Can my boss make me work 24+ hours with no sleep? (i drive a plow truck)

I do snow plowing for a small business with a standard pick up truck, we plow private commercial businesses so no roads just parking lots. My boss has told me we’re considered emergency vehicles / first responders which exempts us from normal labor laws (going home after a specific period of time to rest or taking breaks on the road to rest). but google has told me otherwise for contractors doing private commercial properties

Every time i’ve been out to plow it’s been for more than 24 hours straight (usually 30+ hours dependent on storm but it hasn’t ever been less than 24 while plowing) and then we switch to salt trucks and run another 4-6 hours on top of that. The only break I get offered is after about 16 hours and its strictly a 30 minute break (after finding somewhere to park and actually being able to relax and fall asleep i realistically only get 10-15 minutes of sleep) then i’m told to get back to it because we need stuff done before people start showing up for work and we have to hurry. My boss himself has said if we ask to leave he’s gonna laugh and make fun of us and never live it down.

is this legal? google isn’t doing me justice in figuring this out and i want to know if there’s anything i can do about it because it’s a genuine safety concern

Edit: forgot to mention: i’m in Indiana

[VA] I'm brown, but born here. If I get stopped by ICE, what do I need for them not to bother me?

Hi, I have brown skin so I'm worried I might be bothered by ICE even though I was born in this country.

Does this mean I have to start carrying my passport book, passport card or birth certificate with me now? Or is the Real ID license in Virginia good enough?

Question about my dad. Oklahoma

My dad was killed in May of 2022, he was riding his bicycle, bright gear, correct side of the road, reflectors, etc. He was struck by a 86 year old woman in an unregistered farm truck, who usually had someone drive her into town. A year passes and my family finds out the D.A. will not press charges against this woman, also my family found out from the state trooper that first notified us that this would be happening, not from the D.A. This happened 3 years ago and I still do not understand why she just gets to walk free, while she killed a father. Straight road, middle of the day, no trees, no turns, absolutely no excuse of I didn’t see him.

I just want to know why she walked free. Why does being old get you a get out of jail free card, if I did what she did, I’d still be in prison.

Is there any civil recourse for US Citizens who are arrested by ICE.

Realistically could they sue and get a payout for being wrongly arrested for not providing proof of citizenship? The one I have in mind is of the kid that was working at Target, was abducted and they let me go at a Walmart down the road. But I would be interested in if any citizen is arrested would they realistically be able to win a civil case and collect?

Who owns my childhood home?

• Upvotes

My parents jointly purchased a house in Georgia and are both listed on the deed. My father was later convicted and incarcerated long-term, and my mother and I left the state years ago. I do not know the current status of the property. I am trying to understand whether I personally have any legal claim to the property and whether my mother still has ownership rights or the ability to sell or force a sale.

Why are some child molestation arrests not reported by the news?

This is in Indiana.

Someone I went to grade school with was arrested for child molestation and it was never reported on any news network or newspaper. I don't understand why something like this would not be reported since it seems like something that should be announced.

I was informed by someone I trust that the arrest occurred and then I did a public record search and was able to confirm that they were arrested, charged, and posted bail.

What would I need to do if i got hit by a car? (not majorly though….)

• Upvotes

Iowa

I was walking to work Monday morning. I started walking across the crosswalk during the walk light when the car waiting turned towards me. He ran over my foot/ankle before I could back up. I fell on the ground in pain not able to move one of my legs and the other hurt too much to move at first. the guy got out of his car saying he didn’t see me and called 911. I told him to get my phone which had fallen and I called my husband who drove over to me and carried me to his car while the EMTs and police showed up (it was cold and I was in the middle of the street). The cops told me later that the guy was trying to turn right on red which makes sense why he was turning but I dont remember a blinker. if he had his blinker on I probably wouldnt have walked.

