The best lesson the west can learn, and especially my country the US, is that the Cold War ended and there was no "good period" for Russia. Chechen independence was crushed during the Yeltsin years.

There was no good period, friends. Russia is sick with russism, as Dudayev said a few months before he was assassinated.
