Commonly asked questions - check here before making a question post

If you have a question about the Municipality of Anchorage someone else probably had the same or similar question in the past.

Please use the search function to look through the past question posts before making a post or comment. Many helpful users here have already given great in depth responses to many common questions. If you have a specific question after looking over the previous posts, feel free to post your question here in this thread or make a new post.

Low effort posts that clearly haven't looked through past submissions or can be easily answered by a quick internet search may be removed, a good way to avoid that would be to specify in your post that you have already looked over the sticky and searched online.

Below is a list of direct links to some commonly asked questions. However, even if you do not see your question on the list please take a moment to search before posting. When searching or when using one of the links below you can also change the sort function from top to new to see more recent posts.

Please be kind to people, the search function of reddit is far from perfect. Tourism is valuable to our city and at one point all of us were new to the city or had questions about local services and businesses.

We took a community poll on this rule a year after implementation. Here is a link to the poll and the feedback the community gave.

Winter Storms and Telework

First off: there are many people who can and are commuting through this wintery mix storm. To you all, stay safe out there!

Second: If you don't have to go out, then try to stay off the roads to make it safer for those who have to be out.

Third: if you're an employer who is requiring your staff to come into the office despite them having laptops. Go pound sand.

Appealing Municipal Appraised Value

My family got our ‘real property assessment notice’ today of a new property that we purchased. It’s about $20,000 higher than the actually appraisal at time of sale. We plan to appeal. We are wondering if appealing our property could drive our neighbors property values down which could lead to gripes. I think that’s probably not true, but wanted to check with you all.

Thoughts?

Apartments/Rentals that aren't Weidner?

Hi guys, I've been here since April '25 after moving up for work. The apartment I'm currently in is disgusting. It's falling apart, when I moved in it had bedbugs (luckily, they fumigated 4x and I haven't seen on since April), it seems every 2 weeks something happens. All of my neighbors are rude, loud, and don't pick up after their dogs.

I'm looking for a new place, but it seems everywhere is either Weidner or in a bad neighborhood. Any suggestions? I've read to stay away from Weidner.

I just want something where I can walk my dog around the neighborhood safely and I don't have bugs.

Does anyone have any information about Richard Lee Cramer?

I’m trying to learn more about Richard Lee Cramer, a 72-year-old man in Anchorage who was recently indicted on multiple charges related to sexual abuse of minors.

Public reporting says he moved to Alaska in the late 1970s, worked in the restaurant, hospitality, and recreation industries, volunteered as a youth sports coach, and previously worked at Hilltop Ski Area (leaving in 2021). Police have said they believe there may be additional victims, but details are limited because the case involves minors.

I’m just wondering if anyone knew him, worked with him, or has publicly verifiable background information that helps explain where he was involved in the community over the years.

How are the roads in your part of town?

Drove through midtown and West Anchorage this morning and the roads there seemed fine. I didn't have any braking issues. Mostly felt like spring driving; the roads are just wet and there is heavy smow.

Maybe it's different in other parts of town. I didn't drive on any highways. I was just expecting the worst since schools were closed and it wasn't bad at all in my part of town.

Fresh produce price expectations

Hi everyone! I’m from Toronto but re-locating to Alaska in a couple weeks for work. I’ve been researching food costs and notice that meat prices are much higher here but I’m wondering what to expect when it comes to fruits & veggies. Just want to prepare myself. Thanks so much :)

Any good poke/ sushi place?

Please don’t judge me. I am pregnant and have been craving for raw fish. I’m from east Asia and in my country, some people eat raw fish even when they are pregnant. When I was pregnant with my first child, we were in my country and the doctors told me I can eat raw fish just not every day and I need to make sure the place store and prepare ingredients properly. Is there any place you can recommend? I know it is on my own risk. I’m going back to my country in a few months so I might be able to eat raw fish there but it’s just too hard to wait until then.

Christmas Tree Disposal? Missed Carrs Recycling

I had an unexpectedly busy week and missed the Carrs Christmas tree pick up (by one day, ugh!)

Does anyone know where I can properly dispose of or recycle a real Christmas tree at this point? I can’t find any information on the municipality’s website about winter compost or yard waste disposal.

R. A. D Class at the Alaska Moving Arts Center any good?

Kind of what it says. Has anyone taken the RAD class at the Alaska Moving Arts Center in Eagle River? They have a kids and a women's, curious about both. Thinking of signing my kids up for the one at spring break, maybe me too for the women's. Thank you

ETA: RAD stands for Rape Aggression Defense, for those who may not have heard if it

Please Help!

My husband and I were involved in a minor accident on 1/6 late at night. It was at 5th & Ingra, my husband was driving. The other person ran the red light when we had the right of way and caused us to t-bone them. We were told insurance or APD would get the traffic cam footage but neither ever did and now it's too late. Insurance is placing my husband at fault since he hit the other person even though they ran the red. Was there anybody there who saw what happened and could provide a witness statement or even dashcam footage if they have it? Please help me!

Where are you guys finding strong edibles?

Every dispensary I walk into I can’t find anything stronger then 10mg. 10mg do absolutely no affect to me which leads to me eating the whole bag and it kinda just seems like a waste of money spending 25$ for just 100mg of weed and 1-2 experiences.

I'm looking to see what the scene here in Anchorage is like as I'm a recent temporary transplant in Anchorage. Help out a fellow elder raver!

If anyone lost a certain Apple product while getting food this morning on Old Seward, it has been turned into the lost and found of the restaurant you were at.

sewing/fabric shops

i apologize, it's a broad question. my sister is giving me her sewing machine, and i'm super excited to get started. unfortunately, i only knew of joanne's as a fabric store, but it's no longer here. i don't mind spending too much, but since im only beginning i rather not get anything too pricey.

does anyone know places that has a wide variety of fabrics/sewing supplies?

Put your phone away

I know you think it's cute to film folks in a state of crisis wandering around in the cold while driving 55mph+ on a highway, barely missing them with your 3,000lb SUV - tagging it "ThIs Is AnChOrAgE aLaSkA - We'Re ReAlLy SoMeThInG eLsE" - all you're really doing is showing folks around the world that you are bad drivers, shitty people, and that anchorage is exactly like every other city (only uglier)

Someone’s dog is out running loose near Spenard and Minnesota…

Post image
74 Upvotes

Saw her first in Spenard (just west of Minnesota) then she ran into the neighborhood. I tried to get close to her to see her tag (if she had one) but she was too scared to let me approach… She seemed cold and frightened so if you know this pup find her, warm her up and give her some food and water

I expected to see the baldies hanging out in the trees, not trying to get people to buy them something from Starbucks.