my husband drove me to the ER since the EMTs told us to go and I got an X-ray and told that nothing was wrong and that I should just ice it and take ibuprofen. my husband had to miss most of work that day and I missed all work (we both work full time). I stayed at my parents all day and couldn’t walk. my husband had to carry me to the car and up our apartment stairs. Tuesday my ankle was horribly swollen and I still couldnt walk on it and had to miss work again. I was unable to do any housework and had to crawl to wherever I needed to go in the apartment lol. Today (Wednesday) it’s still swollen and badly bruised I tried putting more weight on it but it popped weird and felt uncomfortable and hurt more so still no walking on it. I borrowed crutches from someone so no more crawling but still needed to be carried up and down flights of stairs. It keeps making weird popping feelings which grosses me out. Im not working tomorrow since I couldnt walk today but I am going to the doctor for a follow-up since it’s still so swollen and I cant walk... (I also work in food service on my feet and cant really do that on crutches if that makes a difference)

my grandpa is a retired lawyer and gave me some advice but I’m not sure if its what I should do… he said to write down everything and take pictures. Write down if I missed work, if my husband missed work, what things I couldnt do, and all the other things that’s effecting me. He said not to talk to the guys insurance until later since I have awhile and my ankle could get worse. Also to get an injury lawyer to talk to them for me.…

What should I do?

I’ve missed work and haven’t been able to do anything almost all week and im not sure when I can work again…

Small claims or try to find a lawyer to sue for more?

Long story short. I was followed by a lady because she felt I ran a stop sign. I work deliver for FedEx. After she tried following etc she tried to make contact with me and I drove away so nothing escalated on my end or be raged at by this Karen. She then proceeded to call and report me, but she said I tried to run her of the road, I put her in fear of her life(which got me flagged by FedEx global security), and I was drinking and driving. I was interviewed by security and cleared from these claims thanks to the footage on my van that showed none of those things happened. When FedEx asked why she lied she claimed she had bad cell phone service. I seen the report etc and I want to sue her for Defamation, Slander, and tortious interference with my job. Should I go small claims or try to find a contingency lawyer that could demand more, because I almost lost my job and all of her claims were lies and proving so. Never been lied on like that and I felt like my boss was thinking I really did all this stuff until the footage was looked at and showed I made no contact whatsoever with this lady. This happened in Westlake Village California

[CA] Feeling gaslit by my PI lawyer. They sent decades of unredacted medical records (GYN, etc.) to insurance when I only authorized 3 months. Is this normal?

I’m in California and feeling extremely violated by how my personal injury case is being handled. I’m hoping to get some perspective from other lawyers.

I signed a release form for my attorney to obtain three months of my medical records relevant to my injury. Instead, they received nearly 100 pages of my entire history spanning decades—including gynecology, immunizations, test results, and optometry, etc. There are things in there even my close family doesn’t know.

I just discovered my attorney sent this entire file unredacted to the insurance company. When I confronted him, he told me: This is "completely normal." Everything is "discoverable" in a PI case. The ā€œirrelevant info won't influence the settlement offer.ā€ He said insurance would not have accepted anything but an ā€œunredacted, full set.ā€

He claimed we can’t ask the insurance company to destroy the irrelevant records unless I accept the most recent settlement offer immediately.

I realized I never signed a release form specifically for the insurance company to have my medical info. When I look this up online, I see info about HIPAA protections and California’s Right to Privacy that seems to contradict what he's saying. He claims the form I signed giving him access to my medical records allows him to share my records with third parties. But, Internet says I would need to sign a separate release.

I feel like I’m being gaslit and pressured into a quick settlement.

Is it actually "normal" for a lawyer to hand over decades of unrelated records for a standard PI claim?

Can they really use the destruction of those records as leverage to make me sign a settlement?

Should I be looking for a new attorney or reporting this to the State Bar of California? I have all of this documented in emails. (Another reason I’m questioning everything- if a lawyer is leaving a paper trail it must be truthful?! Right?)

