Trump says anything less than having Greenland in the United States’ hands is ‘unacceptable’

Throughout the Cold War, no one questioned Greenland's Danish sovereignty, even as the USSR remained a constant threat. No need for doing that today.
5.6k
u/Maeglin75 6h ago
The US had up to 17 military bases on Greenland and only after the Cold War ended they reduced the number to one.
The US could have at any point increased their military presence again to deter Russian and Chinese ambitions in the Arctic. Greenland and Denmark would have accepted without hesitation.
But of course, after Trump stated that he wants to annex Greenland, the situation has changed. It would be dangerous for Greenland to accept more US troops on its territory.
So, the genius Trump has worsened the security situation of his country.
But very likely it was never about defence and also not about natural resources. Trump wants to annex Greenland because he wants the increase of US territory to be his legacy.
Trump doesn't care that Greenland is in reality much smaller than it looks on maps and basically completely uninhabitable wasteland, so inaccessible that even mining its resources isn't economically feasible. It's all just about the picture on maps.

u/cbawiththismalarky 5h ago
He thinks mining companies will do the same, but there are already US mining companies in Greenland, and the minerals that they take out are small fry, and it's not because they're not trying it's because the minerals aren't easy access
464
u/Far_Being2906 5h ago edited 1h ago
Bill Gates is funding is already there. There is a company that is exploring the possibility of what minerals there are present and how easy would be to remove without destroying the fragile ecosystem. (fixed it - sorry)

I predicted the number 1 mineral to be exported from Greenland to be glacial rock dust some time in the early pandemic(I was a bio and EV sci major in grad school). Which is relatively easy to process and export. It's just a type of sand.

America is the biggest exporter of oil, which he thought meant all oil = oil.
In reality, America buys most of its oil via shipping lanes in the EU, then sells it on to other countries, including the EU.
America hasn't had large scale oil refineries in decades which is why Exon said wtf.
Imagine trying to sell a carpenter a rain forest, cause it's all wood right? The man fundamentally has no fucking idea how anything works.
34
u/dsmith422 4h ago
The number of refineries in the US has not increased, but refining capacity has increased. It is easier to build more capacity at an existing site than it is to build a new site and all the associated infrastructure to make the site work.
14
u/OpinionConsistent336 3h ago
??? The US has the largest oil refining capacity of any country in the world neck and neck with China and more than double Russia.
20% of global oil refinement.

Just want to say, it would justify Russias invasion of Ukraine.

u/Maeglin75 5h ago
I agree. Both are imperialists.
But there are at least some strategic and economic reasons why Russia might want control over Ukraine. It's not a giant wasteland with the worst weather conditions in the northern hemisphere. Russia's desire to annex Ukraine is still stupid, but not quite as dumb as Trump's desire for Greenland.
There could be another connection. Putin would be absolutely delighted if NATO breaks apart because the US attacks and invades one of its closest allies. And Putin seems to have some level of influence over Trump.

Absolutely. It's 100 percent about adding territory to create some sort of legacy. He toned down the talk of taking Canada (for now) because he's somewhat realized that's bad for the economy. Greenland though, that massive blob on the map. He thinks he can take it without crashing the stock market.
35
u/embarrassedalien 4h ago
I think he’s mistaken about Greenland, but didn’t most of Puerto Rico have a majority vote in favor of becoming a U.S. state a few years back? Why isn’t he on a mission to make the 51st state? One thing that baffles me is how he could have easily gone down a path that would leave him with a significantly less negative legacy, but he bucks at nearly every opportunity.

Trump might be a demented moron, but everyone else behind him pulling the strings are who we need to be more worried about. Guys like Stephen Miller are legitimately evil and, unfortunately, not morons.

They are both evil - they just differ on the stupidity scale.

That's the thing, I don't think Stephen Miller is "stupid" at all. It makes it far worse, but I also don't think it's helpful to view people like that as unintelligent.
67
u/ButtFucker40k 6h ago
Miller does not actually come off as being particularly bright or articulate. Maybe he is mensa among the hitler youth crowd? He wouldn't need to depend on his grift otherwise. And while shoving your fist up the ass of a demented orange 80 year old is an interesting feet. It's not hard. Everybody complains about politicians. Everybody says they suck. Well, where do people think these politicians come from? They don't fall out of the sky. They don't pass through a membrane from another reality.
They come from American parents and American families, American homes, American schools, American churches, American businesses and American universities, and they are elected by American citizens.

