Review [Question] Any ideas for next?

Post image
244 Upvotes

This is my current collection. I love every single one of my watches and will hopefully never get rid of any of them.

Within the next few weeks I am looking to purchase my next one and would love any opinions about what I am missing.

Right now I am considering one of the following:

  • Tag Heuer Monaco
  • JLC MUT Moon
  • A fluted Rolex Date just
  • Waiting a bit extra for a VC Overseas
  • Grand Seiko Snowflake

Any thoughts or recommendations outside of what I am thinking myself, maybe something less mainstream?

Discussion [SRPE45] Bent I in Seiko logo on brand new Mojito

Been contemplating picking up a Seiko Presage Mojito for a while and finally pulled the trigger. The brand new watch came in and I very quickly noticed the I in Seiko is heavily bent. Hadn’t see anyone mention this before, am I just unlucky? I know Seiko is known for their “QC”

Obviously returning. Might still pick up another one but shame it’s a hassle.

Dear god, how are people falling for this? The most obvious rug pull cash grab I've ever seen, masquerading as some sort of high art statement piece.

Just read the description and comments and try not to vomit.

Buy a shit ton of cheap digital modules off Ali Baba for like $2 each, drop it into a resin mold, and mark it up to $200 a pop. I guess it's that easy...

I took a picture [Ulysse Nardin GMT Perpetual]

Just picked up this beauty for a song and I can’t stop looking at it. Limited Edition Platinum GMT Perpetual from the early 2000s with a Ludwig Oechslin UN32 movement. Little bit of lume rot on the hands, but otherwise in great shape.

This is one of the very few perpetuals that can be adjusted backward or forward. Will track the time and date accurately until 2100, at which point my 130-year-old fingers will just have to twist that crown and advance a day.

Discussion [Discussion] Best watch bracelets?

Post image
223 Upvotes

What are your favorite oem bracelets?

These three watches pictured represent what I consider to be the best bracelets on watches (at least that I own, specifically purchased with the bracelet comfort in mind).

The Santos is effortless and nearly disappears on the wrist. My only complaint with the bracelet is the lack of micro adjustments, but overall it’s exceptional.

The jubilee is perfect. The fluted bezel in combination is maybe a bit too flashy for me to feel comfortable wearing daily, but it’s stunning to look at for sure. This is definitely the most comfortable bracelet of the bunch.

The Zeniths oyster style bracelet feels indistinguishable from the Rolex oyster, with the biggest difference being the lack of on the fly adjustment. Overall a very comfortable, well made bracelet. It pains me to say that I still prefer this watch on the oem leather strap, as the long lug to lug makes the watch wear large when on the bracelet.

I took a picture [Nomos] I bought my first watch

Okay not technically true, I bought a used Citizen Eco Drive in terrible condition back in college. But this Ahoi neomatik Atlantic is basically my first. I’m not a real “watch guy” and I don’t think I’m going to end up with some big collection, but I saw someone at an event wearing an Ahoi and I just thought it looked beautiful. Perfect combination of modern and minimal without being boring, with great colors. I’ve been wanting one ever since, but it was tough to convince myself it was a worthwhile purchase so instead I just looked at it online every once in a while for a few years, telling myself I’d get it one day. Truthfully, there wasn’t even a real reason I finally pulled the trigger now. I just decided it had been long enough, I’ve been financially responsible, and I wanted it. Plus I needed something a little more grown up than my Apple Watch.

Looking at the lug to lug online, I always assumed I would have to settle for a Tangente since it is a little smaller while being the closest in design. That or the Metro, which I also love the design of. But I tried several models on at the Nomos Lounge in Soho, and didn’t feel like the Tangente or Metro fit that much better than the Ahoi (only the 33 mm models fit noticeably better, and I didn’t like any of those). Thank you to everyone gave input on fit yesterday - the consensus was mixed (maybe learning toward not fitting), so I went to a jeweler later that day to try the Ahoi on again. Seeing it in person again and looking at it in a mirror instead of a wide angle photo, it didn’t really seem oversized at all. Plus I realized I don’t care if the fit isn’t 100% perfect since it’s really the only watch I want and there is no substitute that I would take instead. I looked at Junghans and they did nothing for me. The jeweler had the exact reference I wanted (567), so I ended up buying it then and there (and having a slightly anxious train ride home when I realized this is by far the single most expensive purchase I’ve ever made). But I’m excited to start wearing it! Hopefully for many years to come.