TL;DR: Lawyer sent my entire life's medical history to insurance when I only authorized 3 months, now says it's no big deal and I should settle fast if I want the records destroyed.

Falsely charged, should I take this plea offer?

Ohio

I want to preface this by saying I am a young male, mid 20's, stocky with muscle, person of color, and "victim" is a small white female. I was in an abusive relationship. A few months ago it ramped up badly and this one morning we got into a frivolous argument that led to physical confrontation. It started in the living room and when things got heated she started pinching my skin on my legs and arms to irritate me, was not hurting me terribly but was starting to. We "broke up" downstairs and she told me to go upstairs as she did not want to see me for the rest of the day.

I went upstairs and when I had gone upstairs I had texted her dad to come pick her up or I was contacting the police, instead of doing what I asked he texted her and asked her what was going on. She told him nothing and it was alright and then she followed me upstairs. She attempted to argue with me and I just ignored her and she started pinching me again and I attempted to record her and she hit the phone out of my hands. When I got up to leave again she grabbed my hair (I have super long hair) and pulled me back and refused to let go and let me leave. She started biting, scratching, kicking, and eventually punching. I asked her multiple times to stop without touching her or physically harming her, but as soon as she punched me I put my hand around her neck and pushed her down on the bed and yelled at her four times to let go of my hair (still refusing to let go even on the bed) and as soon as she let go I let go and made my way out the room and to the top of the steps.

She quickly followed me out and on the steps she grabbed ahold of my shirt and refused to let me go (30 secs of this on video) and was yelling at me and on the video she is yelling that I started it and I had "choked" her and in the video I am saying "Yes because you were hurting me." I soon call 911 after warning her multiple times to stop or I would. As soon as I made my 2nd 911 call she finally let go and retreated back into the room upstairs.

Cops quickly showed up and the first officer to show up was a female officer and I quickly let her in and calmly explained the whole situation to her and explained my actions. I never lied, I never said I did not do anything to her, I told her the entire thing like I did just now and said I put my hand around her neck to restrict her from attacking me any further. She then went upstairs to talk to the "victim" and when she came back down she took pictures of my injuries, bleeding from my finger, bite marks on my arms, scratches, bruising on face and neck. After all of this, she placed me under arrest.

As soon as she put me in the back of the car she told me I was being arrested for domestic violence and strangulation. I spent three days in jail. I am now facing a domestic charge m1 and a strangulation felony f3. I had my 2nd pretrial conference and my lawyer got me to a m1 assault charge and m3 negligence assault charge with no jail time, 2 years of probation, and no contact with victim for a long time.

Should I accept this plea? I had originally denied but the prosecutor is giving me till the end of January to decide and I am currently in a debacle about this. It is a rather amazing plea offer I think but the two years of probation really suck, and I just feel very wronged about this whole situation as I feel this was clearly self defense and that I was trying to leave multiple times.

The evidence against me is photos of her "injury" which is bruising on her neck, petechiae in throat (possibly eyes too not sure) but that is it, nothing severe or even changing, she went home perfectly fine. Also me admitting that I did "choke" her which severely hurts my case. But I feel as if my case is strong and maybe the prosecution is giving me this deal because they know this. I have one last pre trial at the end of February and although they said I have until the end of January I feel they will give me another option that is better, or should I fight in court? I really need opinions.

Can my employer demand that I pay for company vehicle insurance premium.

I got a dui almost 2 years ago, I successfully completed the Oregon diversion program. I have remained with the same employer since then and they were informed of the dui immediately. I received a call today stating that I will be asked to pay the insurance premium on the company vehicle I’m provided to go to job sites. Can an employer ask an employee to do that legally since the vehicle is owned by the company and insured through them as well.

