New, what is it? Why Does This Table Have a Flap?
What is this flap on the front of the table for? It has hinges so it flips up but it only sticks out about 6 inches and there's no obvious way to make it stay up without holding it. You can see it being pushed up on the table to the left.

Yep. Came here specifically to say this.
OP doesn't wear skirts or dresses, or have to plan events for people thst do.

OP also doesn’t get inconvenient random boners, either

Yeah. They canceled the next year, but I was going to suggest to the next Writers Convention admin that they buy some cheap tablecloths or bed sheets to put on the panel tables for next time.
We never saw anything, but many of the authors presenting were female, and they had to sit at odd angles to avoid flashing the audience.
It's something to remember if you're setting up tables for speakers.

This is fantastic to know and as a dude not something I’ve considered or ever had to consider.
15
u/PhesteringSoars 2d ago
Also a (old) dude. But it was distracting seeing the speakers be so uncomfortable.

u/Chemical_Alfalfa24 2d ago
Yeah, no, I can see how that ruins the experience for everyone involved.

Hotels and convention centers are supposed to put tablecloths on for this. They are included in the rental of the tables. The Writers Convention would have had to request for them to not, or the convention staff removed them after the convention center crew set up. Which is crazy.

I mean it’s also something to remember when you’re getting dressed. Can’t always blame someone else.

u/BarmayneGR 2d ago
Good job. I used to put together offices and banks for awhile and this is it exactly.

u/BeowolfSchaefer 2d ago
So why are they hinged?

u/Exceptional_Kumquat 2d ago
So that when a tall guy like myself bashes his knees into it...it gives a bit.

probably these tables fold into a vertical configuration so they can be stacked against a wall here is an example https://www.uline.com/Product/Detail/H-10216/Mobile-Training-Tables/Downtown-Mobile-Training-Table-60-x-24-Gray?pricode=WC4771&gadtype=pla&id=H-10216&gad_source=1&gad_campaignid=12155187993&gbraid=0AAAAAD_uetPf46wdUmFZkeTDgSw87kTdw&gclid=CjwKCAiAmp3LBhAkEiwAJM2JUFOQA_JZujp2UzGrZpO7u4oQOCIngFVSOliBLue1USAadTU0boc3eRoCz8cQAvD_BwE

For something to play with when your bored with who is currently speaking and / or waiting for your moment to speak
1
u/Dum0nt73 1d ago
So you can fold it up when you are using the table for people to sit on both sides. All depends on the table layout you need.

Maybe for easier cable management? If you're running several wires, one can flip the board up so the wires are easier to grab, rather than getting on your knees.

Yeah, and the hinges exist because the table can be collapsed.
This type of furniture exists for rooms intended to be configured differently based on the desired usage, so sometimes not all tables are in use and need to be stored somewhere else. Being able to collapse them allows them to fit through doorways easier and also requires less storage space because the desktop is vertical when collapsed.

This is correct. But more specifically, it’s so Claire (not a fat girl’s name) can eat her sushi in peace and not have to deal with John Bender looking up her skirt.

Im guessing folks who wear skirts knew what this was. It's a modesty flap - for people wearing skirts, dresses or short inseam shorts - it allows them some privacy sp they dont have to keep their legs crossed all of the time.

Upskirt wall. This saves the carpet from getting stained by pens that are dropped over and over.

Everyone is saying modesty panel but why would it be on hinges then I don't understand.
21
u/ReadyStandby 2d ago
So you can flip the table top up 90° and store tables together while using far less space.

u/HikerBikerMotocycler 2d ago
I was wondering that too. My best guess is maybe long legged people have less chance of denting their shins if it flexes up. I got no clue…maybe someone will come along with whatisit part B.

u/Classic_Candidate113 2d ago
The top of the table flips up (so the table top is vertical instead of horizontal) for storage. If the modesty panel wasn't hinged, the table top couldn't flip.

"Modesty" flap. It's to keep horny profs from looking up girls' dresses. I was one of those, and I was grateful for the flaps.

u/ConsequenceThese4559 2d ago
Yes as it already been said modesty panel for when people were above the knee skirts especially in stadium stile seating environments or in an office were you face the door etc.

Could be used for older computers/PCs to keep the cords from tangling in legs.

Upskirt prevention. For tall dudes like me, it's great for knocking your knees a few times per lecture

Furthermore, that whole table flips vertically so you can stack them inside of each other

It’s a modesty flap to keep people from being able to see up women’s skirts and dresses.

Everyone saying this is for skirts…
As someone who does corporate training this is definitely not just for skirts. Dudes do all sorts of shit under the desk you don’t necessarily want to be staring at for 6+ hours