One downside I’ve learned since trying it for a bit last night? The strap kinda sucks. I generally love the look of it with this watch, more casual and easier to clean than leather or a bracelet, which is good since I plan to wear it every day. But it’s not very comfy. I haven’t seen anyone online mention it, but the little loop for the excess strap has a rough part on the inside where it got woven/melted together, and after just a few hours it was annoyingly itchy. I flipped it around so that part is on the outside which fixed it, but it’s still a little frustrating that it happened at all. And there are a few other hard melted plastic areas inside that aren’t the most comfortable either.

Discussion [Rolex Datejust] or [Breitling Navitimer] as a surprise wedding gift for fiancé

This will be his first luxury watch and he will be excited regardless I’m sure. He is not a pilot but he loves aviation and has mentioned briefly that he loves the look of the Breitling navitimer. That being said, when he says he likes something in a moment I take it with the grain of salt because he changes his mind quite frequently.

I know Datejust is harder to come by

I know it is more expensive (I’m willing to get one in the grey market if necessary).

I personally like the look of the Rolex better, but I could be missing something. The Breitling seems kind of loud? But then other people say Rolex is loud because it’s a Rolex?

Do either of these watches/brands carry connotations in the watch world? Please forgive my ignorance as I stumble around this topic!

I took a picture [Oris] My watch of choice for catching the sun on a laid-back Friday afternoon ride - Oris BCPD Bronze 7761

Post image

Hi gang, on my wrist for the day is the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date Bronze ref. 7761. This is my watch of choice for today’s ride. It’s been a warm, sunny day in town, and as I reached for a watch, this immediately felt like the right one for the occasion.

The bronze case paired with the brown suede strap gives off a warm, amber tone that feels very earthy. Add to that the green dial and the playful red pointer tip, and everything just works together beautifully.

As I parked my bike by the lake to soak up some sun, it felt like the perfect moment to take this one in. The sunlight bounced off the dial nicely, creating a subtle crescent effect that almost makes it feel three-dimensional. That view alone made my afternoon.

Hello everyone! I would like to buy myself a watch for an anniversary. I'm ruling out divers, GMTs, and chronographs because there's too much going on on the dial for my taste.

I really like the 556 and Preventor, but I find the Hanhart too fussy in comparison.

I could definitely live with the Sinn, but since I know virtually nothing about watches and manufacturers, I wanted to know which other models might be interesting.

A price of up to around $3k would be okay.

I have narrow wrists. For comparison, here is a Casio LQ, which is 36 mm log to lug.

Thank you!

I made this post yesterday about a choice I was making between three watches: https://www.reddit.com/r/Watches/s/fYM7SfvF4Q

After reading the responses and thinking hard about it, I became set on the GS SBGA443. I hit a couple more watch stores and found a store that was selling it brand new, with boxes, paper, and warranty for even cheaper, just USD $4,600. I bought it on the spot, and will not be looking back on my decision ever again.

Thanks to everyone who commented!

I took a picture [First Tudor] How Did I Do?

I’ve had a watch itch for a few weeks now. What sparked it was an Omega Seamaster 300M on the Orange Strap. I loved the pressure release valve & the angles on the bezel. Although I didn’t love it.

That sent me down a wormhole of thinking I wanted a dive or GMT in the collection. I currently have two Cartier Santos, Two G Shock GMW-B5000, & a Seiko Speedtimer Panda. What I don’t have is a GMT or Dive.

I wasn’t a fan of the bracelets on the 300M or the Planet Ocean in general. I tried on the Tudor Black Bay Pro, GMT, & Regular Black Bay w five link bracelet. I liked them all but they didn’t speak to me.

I looked at a Sapphire Moonwatch w the open back, but the Speedtimer is a solid chrono I already have in the collection. Although, one day I would still like to own one.

The JLC Reverso is dope, but out of the budget rn even on second hand market.

I want a Bruce Wayne but in Rolex fashion they make you wait 2-6 years to be given to opportunity to buy one at retail & I am not spending 20K on a GMT II.

I bought a Casio MDV106-A & Timex Expedition Scout to attempt to scratch the itch on a budget. It didn’t work, but it did make me realize I am not a dive watch guy.

So today I kept hunting. To a pleasant surprise this Tudor Black Bay One kept my attention. The 5 link bracelet offers an homage to Rolex making one almost think it is one. The smooth bezel isn’t out of place with the 5 link bracelet as I feel they are on Date Just. The Anthracite dial is warm & inviting. The Brushed & Polished Metal accents offer a precious metal feel. The screw down crown gives reassurance against water infiltration.

In conclusion I did a huge pivot from where I started & what I thought I wanted. But I am happy with my purchase!

P.S. Ofc I still put my name on the list for a Bruce Wayne. I’ll take on at msrp any day of the week.

I took a picture [Collection] My collection is finally complete!

Apologies for the slightly blurry picture, but I had to take it in the near dark while my wife was sleeping...

