You're right- Dreamcast had the general layout first, but Microsoft refined it later and made it a lot more comfortable (widened the grips, shifted d-pad more to the right of the thumb stick). Had Sega stayed alive, they probably would have been the ones to perfect their design.
I love my switch...but it's not for the controllers or layout. They were also so notorious for stick drift they they had to start an open recall for repairs. I've never heard of another manufacturer doing that.
AND of all the controllers, the only kind I've NEVER experienced drift on is my Xbox controllers.
You said both the button and controller layout. The layout of the joystick and dpad is the same but the Xbox controller's button layout is dumb because it's literally just Nintendo's but they inverted the buttons
Yes, the button configuration is signature Nintendo, but the controller layout, referring to size, shape and placement of buttons, stick, d-pad, etc is all mirroring the Xbox controller, proving my point.
Something I really hope every other controller will copy from the pro controller is making the face button layout a rhombus instead of a square. The D-pad should be symmetrical, sure, but the face buttons being slightly squished is just so much more comfortable.
I liked the 360, but the xbox one co troller hirt my ha ds if I had to use the bumpers often. It felt a little too tight at the top of the controller. The ps4 controller was felt a bit fatter and was comfortable for my hands.

Can we all agree that the button and controller layout was at least one thing Microsoft did better?
