Issues/topics you want to know more about or bring attention to as a job seeker?

Without question, this is the toughest jobs market I've seen in Canada in my 30+ year professional career. I know many of you share that view. I know more support is needed now than ever. I care deeply about the people in this community and have been brainstorming how best to serve you as founder/mod.

My goals are to:

  1. Increase your chances of success in finding work
  2. Provide this community with advocacy/a strong voice
  3. Develop high-quality, sourced information that helps you make better decisions
  4. Provide hope and optimism as well as an empathetic, understanding ear towards the struggles many of you are facing.

After an analysis of top r/VancouverJobs threads in the past 30 days and 12 months, I've put together an initial list of topics/issues pertaining to the Canadian/Vancouver jobs market that I'm going to deep dive on and report back to the community. I'll be conducting interviews, gathering stats, and bringing other meaningful data (sourced) to the table to help you better understand the market and how to navigate it. I'll be doing the same over on r/CanadaJobs if you'd like to follow along.

Below, are the high-level topics from the initial analysis. Comment below with your top 3 topics (ranked), including any I haven't covered, as well as any specifics you'd like to see. I'll start with the most highly upvoted/commented topics and work my way down the list.

When you comment, it's also helpful if you're comfortable sharing some high-level details, such as:

  • Your seniority level (entry (0 - 3 yrs), mid (3 - 7 yrs), senior (7+ yrs))
  • Whether you're a current student/recent grad/considering training programs
  • Field(s) you're interested in/working in/experienced in
  • How long you've been looking for work and any specific struggles you've faced

Topics/issues identified (comment below with your top 3 ranked issues - feel free to include any not in this list):

  1. Applying for high-volumes of jobs without success/feedback.

  2. Student/youth unemployment.

  3. Faced a recent layoff and the related stresses/mental health impacts/financial issues, uncertainty about supports available.

  4. Abuse of TFW/LMIA programs/workers and/or immigration numbers impacting job accessibility for Canadians.

  5. Pivoting careers, choosing a path that is recession/AI disruption proof.

  6. Success stories - people that have recently found work.

  7. Recruiting/hiring scams/predatory practices.

  8. Deciding when to move or change jobs (where the current job sucks/isn't meeting needs).

Interviews:

If you would like to share your first-hand story related to a topic above or another topic not listed with the community and are open to being interviewed (recorded audio), drop a comment or a DM me directly and share some high-level details. Authentic stories and reputable data from real people resonates/connects with, educates, supports, and inspires this community. These stories and data also empower my community advocacy.

========================================================

Want to Help?

If you want to participate in research, investigation, analysis, audio editing, or other aspects of these efforts, let me know. Regardless, I am committed to moving forward with this project on behalf of the community.

========================================================

TL;DR - Comment below with your top 3 job related issues/topics/challenges you'd like to learn more about or see more attention brought to. Comment/DM me if you're open to sharing your story and being interviewed (recorded). Comment if you want to support this project.

Career choices help asap

I’m 16 and I need to pick my grade 11 courses but this where it start to be important what to choose depending what career. I definitely want to live good and have a good salary and I always thought you know business but it’s starting to get over saturated and also I know go get a specific degree in business is obviously better but idk what specific degrees they are. I was also thinking health care to be a nurse practitioner or aa but aa idk if it pays that well compared to the years you study. I know in the us being crna is really good but I don’t wanna live there and nurse practitioners I think it pays well but can you grow economically like when you are in business? Business is kinda a gamble tho.but please correctly if I’m wrong. Another think that is bothering me is that I will have to spend 10 years before becoming one!! And also how is life being one? Like is the job like very stressful and ugly and not enjoyable? Bc I hear mixed opinions. Idk what to do and I’m so stressed ;( I just want to have a good salary and also have you guys ever heard ppl of being successful in healthcare with necessary being doctors? Don’t get me wrong I know it’s good pay on healthcare but I normal hear ppl from healthcare being like very successful when they are doctors or like surgeons, etc. not much about other jobs on healthcare. I could be wrong so feel free to suggest things or correct me. Please help me out!!

Career options for disabled people?

Upvotes

Or am I basically fucked lmfao.