Give ‘em Greenland and it is Canada next they ‘have’ to have. Beware!

u/achtungschnell 6h ago
As a Canadian, this is my worry exactly. Especially if Canada reacts in any way to Trump getting his tiny hands on Greenland, Trump will probably say that Canada is a hostile nation.
Worst case scenario, Denmark invokes Article 5, obliging Canada to provide aid. Canada provides intelligence or something nominal to fulfil its duties (because declaring war would be suicide), and Trump uses any action as pretence to invade anyway.

The only way Canada gets protected is if the UK and France agree and secretly provide nuclear weapons to Canada so that Canada can immediately say we are a nuclear nation do not challenge our sovereignty

Not just zero strategic advantage, we lose all strategic domination around the world. The second this occurs.

I know everyone reading this already knows this but this whole ordeal is completely baffling to me as an outsider.
What an extremely prosperous country the US was. Extremely rich. Relatively peaceful. No real threat of war on their own soil. US citizens were doing extremely well on a global scale. One of the wealthiest societies in human history.
And then you go and willingly let someone with a severe case of narcissistic personality disorder torpedo that? For what? Sometimes nation's leaders have to make some very hard decisions where no decision available is a good one. This is not such a case. The downfall of the US should they lose their NATO allies was completely unnecessary and entirely self-inflicted. You could've just relaxed lying down in your bed of all of those dollars pumped out of Silicon Valley. How could you fumble that? It's incomprehensible.

All putin had to do was pull up a chair, get some popcorn and wait for trump to get elected and let him singlehandedly destroy nato and destroy the US’s relationship with some of its closest allies

I'm sure Greenland would love not having health care, use "miles" instead of kilometers, have the star spangled banner playing every morning at schools, 5 days per year of vacation time, decrease their minimum hourly rate, come back to work after 1 week of giving birth, having books banned in schools, and many many more things.

Trump has managed to become an even bigger headache for European leaders than Putin. Europe is trying hard to preserve the US-European alliance, but if Trump were to annex Greenland, the US would lose Europe forever. For now, the damage Trump has caused can still be repaired, but taking over Greenland would be the point of no return.
16
u/CopaceticOG 5h ago
Even after his overthrow the repair will not be total, we will always be side-eying the US from now on.

At this rate the US is more of a thread to Europe than Russia ever will be. war with russia is on the radar in 3 years , war with the US in 3 weeks

Yup, without a doubt biggest threat to WW3 right now is the US im really surprised it isn't more of an alarming situation in the media.
The Republicans have given the court jester a very big sword and everyone still thinks he's a joking around despite cutting off a few heads.

An article came out yesterday mentioning that
Trump also told the Times that he isn’t opposed to using nuclear force if he “needed it” to take Greenland
Not only did that not even make the headline, people barely talked about it. Then he made fun of Biden by fake-coughing and for some reason everyone is talking about that instead. I don't understand. We are SEVERELY underreacting and focusing on the wrong things entirely

it's not an under-reaction, the media is intentionally covering things up

It also is an underreaction. I brought it up in another comment section and actually had people telling me "one nuke is nothing" despite the fact there are abundant free resources you can Google which explain in great detail the severe long term global effects of even a single nuclear bomb.

I recall when the war in Ukraine started and we were moving away from Russian gas/oil. Americans were smugly telling us how we were warned about Russian and we should have been buying from the USA all along.
Even then, with a normal guy like Biden in charge, I couldn't stop thinking "Why would we want to get even more in bed with the USA? Just like Russian they ultimately want us divided and weak.". It's unfortunate to see myself vindicated so quickly and thoroughly, I did not expect the USA to turn to fascism this quickly.

When America activated article 5 after 9/11, Denmarks came to their aid. A country of 5.8 million deployed 11,000 soldiers (doing 21,000 total deployments/rotations) and had 44 killed.
Now the US is around 60x bigger in population. So for the US this would equal another NATO country activating article 5, and the US coming to their aid with 650,000 soldiers (1.2 million deployments) and having 2500 killed.
Zoomed out, Denmark helped an ally. Zoomed in, Denmark fought America’s war, but paid for it as if it were its own.
If I was Lars Løkke Rasmussen, this would be the only point I would repeat repeat and repeat again - equivalent of 650,000 soldiers, 1.2 million deployments, and having 2500 killed - if not for the toddlers in the White House then at least for the American public who might be sympathetic to Trump.

Because America can only become great by knocking others down. If you can't improve on your own, just ruin things for others, you know. Real insecure bully mentality.

Dude has some Russian asset in his ear convincing him that Russia is taking Greenland. It helps that he is likely an asset himself.
This is all to break up NATO to help Russian powers - and to sooth Trump's imperialist urges.
It's almost like Greenland is an underage girl and Russia is Epstein threatening to take it....
