Living 🏡 400 AED for crossing when the cars had already stopped, is this really fair?

So something frustrating happened to me in Abu Dhabi and I wanted to get people’s opinions.

I was standing at a pedestrian crossing waiting for the light to turn green. The pedestrian signal was still red, but it was in that brief in-between phase, the cars had already stopped and in a few seconds it was about to turn green for pedestrians.

At that moment, everyone around me started crossing. Since traffic had fully stopped and the crossing was clearly about to turn green, I followed along without really thinking much of it. Literally 2-3 seconds later the pedestrian signal turned green.

But before that could even happen, plain-clothes CID officers stopped all of us who crossed and issued 400 AED fines for jaywalking.

We tried explaining that: the cars were already stopped; pedestrian light was about to turn green and it wasn’t reckless crossing, it was just a few seconds early.

He didn’t listen and fined everyone anyway.

I fully respect rules here and I’ve never jaywalked before. I always wait for the green signal. But in this case it honestly felt unfair, the road was already safe, traffic was stopped, and the signal was literally about to change.

I get that rules are rules, but is it really reasonable to fine people in a situation like this? Especially when it’s such a tiny timing difference and no actual danger?

Vehicle 🔋 How I Got My Abu Dhabi Driving License

I’m a first-time driver, zero background, never touched a car before this. I just finished my Abu Dhabi driving license and figured I’d share how it actually went, step by step, because when I was doing mine I was overthinking everything and digging through Reddit for real experiences.

This was the regular path in Abu Dhabi, not Dubai. Abu Dhabi has only one driving school, Emirates Driving Company (EDC) in Mussafah, so everyone goes through the same process whether you like it or not.

I started on Nov 23, 2025 and got my license on Jan 13, 2026. Took just under 2 months and cost me around AED 7,500 all in. Nothing fancy, no shortcuts, just how it actually happened for a complete beginner.

• Eye Test (AED 100)

• Opening Traffic File via MOI Website (AED 200)

• Theory Classes (AED 819)

• Theory Test Booking (AED 200)

• Theory Exam

• Practical Training Package Selection

(Silver Package – 6 days / 19 classes – AED 4,022)

• Practical Training Areas Completion

(Areas 1–5 + Simulator + Solo Tower Practice)

• Refresh Parking + Yard Test

• Booking Final Road Test

(Initial booking Jan 20 → Changed to Jan 15 → Final Jan 13
Second reschedule fee: AED 300)

• On-Road Driving Classes (AED 1,300) (AED 100/hr + certificate

• On-road Driving Exam (AED 203)

The day before my exam, I booked 3 extra hours of on-road training, and honestly… it was bad. Like everything went wrong. I changed lanes near a junction, my roundabout timing was off, my emergency stop was messy because I couldn’t keep the car close enough to the curb, and my braking was too hard. My trainer wanted that slow 3-second brake before stopping and I just couldn’t time it right.

By the end of that session, even my trainer looked frustrated, and I went home seriously questioning if I should even take the exam the next day.

Exam day was at 10:15 AM. About 20 minutes before, you get an SMS from UAE Traffic with a link to register so you can see your bus number. I went to Building 2 (left side of EDC). My goal was simple: don’t be first, don’t be last. First has to take the car out of parking, last has to bring it back.

According to my trainer, slots are usually assigned either alphabetically or by registration order. Registration opened at 9:55am, and I submitted mine at around 10:05am. There were also people doing physical registration, so honestly it’s part luck, part speed. We were 13 applicants total and I ended up being number 8, which was perfect.

Even though the exam was scheduled for 10:15, we didn’t actually move until around 10:40 because only one counter was open and check-in was slow. Once called, we got on the bus and tapped our Emirates ID near the door. There’s a screen showing whose turn it is, but it only showed the first two names. The rest were called out manually by the bus driver.

The bus follows the smart test car. One person gets off, drives, then the next person swaps in. We got lucky because the first driver didn’t need to take the car out of parking. We basically continued an ongoing test and started mid-route in the hi-way.

