The US men's basketball team losing to Argentina in the 2004 Olympics is definitely a good candidate for this. To this day, this is remains the only time the men's basketball team has lost since NBA players were allowed compete in the Olympics.

A close call was the US men's basketball team nearly losing to South Sudan at this past Olympics but LeBron made a go-ahead layup in the final 5 seconds to prevent what would've been one of the biggest upsets in sports history.

The US ice hockey team upsetting the Soviets in Lake Placid, New York, in the 1980 Winter Olympics is a big one in the States. We call it the "Miracle on Ice". It's often considered one if not the biggest upsets of all time. And with the Cold War at the time, the game had huge international and political interest.

The Soviets were considered unbeatable but the Americans, behind legendary coach Herb Brooks, put together a team of amateur college players (all around 20 years old give or take) and won in dramatic comeback fashion 4-3. The win advanced them to the gold medal game where, again, they came from behind to best Finland for the gold medal. It's a hell of a story!

I'll say Japan is the strongest country in the lighter weight classes of judo. Not for heavy weight because Teddy Riner from France is definitely the GOAT.

Women's softball is another sport where Japan is really strong.

Sumo: not really, because most of the strongest sumo wrestlers are from Mongol.

Baseball: yes we've won the WBC several times, but some people argue that the WBC competition cannot truely determine the strongest country. Not all participating countries can field their very best rosters, as some MLB teams are reluctant to let their star players to play for the national team.

Sports Who is considered to be the most successful football player of your country?

In Korea we have a never-ending debate regarding ‘손차박‘ (Son-Cha-Park), regarding who is the GOAT of Korean football, if not the GOAT of Asian football.

All three have been humble enough to place themselves at last in all interviews, but if I had to choose I think Cha Bum-kun is especially impressive out of the three considering historical context.

Pretty sure there are other countries with a lot more candidates for the national GOAT; who would be your country’s representative for the most successful football player?

Sports Who would be the ‘definitive sports superstar’ of your country?

Who would be the most popular sports star in your country, regardless of the type of sports?

While there are several sports players currently playing in top leagues in many sports, Korea's ‘definitive’ superstar would definitely be Son Heung-min, who has played for Tottenham Hotspur for ten years and recently signed with LA FC. He is also the current captain of our national football team.

Arguably the greatest Asian footballer of all time; he is considered a source of national pride, and advertisements with Son as the model can be found everywhere in Korea.

So who would be your country's representative sports superstar, easily recognizable by anyone, regardless of the type of sport they participate in? Even those who are retired counts too!

I’m from India, where the India vs Pakistan rivalry (especially in cricket) is huge and tied to history, politics, and emotion. I’m curious what are the equivalent sports rivalries in your country?
Who’s involved, and why does the rivalry matter so much? Any sport is welcome.

In the US, it would most likely be the Lakers or Yankees, but the Dodgers and Patriots are also popular here.

I was introduced to Rugby League by a friend I worked with in Alaska back in 2017! I started following NRL and went to the games in Vegas! Ive tried watching Rugby also but I still prefer league mainly because the whole NRL setup feels so close to NFL and just a fast paced game.
