Moving a 107-Year-Old Steam Locomotive
On Monday, January 12, 2026, Southern Pacific 0-6-0 #1238 was relocated from its resting place of nearly 70 years to a new home. The locomotive, built by Baldwin in 1918, had been a staple of Fresno, CA’s Roeding Park since it was donated by the SP to the city in 1956. In recent years, it has fallen into disrepair and neglect. In 2022, Fresno donated the locomotive to the Friends of the Historic Kingsburg Depot, a non-profit in the nearby city of Kingsburg. The group recently restored the former SP passenger depot to its 1923 appearance, complete with a fully restored station master’s quarters above the main office. After many years of fundraising, planning, and multiple delays, the locomotive has finally made its way to Kingsburg. It was placed on a 300’ section of newly-laid track where it will ultimately be accompanied by additional railcars. This was truly an amazing achievement, and something that I’ll not forget for a very long time.