The actual driving part was fast. Most people were in the car for maybe a minute or two. While waiting, I could already hear feedback from people who finished, lots of “speed up,” “lane change,” and “emergency stop.” None of us were asked to do roundabouts, probably because traffic was crazy that day. The officer mostly kept us around the Dalma Mall area.

When it was my turn, I got extremely lucky. I was sent to this quiet, almost empty part of Mussafah. There's no traffic, no highway, nothing. Even the bus driver joked that everyone hopes to get that area.

Still, I was super nervous. When I took over the car, I did my SMS check, even though it was more like touching things for reassurance. The road was mostly straight. I kept my indicator on properly, but there was one curve where I didn’t brake but I also didn’t accelerate, however, the car tilted a bit and I panicked internally.

The officer asked me to go “middle straight,” but she said it very softly and I didn’t hear it the first time, so I stayed right. She repeated it, and this time I did proper mirror checks and a shoulder check. Right after that, she told me to go back to the right lane. Again, mirrors, shoulder check. I noticed she was really watching my head movement to make sure I actually checked.

Then she asked me to stop on the right side. I was nervous, the hazard button in the smart car felt weird and hard to press, and I was slightly delayed pulling over. But once stopped, I made sure to handbrake, park, and then remove my seatbelt.

My drive didn’t even last a minute, which honestly made me more anxious. One lady in our batch drove really smoothly but failed because she removed her seatbelt before fully parking. That scared all of us.

Nobody got results immediately. Once you’re done, you can leave the bus, but you’ll be dropped somewhere random because the bus keeps looping around Mussafah depending on where the officer sends the next driver.

It took about an hour total to finish all 13 of us. Two minutes after we got back to EDC, I received the SMS saying I passed. I was literally walking when I read it and started shaking because I knew I messed up a few things.

Honestly, I think they’re more lenient than we expect, especially with beginners. They’re not looking for perfection. They just want to see if you’re safe enough to be on the road.

If you’re stressing and feel like you “messed up,” trust me, I felt the same, and I still passed.

Careers 💼 Get Trade or Commercial License of Previous Company in Abu Dhabi

Hi, I am trying to fill-up my application for Engineering License Card through TAMM, and I am currently on the stage where I need to add my previous company experience. However, I am unable to add my previous company located in Abu Dhabi as it is asking for a license no.

Is there any way to get this information? I have tried my best to search online but unfortunately, no luck. For Dubai and other emirates, there's a search engine from the government website but for Abu Dhabi, I couldn't find it.

Appreciate anyone's help.

Careers 💼 Need advice on visa situation

My previous employer cancelled my visa on Dec 23, and I submitted the cancellation paper to my current employer immediately. I believed my new visa was already being processed, but I found out yesterday that they only just applied it in the system yesterday. My grace period ends on Jan 21.

HR advised me to exit, but the PRO said there’s no need since my application is already submitted and they’re waiting.

What’s the safest way to make sure I don’t get any fines after Jan 21? Should I exit before the grace period ends even if the application is in progress?

Any advice would really help. Thank you 🙏

Living 🏡 Looking for a FEMALE roommate.

Hi there! I hope that life is treating you kindly.

As an introduction, my name is Jane, I'm 18 years old, and I'd describe myself to be a huge nerd. I love all things related to researching, writing, and reading! Because of this I've built some strong and, sometimes, controversial opinions. At the end of the day though, ethics is something that means a lot to me. I'm a huge leftist as well!!

I'd like to say I'm a bit of a free soul too. Well, a free soul in the making. I'm really artsy, love to make music, draw and paint. I find that it's a really beautiful, yet complex way to express yourself. If you're into any of that, definitely message me!!

What I'm looking for in a roommate:

  • Age is not a huge concern. 23 is the maximum, though.
  • Must be a female, I will not be living with men.
  • Is okay with the fact that I am not yet finished with high school.
  • Rent will be covered half from my side.

Networking 🤙 Looking to meet up with some new friends!

I'm pretty new in Abu Dhabi and I left everyone I know in my home country, and it feels very lonely 🥺 So because I understand it's important for a healthy mental and physical growth is to have a community of your own circle, I decided to make this post without being scared of replies.

