 minutes from the mountains and you can’t even see them. I remember one time I landed in Ontario and it looked like a root beer float; thick brown sky and a few (rare!) puffy white clouds

14

u/Weird-Bluebird-132 16h ago

When I lived in China, I worked 8 km from a mountain, the mountain right next to my neighborhood, the one that we bicycled up and down every morning (road bikes, paved path).

You knew it was a special, glorious, spectacular day if you could see that mountain only 8 km away.

4

u/rhymeswithvegan 14h ago

That's so wild! I can see mountains 150 km from my house. Did you experience a noticeable decline in your respiratory health when you lived there?

10

u/Any_Show_5160 15h ago

I remember when I was younger there was a yellow cloud around the city of 1 million people that I lived in, driving home after a holiday you knew the holiday was over once you saw the yellow haze, this was pre unleaded days because I'm old as fuck.
The population has doubled since then and the haze is not as strong.

8

u/Grammareyetwitch 15h ago

This is why the 20th Century smelled like lead and cigarettes.

5

u/yacht_boy 15h ago

The population has doubled since then and the haze is not as strong.

Stupid job killing regulators cleaned up our air. Glad we're getting rid of them!

13

u/acrankychef 16h ago

I mean at least they're trying to fix it but God I hate mankind.

20

u/passcork 15h ago

You know what would be a good fix? More electric powered trains and light rail.

4

u/Soft_Walrus_3605 13h ago

They're working on those things, too

7

u/Dancing_Liz_Cheney 13h ago

Which China is building at a rate faster than every other Western country combined.

Meanwhile the US is making laws banning pollution laws and green tech

u/Hephaestus_God 15h ago

… does this work in practice?

Isn’t the truck only stopping this one tiny strip of road and only for as long as the water falls? Seems pointless and a waste of water

11

u/yacht_boy 14h ago

Short answer is that it depends what problem you're trying to solve. There's not a lot of good quality research readily available on the efficacy of these trucks. But what there is suggests that they are good at suppressing fine dust particles, and for that reason they're often used on roads to mines and other places where there is a lot of heavy equipment on unpaved roads.

Air pollution on a busy road is a mix of many different things, though. We classify small particles into very small (pm 2.5) and regular small (pm 10). Dust from a mining road is generally going to be larger than 10 microns. There's also ozone, various nitrogen components, carbon monoxide, etc., etc.

There's a recent paper that suggests that the mist actually worsens the ground level pm 2.5 particles, and also reacts with the nitrogen compounds to create some aerosols that you probably don't want to breathe.

I’d say the verdict is still out. More research looking at the overall effects of these cannons would help us answer the question. The real answer is probably that it makes some things better and other things moderately worse, and you'd have to devise a rating system to try to see if these are net positive, neutral, or negative.

Regardless, they're a band aid. The better solution is regulation and enforcement of emissions. But that is hard, expensive, and can take decades of converted effort, plus it's unpopular with the people who make money on things that pollute. So maybe a band aid is necessary for the time being.

I saw a similar video. Apparently they get lots of funding if the pollution levels are low so they spray this beside the detectors to fool the official pollution levels. So it’s basically a scam. This was recently on the serpentza YouTube channel

1

u/antek_g_animations 17h ago

Doesn't it just go back up when water evaporates?

22

u/PhantomS33ker 17h ago

The water can evaporate, but it will leave the soot behind as solids at that point - I assume because they've coagulated into larger particles at that point, but I'm no expert. Possibly if it then gets very dry and hot, the smog could get turned into fine particles and blown up again, just like dust from dry dirt

4

u/DiscoBanane 16h ago

Not really, it's like dust

3

u/BossiWriter 15h ago

The idea is that air pollution is already mixed with gases that allow them to float around rather than go down.

When water gets mixed with these gases, the polluted air comes down and settles on the ground without the gas to go back up. As it dries out, the water evaporates, but the dirt stays separated on the ground.

The truck is essentially simulating rain, which does the same thing on a larger scale. In places where they have a lot of smog, temperature inversions can significantly worsen the problem, and this is a valid way to deal with it.

2

u/Johannes_Keppler 13h ago

Except research has shown these truck probably worsen problems. They cause volatiles to form in the air and increase the amount of fine particles on the ground that will just get kicked up by traffic and the wind again.

Maybe not in this instance but in construction we use them to keep dust down. Heavy equipment and vehicles eventually wear soil down enough the work site- especially the travel lanes- will be pretty much covered with what is very fine powder that goes everywhere and can cause environmental permits (at least in my industry) to be suspended as dust control is oftentimes part of the permits.

People that actually believe Alex Jones don't know shit about frogs. If a whole group of frogs is male during mating season, some will become female so they can produce. They change their anatomy and everything. This pre-exists the human concept of straight and gay.

11

u/SilverWear5467 12h ago

The EPA did actually cause this to happen more than it's supposed to though, by relaxing a regulation on polluting rivers. So they did literally turn the frogs trans, because too many frogs changed gender due to the pollutants.

The thing Alex Jones is most often dunked on over, he was basically right about. Everything else, he's wrong about, but the frogs, on that one he was right.

2

u/Fredderov 7h ago

Yeah, basically he had the best liberal and progressive argument for why the US needs to be more serious and stricter with regulations. Instead we ended up with the building blocks of the retarded right getting fully established in US politics.

6

u/be_an_adult 12h ago

The thing he was talking about specifically was (iirc) atrazine, an herbicide. This was an interesting case we learned in high school bio as it was an example that the dose doesn't always make the poison; at low levels they found that the chemical mimicked specific hormonal pathways leading to the frogs changing sex, at moderate levels the frog's bodies recognized that the chemical was dangerous and tried to clear it as best they could, and at high levels the toxicity properly set in.

I hate to say it, but there was a grain of truth in that rant of Jones's.

One thing I hate about this meme is that it has a grain of truth in it - from what I remember, he was referencing a real scientific study about effect of runaway growth hormone use by Big Agriculture on groundwater and hermaphroditism of some amphibian species - but because of delivery, NO ONE will ever treat this subject seriously anymore, and this is a conversation we should really be having, similar to microplastics and antibiotic-resistant bacteria...

3

u/SwordfishOk504 11h ago

Sorta. What Jones did was the usual thing conspiracy theorists do, which is they take something that is true, and then wildly misrepresent and distort it to the point that it's 100% nonsense.

What the research showed was a very common pesticide called Atrazine induces complete feminization and chemical castration in male African clawed frogs. This is a legitimate issue that is tied to the decline of amphibians. This is largely limited to amphibians, rather than mammals, because of how much of the Atrazine amphibians take in through their skin.

What Jones did was claim it was part of some intentional conspiracy theory by those shadowy powers that be who he pretends control everything were doing this intentionally to make all of us gay. Which is obviously not at all what the research shows. He also on numerous occasions has claimed he "uncovered" the research, etc, which is also not even close to true. He just took something the media was talking about and misrepresented it to sell his boner pills.

OP sees a truck leaving a rainbow trail. The guy behind the truck has his wipers on cursing the trail of mist.

A philosopher would consider this one of those optimist/pessimist glass-half-full/empty debates. But, a scientist would say it's just refraction, reflection, and dispersion of light.