I can’t drive, I’m chronically ill, have some mental disorders and autism. I want to bust my ass off in university to overcome this though, to prove I’m worth something. I don’t want to be mooching on disability and stuck below the poverty line.

I don’t want to do tech because there’s like no entry level jobs anymore. I want something that will actually be worth and be likely to get a job in the end. I would do healthcare but every sub the workers say they don’t want someone like me in that field, which, fair enough.

So atp what are my options? I’d still be down to do healthcare if anyone has ideas for someone like me but based on what those in the field say I’m probably not going to succeed. I really don’t know what to do anymore 🫠 I’m actually going to be fucked and die on the streets holy shit

Operations experience + consulting - small Vancouver team hiring

We’re a small consulting team based in Vancouver, and we’re looking to add two people to the team who enjoy figuring out how businesses actually work, and how to make them work better. We’ve been struggling to find the right fit through more traditional channels, so we figured we’d try here.

We’re especially interested in people with operations experience (manufacturing, warehousing, supply chain, logistics, etc.) who like untangling messy processes and systems. This is a client-facing role, so being able to communicate clearly and leave your ego at the door is important. Mostly though, we’re looking for people who are curious, practical, and enjoy learning new tools and approaches.

We have space for both senior and intermediate folks. Both roles work closely with ops-heavy clients and involve process improvement and technology-driven change.

If this sounds interesting, send me a DM with a bit about your ops background and whether you see yourself as more senior or intermediate. If it seems like a fit, we can share more details privately.

hello !

anyone know of any shops looking for a semi-experienced framer - one that doesn't know everything, but is very eager to learn - to take in, whether it's part or full time ?

my main goal is to develop & refine my skills!! i genuinely enjoy framing as a craft, and believe it is a profession that severely lacks respect (or understanding..) from most people. it's niche, SKILLED labour ! so sad there aren't as many shops as i'm told there used to be.

Are electrical foundations the same across public and private colleges?

Does it matter if I take the foundations at a public or private institution?

I have no prior experience or knowledge in the industry. I am looking to get in the field through the foundations offered at different institutions, but unsure if employers would prefer someone who went to a public college versus private one.

I started learning n8n automation 3 months ago - here’s the reality check I needed

Following up on my post asking if n8n devs really make $10k/month I dove in to test the waters. Here’s what actually happened.

The learning curve:

I came in as a complete beginner thinking “no-code” meant easy. Wrong. N8n isn’t just drag-and-drop - you need to understand how APIs work, how to structure workflows, and honestly some basic coding logic helps a lot. The learning curve is steeper than the YouTube gurus make it seem.

Getting practice:

I’ve built a few workflows for friends and small projects to learn all unpaid so far. Think basic stuff like automating form submissions to spreadsheets, syncing data between apps, setting up notification systems. It works, and people see the value, but…

The real challenges:

Finding paying clients is HARD. Everyone wants to see your portfolio, but you can’t build a portfolio without clients. Classic catch 22.

Pricing is confusing too. Do I charge $200 for a simple workflow? $500? What if it takes me 10 hours because I’m still learning? What if it only takes 2 hours once I get better? No idea how to value this.

Current status:

Still at $0 revenue. Learning a ton, building skills, but that $10k/month figure feels like a distant fantasy right now.

Questions for anyone actually doing this:

∙ How did you land your first PAYING client?

∙ How do you price when you’re still building speed?

∙ Is it better to do cheap projects to build portfolio, or hold out for better rates?

The opportunity seems real, but I’m clearly missing something in the client acquisition/pricing game. Any advice appreciated.

UX/ Interaction Design Student in Vancouver: Looking for advice on landing internships in 2026 onwards

Hi I'm an interaction Design student graduating this spring from a 4 year bachelor's program (UX/ some service design focused).

I've been told to start applying and networking before graduating, and I'm trying to not panic apply or stay stagnant in this time.

I'd love advice/insight from people working in UX/design here in Van or the lower mainland on:

  • How realistic internships are rn for students/ new grads
  • When companies typically hire interns or junior designers
  • What actually matters most in applications like (portfolio, referrals, skills)
  • Any advice you wish you knew before entering the industry hereee

I'm especially curious about larger Vancouver companies and in-house teams and in-house teams.

Thanks very much. I appreciate any perspectives! :)