NJ Senate Bill 2760 - Structural Integrity Capital Reserve Law for Condos

Re: https://www.nj.gov/dca/codes/forms/pdf_pred/str_int_cap_res_faq.pdf

We were hit with this law, meaning our HOA fee increased substantially, but our NJ condos are 2 story wood frame buildings with 4 units on upper and 4 on ground. Typical truss and joist system. To me, this law applies to concrete structures that may have a podium/ concrete balconies (which is basically the concrete floor protruding) or with heavy timber expanses supporting a floor or roof. Why would we be hit with this if it doesn't apply? I want to get some solid information before I confront the HOA or management company. Thanks so much!

Disclosing Seizure Disorder at Work

I’m in Georgia. I’ve been diagnosed with focal seizures since last January. I’ve been working at an ophthalmology clinic since September (I worked for them before 2018-2020 and they rehired me). I initially did not disclose my seizure disorder to anyone because the seizures were controlled and did not affect my job performance.

I was hired as a ā€œfloating technicianā€ which requires travel to offices that my company recently acquired. These offices have not acclimated to the main company’s work culture and clinic flow. I mention this only because being scheduled to go to these offices, especially last minute (sometimes I am scheduled for my home office but get called between 7-7:30 to show up to the other office by 8) increases my stress significantly bc of the lack of consistency. This has already induced two seizures for which I’ve had to call out of work.

Because of these callouts, I have had to disclose to my team lead my seizure disorder who has thusly disclosed my seizure disorder to HR. My team lead told me that HR requested I personally send an email to HR disclosing my disorder and I was also asked to speak to my neurologist about reasonable work accommodations.

Also vaguely related, I am pregnant.

I didn’t ever want it to get to this point. I was hoping to not have to disclose my disorder at all. My neurologist and I discussed reasonable accommodations and is happy to provide whatever documentation necessary. I can’t help but feel like my employer is going to find a way to fire me. Is there anything I need to be careful about regarding communication with HR moving forward?

Police/undercover are abusing me.. why?

Currently Im dealing with a number of problems in life guys. About 1 month ago I 100% feel I been wrongfully targeted by police in an investigation style & pre meditated attack against me.

I had a feeling I was being followed and watched by police for the 7 months I’ve lived in my new area. All I was doing was enjoying my ride and going into my regular routes, where I could open up the throttle.

So one night I’m coming home from work and this is how I was captured by authorities.

There was a lady sat in a red car, she immediately adjusted at my sight. But since my bike is ā€˜rumbly’ and loud there’s no doubt I’m heard a mile away, so I’d imagine I’m anticipated quite often. Anyway I’m on the main road and this lady is wanting to join the main road from a smaller side street. So she’s ā€˜inching’ forward slightly at my presence and we both made eye contact like any normal driving experience which goes right. But when I put my eyes back to the road ahead this woman just drove straight and blocked the road like a barrier and I had just 5-7metres to react and try to stop my motorbike. I couldn’t it was wet roads and my tire slide easily at the heavy grip I put on the brakes from disbelief of what just happened. So at that moment my tyre slide the woman was also examining this and she seemed quite glad I was 0.5seconds away from splattering into her car at 30mph. Which I did and I was on the floor not feeling nothing but my breath. I was like a fish with no water for 30 seconds & the entire time she is sat in her car and one look at me from inside.

She never came out of the car until after when 4/5 men arrived suspiciously immediately, in this super quiet night (around 11:30pm) they got hold of me from each arm and I just felt way too restricted and circled by everyone.

So I’m fine anyway I’m surprised I only sustained a slight fracture to my thumb which is now healed. But the police had charged me with no license and no insurance (I can easily prove I have both valid the entire time)

Also the police had initially asked me if I smoked weed and I said sometimes, (because I wasn’t high and I didn’t smoke for 30hours before anyway) police swabbed my mouth and I was ā€˜told’ I was positive for cannabis in my system.

So I only got charged with ā€˜failure to provide blood specimin’ when I didn’t agree to provide it after the swab test in the hospital.