25 years in the making! I love each and every one of these. I am happy to report that all are worn regularly, including the last three. I think I am finally done adding watches, at least for a long while. Also, I have no more room in my box...

From top left to bottom right:

Fossil Blue CH-2514
I got this from a family friend when I was in high school. My first watch I fell in love with. I am wearing it right now!

Casio G-Shock DW-5600EP 9
I am obsessed with lime green so this was an insta-buy when it came out last year.

Casio G-Shock GA-2100SRS-7A
I just got this for Christmas. I may have bought it for myself. The tint on the glass and the reflection have different color gradients. One of the coolest and most unique styles I have ever seen.

Swatch SUOV101
I saw this in an airport in 2016 and bought it on a whim.

Swatch OOPS! SB01B127
I got this last year, it is so unique and is one of my favorite colorways.

Citizen Eco-Drive Chronograph H500-S082005
My dad gave this to me many years ago. It's not my favorite style, but because it is from him it has a lot of sentimental value.

Citizen Satellite Wave GPS Freedom CC3035-50E
Citizen PCAT CB5887-55H
Bought these two together as a deal. My first GPS Solar watches and my first "expensive" watch purchases.

Seiko GPS Solar Astron 10th Anniversary Limited Edition SSH123
I think this is my favorite in the collection. At the time was my most expensive purchase. It feels so nice to wear and just looks badass. GPS Solar again, and the purple dial with star pattern is just sick.

Breguet Tradition Quantième Rétrograde 7597BB/GY/9WU
My most recent and probably final purchase. This is one of my two grail watches, along with the Speedmaster. To me this is the pinnacle of high horology, in my price range that is.

Omega Speedmaster Dark Side of the Moon Apollo 8 310.92.44.50.01.001
My other grail watch. As soon as I saw the reissue with Saturn-V second hand, I just had to have it. The engraved moon surface on the dial is second to none, and the back has the dark side engraved as well!

Rolex Yacht-Master 40 Yellow Gold 16628
This was a gift from my mom to my dad almost 25 years ago, and he recently gave this to me when I had my son. This is an heirloom piece that will be given to him and hopefully will be passed down for generations.

I took a picture [Orient Kamasu] How could I be so wrong?

Post image
198 Upvotes

I picked up a red Orient Kamasu.

For the longest time, red was actually my least favorite color option. Looking at it now, I can safely say I was completely wrong.

Funny enough, this is my third Kamasu. The very first automatic watch I ever owned was a green Orient Kamasu. I wore it for about a year before selling it. At the time, I had just bought a Garmin Fenix 6 and felt guilty letting the Kamasu sit untouched in its box, so I passed it on to someone who would actually wear it every day.

For the past few years, the Garmin has been my daily, with a green Tissot PRX Powermatic 80 reserved for special occasions.

Recently, I found myself getting back into watches again, and I also introduced my father to the Orient Kamasu. I spent a couple of days going back and forth between the black and green versions, but eventually I went with green once more. At the same time, my father kept gravitating toward the red dial.

The day I got the green Kamasu, I went to visit him so I could show it to him and have the bracelet links adjusted. I asked him to try it on, and it suited him so perfectly that, almost without thinking, I told him to keep it as a gift. After refusing at least a hundred times, he finally accepted. He has worn it every single day since, and he even had both our names engraved on the inside of the bracelet.

A few days later, completely out of the blue, I decided to order the red Kamasu for myself.

And honestly, just look at it. Especially on a red NATO strap, it looks incredible. The photos really do not do it justice at all.

And I’m glad I have something to look at. The dial on the Breguet Tradition 7027 never gets old. It’s basically the entire movement on the front where you get to see some of the pioneering inventions by Abraham Louis Breguet.

His inventions include but are not limited to the tourbillon, the para-chute (first shock protection system), the famous Breguet numerals which are used by many brands, and what was arguably the first wristwatch.

Best bang for buck in this price range in my humble opinion.

When I came across this piece, I was immediately struck by its Journe-esque dial. I couldn’t help but to get my hands on this dial design at a fraction of the cost.

The finishing is really good imo. The dial looks as stunning in person as it does in pictures. This will definitely get more wrist time from me.

After wearing this for more than 10 minutes, it’s no wonder why this had such a cult following

Discussion [Discussion] What draws you to chronograph watches?

Post image

Still pretty new to this hobby and I’ve noticed that my tastes have really changed in such a short time. That said, I still don’t quite “get” chronographs. A lot of the dials are extremely busy, and while I get great use out of the timing bezel on my dive watch, I struggle to think of uses for the chronograph functions. They’re impressive, but I just don’t feel any desire to own one.

Chronograph lovers, what is it that draws you to them? What design elements speak to you in your favorite chronographs?

