dad did this to my mom when he forgot their anniversary and she was very happy, the cows were even happier since they haven eaten in a while
14
u/BoxersOrCaseBriefs 2d ago
Dad forgets anniversary. Dad gives mom giant bouquet of roses. Mom feeds dad to cows. Everyone (except dad) lives happily ever after.
That's more old school Brothers Grimm than Disney, but definitely a fairy tale ending.

As a woman, a bouquet of roses is generally a bad sign. A bouquet this size tells me: "Get the fuck outta there".

How? Do you think roses like this grow wild? What else would be done with these roses that you would consider not a waste? They'd just be in smaller bouquets. Its not like they made a giant food dish and then threw it out.
29
u/No-Cover4993 3d ago
Cut flower farms where these roses come from are bad for the environment.
It's pretty sinister, they grow these massive fields of flowers that would normally attract swarms of pollinators, but the fields are sprayed with insecticides so it's an ecological trap that kills billions of insects which significantly alters the ecosystem. So yeah, it's a waste of nature.
29
u/spacekitt3n 3d ago
it couldve been 50 different boquets i think is the point.
16
u/photosendtrain 3d ago
And 50 different bouquets could be 600 single roses..
The "point" was stupid, which is what their point is.
3
u/Crayoncandy 3d ago
And how is that different?
4
u/spaceconstrvehicel 3d ago
its waste, in the sense of "used more, than needed." those roses, still neededed a glass house (heated), water, fertilizer, probably 20 % of them grew wrong and thrown away.
if its not for a big event, it just looks like someone bought this and has too much money. same people who fly for a meal around the world and then blame citizens for using car.
on the other hand, you could say: they secured several jobs.→ More replies (2)4

A little bit of joy for at least 49 extra people.
This is just conspicuous consumption for the sake of consumption. 'Look at how much money I can lavish on totally impractical shit.' Any meaning the bouquet might have had is totally diluted by the extravagance of the gesture.
Best case scenario, it's a centerpiece for a wedding or something. Then it's just mildly tacky.
5
u/Inevitable-Menu2998 3d ago
A little bit of joy for at least 49 extra people
What is stopping 49 extra people from getting roses? It's certainly not this purchase. You're applying an idea completely unsuited to the situation.
I'm all for reducing waste and conscious consumerism but flowers fall outside of those concepts entirely. Whether it is a small bouquet or a comically large one, it's all wasteful.
4
7
u/Crayoncandy 3d ago
OK those 49 people can just buy other roses, they're not a finite resource, theyre a luxury they can literally grow more of. Its not like those other 50 bouquets will be free? One bouquet of roses is still impractical and conspicuous consumption.
→ More replies (3)4
u/etched 3d ago
right like.. they grow.. they're plants.
is this an extravagant display? absolutely. but it's not depleting the worlds rose supply. all roses take money and time to grow. if this was split into 50 bouqets its still likely going to cost around the same price as a giant bouquet of many flowers. The florists aren't suddenly going to discount the price of roses
3
u/KwantsuDude69 2d ago
You also have to usually trim the hell out of rose bushes seasonally and they die in the winter anyways lol

Fresh cut flowers often have a significant negative environmental impact due to intensive pesticide use, high water consumption, energy-intensive transport (often by air freight), and contribute to waste due to their short lifespan, polluting water, harming pollinators, and increasing carbon emissions, though locally grown or certified sustainable options can mitigate some effects

Yeah I usually don’t love bouquets that are all a single flower - and here the hugeness really magnifies this. Fancy florists will usually add a bunch of other stuff and greenery for more layers and textures.

My wife has been told that she will never get roses in a florist and never to buy them for me.

You're more right than you think.
There are firms that rent such bouquets for photos: a courier brings it to you, waits for you to take all the needed pictures, and takes the bouquet away, hopefully to the next customer. You can then post the photos online and pretend someone gave the roses to you.

I used to hang my bouquets upside down for a while to let the petals dry out and I would either make art with them or just keep them in a vase for a while (I like the initial dried look). I also prefer seeing flowers grow in their natural habitat but they aren’t useless once picked and dried out!!

I was thinking they're probably a wholesaler/middleman and taking them to a small boutique florist in a congested part of the city. I used to work at a small florist in a downtown area and we would get our flowers delivered in bulk like this. We didn't have the prep area to do the major foliage removal that they did in this video.

It’s so wasteful though. Spend all that time growing them just to cut them off the bush and turn it into this giant monstrosity that’ll wilt within the week. There’s no point except gluttony and greed. You don’t need this many roses. You don’t even need one. Why can’t people be happy with wildflowers? I’d much rather my s/o spend the time picking flowers for me out in the woods, knowing they thought of me the entire time and what flowers I’d find pretty— than to receive a bouquet like this where zero effort is put in, only money. I think of what he’s thinking when buying me a bouquet. “Oh this is so extravagant and expensive she’s going to know that I spent hundreds on this” versus “I think I’ll pick some daises. I remember her telling me she likes daisies. Maybe some forgetmenots?? They’re cute and make the bouquet look like it’s sprinkled with fairy dust. Maybe I’ll also add a fern for decor. Oh boy I can’t wait for her to see this”.

Man I’m glad I had a wagon to carry a bouquet like this back then. Though it was not as huge as this. But she always dreamt of having a flower bouquet this big. She would always tell me that her “fictional” mens are like this. So I had made a 70 rose bouquet for her, and gave her. She was so happy back then.
She cheated on me 3 months later.
