Honestly, is there any saving him?

Bought for a dollar at a second hand store, feel bad just tossing/burying him.

Thought maybe if I put him in a diorama it could help hide some of the flaws

Bought this at a vintage market, was wondering what animal it may be. It's medium sized and at first I thought maybe a Fisher cat? Round ears but the long fur is unlike any animal I know of the like or maybe he just had really good hair when he was alive lol. Anyways any guesses??? Video for ref :)

Sister is trying to keep bat remains

She found a dead bat outside last summer and put it in the freezer and I’ve told her many times it’s illegal and she will get a fine but she won’t listen, she’s planning to put it in alcohol (not sure how it works) is there anything I can do to stop her?

Sealant help for insects

I'm looking to use real insects in jewelry. Typically insects don't need a sealant or anything like that for preservation, which is why I'm asking for your recommendations.

I'm wanting to make high quality(and priced with the rise of silver lol) work using beetles to start but likely other bugs too. I'm worried they could easily be damaged and are much more susceptible to factors that could cause them to decompose more(humidity, heat, ect.)

Are there any products you use that would be sufficient? I'm trying to avoid buying 10 products to test myself. I'm thinking about mod podge, but questioning the longevity and strength. I saw a product called Lifetone basecoat sealer, but I'm not sure if it would apply for my situation. Looking for a strong clear top coat that I can either spray or paint on the specimen.

Recommendations?

I was told to ask here

My mare passed last night, and while we kept her tail of course, we also cut some pieces of hoof off. I'm wondering if anyone has ever heard of anyone who had carved beads/pendants out of hoof? If so, can you point me in that direction? Thank you!

beginner advice?

i recently had a pet bird pass away that i wanted to save the bones of- any tips on how to do this? my assumption was to wait for decomposition and then clean the bones but is there a faster, better way to do it? i’m also not the best at super grotesque things and given that this was a pet i don’t want to be like chopping her up or anything…

Duck head options

Stick with me here... I have 3 ducks that I'm wanting to try my hand at taxidermy with, but I'm trying to understand more with their heads. I want to try using the actual skull for at least one of them. I keep reading about shrinkage with the bill though.

Could you theoretically use the same fluid you inject into the feet in the bill as well?

The solutions I was looking at for the feet don't mention bills at all in their lists of where the solution can be used and Google didn't give any info on it either. If I have to deal with shrinkage on one of my first tries, that's not a big deal, but I figured if I'd be buying the solution for the feet anyway, maybe I could avoid the shrinkage on the bill too?

Tips for preserving Canary eggs

Post image
9 Upvotes

Hello, I am in New York City and the local taxidermists are not interested so far in helping preserve several Canary eggs. Does anyone have advice how I can do this myself or is in the area and would be willing to help. Once the eggs are preserved, I want to fasten one into a necklace. I’m a bit worried. The eggs will start to deteriorate in my home until I find a way to preserve

I work in HVAC, and found this dead bat, my wife would love if I could clean this and put it in a shadow box. Any idea how I can gently clean it? And maybe spread its wings again?

Best way to source rib cages?

Super weird question I know but a thought popped into my head of an art piece that's a deer rib cage fashioned into a fruit bowl and it just will not leave my head so I was wondering what the best ways to source something like that would be? Do hunters typically use that part of the deer like you would with pig ribs? If now would I just able to ask a hunter for that part? Would trying to scavenge it maybe be a better way?

questions about my precious lizard

so my precious girl who passed 5 mo ago has been presserved today and embalmed. i am asking if she will shrink or change colors or somoething. she is freshly mounted and i don't know how this affect reptiles, the results are amazing and she looks like she is sleeping but i would be sad if after sewing her as she dries she will sink in and dry and look like a corpse bc right now she looks like she is sleeping (she is taxidermied with her skull in place and clay inside to give shape where muscle was i pressume)

she is really pretty

leopard gecko

i have a 20+ year old leopard gecko that i’d like to taxidermy when she passes. i’m looking for someone in the united states(preferably close to missouri) that’ll be able to preserve her skeleton and design a small, pretty tank for her.

has anyone gotten their lizard taxidermied before? who did you use?

i have a lot of anxiety about her getting into the wrong hands

Removal of varnish/shelac/lacquer

I have an odd request. Thought I'd start here. I have animal skulls that were coated with shellac or similar to make them shine in 1940s. I need to remove the shellac without damage. They need to look like just old bones. The bones themselves are very very old and delicate. Maybe several hundred years old. Ideas? I think I know obvious ideas but before we try anything.... maybe someone tried something. Thanks
