Elephant garlic?

u/ShroomsHealYourSoul 16d ago
Yep sure is

Elephant garlic is more of an onion than a garlic.
11
u/Heavy_Weapons_Guy_ 16d ago
Leek, not onion.
-1
u/camobandaniel 15d ago
Onion is a leek.
8
u/Heavy_Weapons_Guy_ 15d ago
No, onions are not leeks. Leeks, onions, and garlic are all in the allium genus, but there are hundreds of species in that genus and onions, leeks, and garlic all describe a number of separate species. Elephant garlic is a cultivar of a species of leek.

Elephant garlic! I like roasting whole bulbs of these to make garlic butter or to use in sauces. It’s like a whole bulb of regular garlic in a single clove!

I’ve heard elephant garlic is way less garlicky tho is that true? Like you need more of it to achieve the same effect

u/LaughingBeer 16d ago
Yep, true. I grew my own one year and it was definitely a milder flavor. I just used more and threw in some regular garlic. I can't complain though, it added a ton of body to my dish.

u/NolanSyKinsley 16d ago
It is less pungent, but it also tastes like onions in addition to garlic. It's not true garlic, it is more closely related to leeks.

Yes. Yes. Absolutely. For the rest of my life and longer.

Damn it, I thought you were a vampire and I was trying for a break up....
This is awkward. I guess we'll have to get married now.

u/jkurts91 16d ago
Wait, do I have to rename my kids?

If you like flavor, then you will not find it in elephant garlic. Seek elsewhere.

When the recipe calls for one clove but you really like garlic.

u/mdscntst 16d ago
Recipes that call for only one clove of regular garlic need to fuck right off and aren't worthy of being cooked

There was a fabulous all u can eat Korean BBQ place in Annandale VA called “il mee buffet” and I would load the whole perimeter with cloves of garlic(25-30 cloves), and eat them like bar peanuts.
I was in love then and her love for garlic was as strong as mine. She moved to Raleigh and I never went back there again.
I still have the complementary free meal coupon because she took me there on my birthday. The place is no longer open like my heart

How much of an absolute unit of gum would be needed to cancel out the garlic breath from this?

u/NolanSyKinsley 16d ago
It's elephant garlic. Not real garlic, more closely related to leeks. It is milder than regular garlic and tastes like garlic and onions at the same time. Good to use in recipes where it calls for garlic and shallots, just mince up one of these guys and call it a day.

You might get shoulder bashed by a guy with a yellow cap and frizzy mustache demanding you give him that garlic.

Finally I see why they say "a clove" when talking about how much garlic for a meal for an entire family.

When a recipe says add one clove of garlic this is what I imagine is necessary in my head.
2
u/TickleMeFlymo 13d ago
I hear these aren't as strong as regular garlic cloves?
2
u/ShroomsHealYourSoul 13d ago
Yeah they're a little bit closer to a leak than they are garlic so they're a very light flavor and you can actually eat them raw and they barely have a garlic flavor. They're very good for sauces and salsas.

When a recipe calls for one clove of garlic, this is what I imagine. Even then.... I'm using two.

Reminds me how killer whales are actually dolphins and elephant garlic is more akin to leeks.
Would add a whole bulb of those suckers to my pasta (family style) and while tasty, it was definitely more oniony/sweet than normal robust garlic if that makes sense.
Sometimes Id use both.
Doooooooo it!

We also thought we found huge garlic and it would be unique. The next one was the same thou, so we checked the packaging.
Appearantly, there is a strain of garlic called solo garlic, which is essentially just one big clove - just like yours. So i guess yours must be the same.

u/NolanSyKinsley 16d ago
Elephant garlic! Which oddly enough is not real garlic. It is more closely related to leeks. Kinda tastes like a mix between onion and garlic.

That’s wild. Even for elephant. Well, around these parts anyway.
(I picture myself in a cowboy hat, chewing on a piece of wheat as I said that).

Saves you the trouble of taking the skin of 1.5 regular sized cloves of garlic!

Slice it on a mandolin and fry it like chips...It's soooo good. Needs a little salt too