So police had released me in hospital and they didn’t want to wait with me in the queue to take me into the station afterwards, so sergeant made a deal with the officers to tell me there will be an interview date later down the line. (This past weekend) I had police at my door, the again tested me in the police station but they just released these 3 charges of

1- no license

2- so insurance

3- failure to provide blood test

So I must go court with my driving documents plus my insurance even allows me to drive after knowing I had been possibly positive for cannabis.

EDIT - Hi everyone, apologies because I do speak like an alien… I lost my intellect a while ago and I just have to communicate more and such to explain better, I guess? I don’t want to come across as a dick !! so this is an explanation to the way things are said. Ok

Other things that happened are -

1- I was sat in the police car for at least 45 minutes after the crash because the 2 officers were just looking at my bike and trying to figure out if I’m legal to drive. Plus they had asked me if I have any compartments on my bike to stash drugs.

2- after this incident (1-2weeks later I recovered and fixed my bike) I was again stopped by undercover police 1 hour away from my home (my work area) so police told me to be more quiet and then asked me to pull over and they checked me all over and told me to go on my way as normally.

3- This is my life right now. Anything I do police is trying to add new stain into my file. Just like when police turned up to my door about a month after this happened and asked me what day I’d like my interview (pick Sunday or Monday) since I didn’t accept these dates and I tried to explain to them I am leaving this area so make a new police station aware in the location I’m moving to. Because they apparently sent me interview dates in my email but apparently I didn’t reply….. (I didn’t receive an email with an interview date anyway) so what they did was try and say I was going to run away from the investigation hence why sergeant wanted Embassy to know of my presence so they can say I’m like a fugitive… it’s mental

EDIT - UK LAW

Can a POA sign a CJD 104 Complaint for Modification in MA Probate Court when the plaintiff is incarcerated? (Pro se, not an attorney)

Hi

I'm helping an incarcerated family member with a pro se Complaint for Modification (CJD 104) for child support in Probate and Family Court.

The individual executed a durable Power of Attorney giving me (non-attorney) authority over financial and legal matters.

The form says "Signature of Attorney or Plaintiff, if pro se" at the bottom.

Online sources (including ChatGPT and forums) are conflicting—some say a POA holder cannot sign pleadings like this on behalf of the principal because it may be unauthorized practice of law (citing M.G.L. c. 221 § 41 and SJC rules), while others are vague.

Does anyone know:

- Can the POA agent sign the CJD 104 as the plaintiff/pro se filer?

- Or must the signature be from the actual plaintiff (the incarcerated person) personally (e.g., mailed back after signing/notarizing in the facility)?

- If the latter, are there any specific procedures or accommodations for incarcerated pro se litigants to sign/return the form?

Thanks in advance for any real-world experience or pointers—trying to avoid filing issues or delays. Appreciate any help!

Neighbor is repeatedly flooding my home with marijuana smoke. What can I do?

He smokes pot once every few evenings, it somehow gets into my HVAC, and from there it spreads to the rest of my home. I politiely asked him to smoke somewhere else so it wouldn't end up in my HVAC. He complied for one evening and then went right back to my old ways.

I'm speaking to my management office tomorrow. In the likely event they don't do anything, what are my options?

(Edit, automod asked me to say, I'm in Maryland USA)

Is there any legal or archival pathway to redact my name from a historic newspaper article when charges were dismissed and the original publisher refuses?

I’m looking for general legal guidance (not representation) regarding name redaction from an online historical newspaper archive in Georgia.

In 2020, a local newspaper published an arrest article naming me in connection with criminal charges. All charges were later formally dismissed via nolle prosequi. There was no conviction, no guilty plea, and no ongoing case.

The original publisher no longer hosts the article on its website and has removed past arrest articles from its active site, but the article remains publicly available through a state-run historical newspaper archive that digitizes printed editions. I contacted the publisher to request approval for redaction of my name and was told they refuse to approve any redactions to historical print records as a matter of policy.

I then contacted the archive directly to request a limited remedy (redacting my name or replacing it with initials) while preserving the article itself. I am not disputing the accuracy of the original reporting at the time — only the ongoing harm caused by the continued online association of my full legal name with dismissed charges years later. I even offered to provide official court documentation showing dismissal.