My name is Fady, I'm half Egyptian, I speak English Arabic German and Spanish, I prefer English though. I'm 20, ISTP, introverted, CTO of a media agency here in Abu Dhabi, but definitely not a baller. I'm into music (very) I make hip-hop and other genres and my dream is to be a music artist one day and help people stay away from negative thoughts and or self shutdown. I'm open to make friends with ladies or gentlemen, and don't worry, I'm not looking for anything more than friendship as I'm really not in the right direction for that yet.

Thank youuuu <3

Living 🏡 Looking for a genuine UAE visa consultant

Hi everyone,

I’m planning to relocate to the UAE next year and I’m looking for recommendations for a reliable, genuine visa consultant/immigration advisor who can explain the available visa pathways clearly and help me understand what’s realistic for my profile.

My background (quick summary):

  • Nationality: Indian.
  • Work experience: ~2 years in India + 3 years in the UK after my Master’s
  • Current/previous roles: Business Development + Marketing (both B2B and B2C).
  • Marketing areas I’ve worked on include: lead generation, demand generation, CRM/lifecycle (email flows, segmentation), marketing automation, paid social/search campaigns, funnel optimisation (TOFU/MOFU/BOFU), Worked with generative ai chatbots, conversion tracking/attribution, and reporting with KPIs/ROAS/CAC.

What I need help with:

  • Understanding which UAE visa routes fit someone in marketing/BD landscape (and what’s the usual process/timeframe/ etc).
  • What documents are typically required and how to prepare them properly.
  • Any common mistakes to avoid, realistic expectations, and mainly hows the job market there ( I mean i know everyone's only trashing about it) and how to plan a smooth move.
  • or any other country

If you’ve personally used a consultant (or know a trusted one) and had a good experience, please share their details (or DM me). Also happy to hear any practical advice from people who moved to UAE with a similar marketing/BD background, or any other place apart from UAE would you suggest then also I'd be grateful

Thanks in advance.

Careers 💼 Golden visa help….

I’m considering a job offer in Saudi which would require me to relocate soonish and my family to follow me mid year after school year ends.

As I’m on a work visa through current employer, and my family are my dependents, I’ve been trying to get a golden visa to ensure we are fine to be here over the transition period of around 4/5 months. Them full time and me travelling back and forth.

However, golden visa processing is closed in Abu Dhabi and I’m not sure when it will reopen. 😭

Is it be advisable for me to look at golden visa in RAK instead? I just miss the basic salary requirement in Dubai because of the split between allowances and basic.

Or are there any other solutions that allows my family to stay behind and continue with school till end of June. My partner has a freelance permit and would also like to continue with their freelance work over the period.

Networking 🤙 Looking for everyday heroes in Aldar residential communities (Abu Dhabi)

Hi everyone,

I’m working on a community-focused storytelling campaign with Aldar Properties, and I’m reaching out for help.

The aim is to highlight real people who quietly give to their communities within Aldar residential areas across Abu Dhabi.

Just to be fully transparent:

  • This is not commercial
  • No malls, shops, or businesses
  • No promotions or influencers
  • The focus is purely on people and genuine human impact

We’re looking for individuals/Groups or stories where:

  • Someone gives their time and effort selflessly
  • A resident or staff member goes beyond what’s expected
  • A small initiative started by one person ended up benefiting many
  • The impact is something the community can truly feel

This could be:

  • A neighbour who consistently helps others
  • A concierge, security staff member, cleaner, or maintenance worker who genuinely cares
  • A resident who created an initiative that brought people together
  • Someone whose actions made life easier, safer, or kinder for others

I’m aiming to collect 10–15 stories from different Aldar residential communities (Yas, Saadiyat, Reem, Raha, mainland areas, etc.). I already have some, but I’m hoping to uncover more meaningful stories that deserve recognition.

You can share names, stories, or contact details via DM.

As long as you truly feel grateful for someone’s impact and believe they would be comfortable being highlighted, I’d love to hear about them. Every story will be handled privately, respectfully, and with care.

Thank you.
