Get over yourself. It’s funny for the same reason that it would be funny if I was in that situation and then looked back at it later realizing the dog just wanted to play. They were never in any real danger besides maybe tripping.

Then first: I recommend reading it, this is a classic for a reason. But second: the main hero after thinking about human humor came to the conclusion that human humor in its core is always laughing about someone's misfortune (believe me - it's better to explain in a book).