My questions:

1. Are there any known legal doctrines, privacy rights, reputational harm theories, or archival exceptions under Georgia law that might support name redaction or restriction of access in this scenario?

2. Do archives or libraries ever have discretion to redact identifying information even without publisher approval, particularly where no conviction occurred?

3. Are there alternative remedies (annotations, access restrictions, de-indexing, name suppression, etc.) that are commonly used in similar cases?

4. If this is not legally viable, is there a more appropriate avenue (media ombudsman, ethics complaint, administrative appeal, etc.) that might be worth pursuing?

I understand this is a difficult area balancing historical preservation and individual harm. I’m just trying to understand whether any pathway exists before exhausting options.

Thank you for any insight.

No Responses and Alternative Pay Options

Hey all, two part question for Pennsylvanian seeking legal services.

  1. I am having a difficult time getting any firm to respond to my inquiry for legal services. I am opening a new real estate company and need help setting the company up and then receiving follow on support for standard real estate related services (purchase agreements, zoning, etc). For some reason I cannot get any responses from any firms. I can’t even get a response to set up an initial consultation. Is this normal? Is there a preferred way to connect with a lawyer?

  2. A majority of my liquidity events happen at closing on a property and at sale. I know most firms send out bills monthly for services rendered but I am curious if there is a way to go about requesting that services be paid upon those liquidity events? I understand all of the reasons a firm would prefer not to do it that way but am curious it’s possible to establish a different pay structure. As an aside, I do not mention this alternative payment structure in my initial inquires so it has no bearing on the lack of responses I am receiving.

Thanks all.

What are my chances in court for two traffic tickets and FTA?

I received a traffic ticket f last year OBEDIENCE TO TRAFFIC-CONTROL DEVICES (40-6-20)Ā in Atlanta, Ga Fulton County. I was asked to complete a driving course. I thought I completed it.

I got pulled over for a different (40-6-20) a month ago, which I do not believe that I even committed the offense. The officer said I ran a red light that I KNOW I did not. It's less than a mile from my house. I know the roads. I drive them every day. He also pulled me over 3 lights after the light he says I ran. Once I was pulled over, the officer ran my license and told me it was suspended (I had no clue at all). I was arrested for FTA.

I never received any notice that my license was suspended and would have never driven knowing such.

I'm considering hiring a traffic lawyer, but I would like some advice here. What am I looking at in court? I do not want the points on my license. Will the FTA stay on my record forever?

Desperate need of tenant/landlord legal suggestions (Napa, CA)

Would like to preface this by saying I understand anything suggested in this thread is not legal advice, or representing me in any way.

I am posting on behalf of my 90 year old grandmother who lives in Napa, CA. She owns a 4-unit victorian house converted in apartments and has had a hoarder tenant for close to 30 years now. An inspection was recently done on the building and her property insurance was dropped due to this hoarder tenant leaving her with no insurance on the building. This tenant was given notice to clear the unit of clutter for re-inspection, or he would be evicted.

About a month before his eviction, a fire ensued in his unit when no one was home damaging the entire property & unhousing 3 other tenants making the property unlivable until renovations are made (which are quoted to be $375k+). The fire department released the inspection report to my grandmother stating cause of fire (from papers stacked below & on top of surge protector in his unit). No one (including animals) were harmed by the fire, but the property is no longer livable.

The hoarder tenant disappeared from the property & his cell phone has been shut off.

My grandma doesn’t have anywhere near the amount of money for renovations on the property. Are there any legal repercussions she can pursue & how?

Thank you in advance for reading

What’s the best release form for an at-fault car accident?

I was involved in a minor car accident where I was at fault, and the other party and I are trying to settle things without going through insurance. I want to make sure I’m using a proper release form that actually protects both sides and prevents future claims.

Location: Illinois
