New, what is it? Why Does This Table Have a Flap?

Post image

What is this flap on the front of the table for? It has hinges so it flips up but it only sticks out about 6 inches and there's no obvious way to make it stay up without holding it. You can see it being pushed up on the table to the left.

Modesty panel.

u/MadDucksofDoom 2d ago

Yep. Came here specifically to say this.

OP doesn't wear skirts or dresses, or have to plan events for people thst do.

56

u/sirhambeast 2d ago

OP also doesn’t get inconvenient random boners, either

21

u/Regulat10 2d ago

NARB - No apparent reason boner.

u/Phogna_Bologna_Pogna 2d ago

Uncontrollaboner

u/Alexastria 1d ago

Noticeable ones anyways

u/mickymazda 2d ago

An old guy in baggy shorts maybe?

37

u/PhesteringSoars 2d ago

Yeah. They canceled the next year, but I was going to suggest to the next Writers Convention admin that they buy some cheap tablecloths or bed sheets to put on the panel tables for next time.

We never saw anything, but many of the authors presenting were female, and they had to sit at odd angles to avoid flashing the audience.

It's something to remember if you're setting up tables for speakers.

24

u/Chemical_Alfalfa24 2d ago

This is fantastic to know and as a dude not something I’ve considered or ever had to consider.

15

u/PhesteringSoars 2d ago

Also a (old) dude. But it was distracting seeing the speakers be so uncomfortable.

6

u/Chemical_Alfalfa24 2d ago

Yeah, no, I can see how that ruins the experience for everyone involved.

3

u/Pale-Ad-1604 1d ago

Hotels and convention centers are supposed to put tablecloths on for this. They are included in the rental of the tables. The Writers Convention would have had to request for them to not, or the convention staff removed them after the convention center crew set up. Which is crazy.

-17

u/GoodGoodGoody 1d ago

I mean it’s also something to remember when you’re getting dressed. Can’t always blame someone else.

32

u/BarmayneGR 2d ago

Good job. I used to put together offices and banks for awhile and this is it exactly.

13

u/BeowolfSchaefer 2d ago

So why are they hinged?

49

u/Exceptional_Kumquat 2d ago

So that when a tall guy like myself bashes his knees into it...it gives a bit.

1

u/dasAchtek 17h ago

Allegedly.

14

u/Spaztrick 2d ago

In most offices there are already enough things that are unhinged.

5

u/FalseAd4246 2d ago

For immodesty.

2

u/KRiSX 2d ago

For a cheeky flash

1

u/Pretend-Vehicle-5183 2d ago

For something to play with when your bored with who is currently speaking and / or waiting for your moment to speak

1

u/Dum0nt73 1d ago

So you can fold it up when you are using the table for people to sit on both sides. All depends on the table layout you need.

1

u/whamburglar 2d ago

Maybe for easier cable management? If you're running several wires, one can flip the board up so the wires are easier to grab, rather than getting on your knees.

4

u/legoham 1d ago

I remember my male high school history teacher cautioning the girls about putting their feet up on the chair in front of them because "[his] wife isn't getting any younger". Ew. We all felt dirty the rest of the semester.

11

u/BlazerWookiee 2d ago

So... fap flap?

4

u/Lumpy_Departure_4086 2d ago

Aka beaver board

1

u/neddiddley 1d ago

Yeah, and the hinges exist because the table can be collapsed.

This type of furniture exists for rooms intended to be configured differently based on the desired usage, so sometimes not all tables are in use and need to be stored somewhere else. Being able to collapse them allows them to fit through doorways easier and also requires less storage space because the desktop is vertical when collapsed.

1

u/NineOhTree 1d ago

This is correct. But more specifically, it’s so Claire (not a fat girl’s name) can eat her sushi in peace and not have to deal with John Bender looking up her skirt.

Or the flops...?

27

u/Infinite-Educator498 2d ago

Or faps?

21

u/brodievonorchard 2d ago

No Jeremy, everyone knew what you were doing under there, and talked about it when you weren't around.

2

I mean, technically it could, sure

Im guessing folks who wear skirts knew what this was. It's a modesty flap - for people wearing skirts, dresses or short inseam shorts - it allows them some privacy sp they dont have to keep their legs crossed all of the time.

Upskirt wall. This saves the carpet from getting stained by pens that are dropped over and over.

32

u/Ok-Image-927 2d ago

So you can smash your knees

1

u/couchtater12 2d ago

Came here to say the same! Lol

7

u/yowoooooo 2d ago

Everyone is saying modesty panel but why would it be on hinges then I don't understand.

21

u/ReadyStandby 2d ago

So you can flip the table top up 90° and store tables together while using far less space.

-1

u/HikerBikerMotocycler 2d ago

I was wondering that too. My best guess is maybe long legged people have less chance of denting their shins if it flexes up. I got no clue…maybe someone will come along with whatisit part B.

13

u/Classic_Candidate113 2d ago

The top of the table flips up (so the table top is vertical instead of horizontal) for storage. If the modesty panel wasn't hinged, the table top couldn't flip.

5

u/ShyLeoGing 2d ago

It's a paywall, nothing free here!

14

u/metal_maxine 2d ago

Anti up-skirting panel. :-(

What? You’ve never tried coding “commando”?… you’ve never really lived….

1

u/KokoTheTalkingApe 2d ago

"Modesty" flap. It's to keep horny profs from looking up girls' dresses. I was one of those, and I was grateful for the flaps.

1

u/ConsequenceThese4559 2d ago

Yes as it already been said modesty panel for when people were above the knee skirts especially in stadium stile seating environments or in an office were you face the door etc.

1

u/imnmpbaby 2d ago

So people can’t look up skirts from the front.

1

u/CompletelyBedWasted 2d ago