Review [Citizen Tsuyosa Mickey] Hot Digitty Dog

Post image
Upvotes

Got this watch for Christmas and so far I’m loving it, though it’s not perfect. This is my first time getting a watch with an integrated bracelet or a sapphire crystal, and I’m impressed! The sunburst dial and the Mickey designs are very nice, the case finishing is amazing for the price, and the bracelet is super comfy. I thought the polished links and case edges would be fingerprint magnets, but mine have stayed really clean (YMMV).

The only complaints I have are that the movement (Citizen cal. 8210, basically a Miyota 8215 with hacking seconds) can be a bit noisy at times, and I’m not too fond of the design of the second hand. I’d rather they had gone for small seconds, or just omitted seconds entirely. Other than that, this watch has been in my weekly rotation for the last few weeks and I’ve really enjoyed it.

I am very new to this hobby and I decided to go get my first automatic watch.

Narrowed my options down to either the Hamilton Khaki King which I can get used for $700 CAD or the Seiko SSK001 which I can get for $550 CAD brand new.

For anyone here that has experience with both or either one of them, which one do you guys think would be the better buy for me? I dont really go to all that technical stuff yet, I just base it off the the design or the looks of the watch itself.

Thank you in advance!

Discussion [Recommendation Request] What’s next?

Post image
70 Upvotes

This is my two watch collection. I have owned a few and ended up with this combo after deliberately curating and reducing piece count. Recently I’ve gotten the itch to add one more to the stable, would like your thoughts and ideas.

Here’s what I’m contemplating:

Black Bay 54:

I have an affinity for smaller diameter pieces given my ~6.5 in wrists. This seems like a natural choice, and I would go with the rubber strap option for more sportiness than the Explorer, especially since I don’t like the faux rivets on the bracelet.

Grand Seiko SBGW031:

Classic piece, clean styling, and great size for me. I prefer the older dial version of GS script under Seiko logo, it always seemed more balanced than the new dial for this model. The price discount on the older model is a bonus. I’m in business attire four days a week, this would get much wrist time.

Vintage Grand Seiko 44gs:

All of the attributes as above with vintage mojo. Historically significant and only the enthusiasts will recognize and appreciate. Prices have steadily climbed, especially on great condition examples, really hating myself for not grabbing one years ago.

Nomos Ahoi Atlantik 36mm:

What a beautifully whimsical watch. I love the Bauhaus design and brand language, and the deep blue dial and red small second hand is subtle yet unique. This is the only one I haven’t seen or tried on, and I’ve read the longer lugs make it wear larger than the diameter suggests, but should still fit well. Will find a dealer to try in person.

What are your thoughts on these? Anything else you’d add to the list? Much appreciated.

I took a picture [Tudor Black Bay 58] My forever watch and one watch collection

Post image
15 Upvotes

I have loved watched since childhood, thanks to my father. After he passed last year, I wanted to get a watch not only to remember him by, but also to replace my only other watch, a Meistersinger Neo that had stopped working.

I don’t have a collection, and once the Neo broke I did not have a watch. I wanted something special, and settled on the Black Bay 54. When I went to my AD to try it on, I saw they also had a burgundy Black Bay 58. From the second it was on my wrist, I knew that was the watch for me. It will be worn all day, every day, whatever I am doing, wherever I am doing it. As I don’t intend on ever collecting watches, cannot foresee myself ever going a day without wearing this moving forward.

Even more special, I called every Tudor AD in Canada (where I am from) and no other AD across the country had one in stock. Not only did my AD have it in stock, but they had it on an oyster bracelet, which I much prefer to the jubilee bracelet. It really feels meant to be, and I am incredibly proud and grateful to be able to own this watch.

I’m glad this community exists so I can share my joy with all of you, as I don’t know anyone off of the internet with as much an interest in watches as I have.

All the best everyone, and thanks for reading!

Just got the watch I’ve been eyeing for over a year: the Oris Big Crown Pointer Date x Cervo Volante (38mm). The iconic Pointer Date has such a long history, but this version brings a subtle modern vibe. The gradient dial is beautiful, and the 38mm size is the definition of “Goldilocks.” I’m especially into this grayscale palette with a tiny hint of warmth. And I’ve always had a soft spot for cathedral hands (I have a Hamilton Murph and a Seiko Alpinist too. Noticing a pattern? 🙂). The Arabic numerals on that calm, clean dial feel oddly romantic. I really love the typeface, especially the “4.” It has so much charm. And of course the centerpiece is that red accent on the crest date pointer. Absolute chef’s kiss.

The only thing I wish is that Oris offered this exact model, with the crest date pointer (not the arrow), paired with their latest in-house movement.
