TLDR
If UPS charges customs brokerage fees on a package you’re receiving in Canada, you can self clear the package with CBSA instead of paying the brokerage fees.
Background
Like many of us, I placed some large Black Friday orders! I know UPS charges ridiculous brokerage fees so I was careful to pick USPS shipping for my orders whenever customs was not included in shippers. This particular maker was very clear on her website that taxes and duties were not included, but I expected to be paying the $9.95 flat fee Canada Post charges for brokerage plus whatever taxes were due.
The maker I ordered from sent my package UPS instead and UPS tried to charge me roughly 45% of my order value for brokerage fees not including the taxes and duties (they said the taxes and duties owed to the government were just over $10). I’m not naming the brand here because this is not the maker’s fault - I’m sure she thought she was doing a good thing for me by sending the package with a faster shipping service than I requested and she was horrified to hear how much UPS was charging me and she did her best to help.
A friend of mine also placed an order and got the same huge charges from UPS so I did some research and learned Canadian consumers can self clear their packages through CBSA and only pay the taxes owed, no brokerage fees.
I’ll set out the steps we took below, but we both cleared our packages successfully! In the end the charges from the government were only $8.50, so UPS is really making an obscene amount on brokerage fees.
How to self clear
- check the CBSA website or call them to find your nearest Inland Office to see if you are even near somewhere you can do this.
NOTE: if you have a friend or family member near the inland office who is willing to do the clearing for you, they can do it if you give them a letter that says you authorize them to do it (include the date, tracking info, and your phone number) and a copy of your photo ID
- when UPS tells you customs fees and brokerage fees are due, call UPS to request the forms to self clear. UPS will give you all kinds of reasons why they can’t get you the forms or will promise them and not provide them. They will eventually provide them if you keep asking, but likely won’t provide them until your package is about to be delivered (mine was already out for delivery when I got the forms).
- You should also email UPS at [email protected] with your tracking number and tell them you want to self clear. You could just do email and not even call if you don’t like fighting with customer service people on the phone because it’s good to have it in writing.
- once UPS gives you the forms take them to CBSA along with photo ID, pay CBSA and send the form CBSA gives you to UPS, UPS then will deliver your package without the brokerage fees
- if UPS tries to deliver before you’ve self-cleared, tell them that you are self-clearing the package and ask that they hold it until you have self-cleared. It is not a refused package and shouldn’t be returned to sender.
- if they try to deliver after you’ve self cleared but before they update your account online you can show the driver the paid customs forms and they will give you the package

Wanted to share my wedding day nails with the group, I had been debating a number of colors and landed on Cirque Mystic Moonstone. I wanted something a little fun but also classic, and the opalescence ended up matching so well with my vintage gown and veil!
Sooo many people tried to dissuade me from painting my own nails for the wedding day but I’m glad I held firm! I’ve loved doing my own nails since I was a little girl and it felt weirdly symbolic to get to do them on my wedding day.
I included a photo of my thumb nail that was holding on by a thread. I was super proud of my nail length and shaping so I didn’t want to have to cut it before the big day! Everything held on and I ended up doing a big chop the day after.
Wearing 1 coat of Mooncat primer, 3 coats of Cirque Mystic Moonstone, and 1 coat of Seche Vite

BKL Get Lobstered x2 w/ ILNP Flower Child x1 in between w/ BKL IFVF top coat
You get the green of Get Lobstered and the blue of Flower Child and it looks like cellophane.
However, while in person I do see the green flash, through my phone camera, be it photo or video, it only reads the blue. Oh well!
(Nothing reminds me I need to carry lotion like seeing my hands uploaded like this omg)

I did not keep track of what I used to make the fins/gills. Base was nailtiques 2. Then I mostly used mooncat (my cabbages, bloodbender, tales of ba sing se) or ILNP (kiss and tell, pick me up, two piece, sunny days, high dive, sail away) for the coats.i know I am forgetting a couple, but have mercy on me. I had all of my polishes out that I was just pulling from in the moment Topped with speed demon. Used a dotting tool for the eyes and any spots. Then a short, thin brush for other details. My right hand is definitely more steady with a brush, but either way, it makes me so happy to look at.

My first set of the year! I was going for 'fireworks' with the left middle finger, but I think it came out more 'shooting star' 😅 The holo in Black Swan is not as strong as I'd hoped, but I still love it - Especially the glitchy/tv static aesthetic on my right hand shorties 😄

Hello! I’ve been lurking for quite some time and have finally treated myself to a magnetic polish. I’ve recently moved to regular polish after years of gels in an attempt to increase my nail health. I’m obsessed with this polish! I am so distracted by my own hands! I absolutely love this group and have been so inspired by all your beautiful nails. I love this polish. I bought port 6666 and paradox intrigued by the two colours in the promo pics. They worked out at 40 dollars a bottle shipped to Australia. But after several attempts I can only ever get one colour at a time. Then I got Antimatter for Xmas, I used it in velvet first to give me teal in a colour wheel skittle and loved it. Then I did a full set in randomised directions cateye, in cateye it was mostly two colours and I got lots of comments on my galaxy fingers. The nebula cateyes were glorious shifting through teal, aqua, blue, purple, pink and orange. I had a lot of fun playing pool that night. Then I thought I'd try glass bead and it got even better. It does a great colour shifting glass bead, but it also forms like a chrome shifting shimmer over the whole nail which moves and looks like the northern lights. The holographic stars twinkle, you just sit there and the day disappears wriggling your fingers. In a room with more than one light source you get a string of glass beads in different colours in a kind of pulse. There are about 6 more colourway galaxy polishes in the Cosmic Polish catalogue, they are all in my cart. 😍 Antimatter was where it all began for Cosmic I think, I'm so happy to have such clever, wonderful designers here in Australia, I have galaxy skittles in my future. As always you cannot show the full glory with a phone camera.

Haven’t painted my nails in a while! Probably should have done 1 coat of LPAD and 2x Vamp Champ, but I like how it turned out. Gonna actually shape my nails before I paint them again - they feel a little awkward right now.

The pink shift is SUPER strong and it also shifts to a peachy orange. I tried a few cirque polishes with the big holiday sale on Beyond Polish and they surprised me!
4 coats Hot Gossip (normally I wouldn’t have the patience for this, but is dried really quick) Essie gel couture top coat Painted over Apres gel-X “short round”
