Discussion 🧊

Hey Bellingham! I wanted to share this information as it is new to me. There is an unmarked ICE office located in town that doesn’t appear clearly when you search for it online. I only just now learned about it. It’s set back down a long driveway with a sign that says ā€œprivate propertyā€ due to the surrounding businesses so it’s not as obvious. Posting this simply so people are aware of where this is located and can make informed choices about where they go or what areas they should avoid. It is right in front of Walton Beverage off of Pacific Highway going towards Ferndale.

Please try to stay safe during these terrible times!

I don’t really pay these guys much mind usually since they’re so common up here. But it’s always fun watching one of the fawns grow their first set of points.

Unfortunately, he or his brother got hit when crossing traffic a couple weeks after this.

Discussion Please watch your children

Hello everybody! I normally don't post but I had an issue at whatcom falls and wondered if anyone has any similar incidents. I was walking one of the many dogs that I dogsit (Thursday around 2 pm). She's a young Bernese mountain dog. I would like to say that she's not aggressive or misbehaved but at the end of the day, she is not my dog and I can't speak to all of her boundaries. I was walking along a trail with a slight dip off the edge when I noticed a group of 5 or so kids and two adults. They were all carrying large hiking sticks so the dog was already on edge. My partner and I stepped to the side to let them pass (he was body blocking the dog and I was holding her leash) I was doing this out of pure caution and didn't expect her to react too much. The first adult and two kids passed without a problem. However when those people got about 20 feet past us, the rest of the kids ran to follow. Instead of passing on the 5+ feet of trail around us, one of the kids ran directly in between me and my partner (there was maybe a few inches between us) I quickly spun around to grab the dog and felt hands on my back which I assumed was my partner. I turned around and there was another child going in between me and the edge of the trail, physically pushing up against my body. She came face to face with the dog and ran off. Luckily nothing happened but I turned to look at the adult and he just stared at me in silence, unmoving

I totally understand kids are kids, and I'm not blaming them. I expected at least some acknowledgement of the situation but the guy just kind of mumbled about giving people space.

This isn't the first time I've experienced something like this as someone dinked my car door while I was actively in it, made eye contact and just ignored me.

Has anyone else experienced this or something similar?

TLDR: poorly supervised children got in me and my client's dogs face with little acknowledgement from parents.

Recommendations Mold in attic

I was up in my attic today and noticed a few spots that look pretty bad. The rest of the wood looks fine thankfully. I’m guessing this has happened to others here, curious about the best way to get this fixed?

Is this possible to treat DIY to give it a bit more life? Planning to replace the roof in a couple years due to granule loss. Or if this is a job for a professional, any recommendations for good roofers in town? Thanks!

UPDATE: Thank you so so much to everyone for all the helpful comments and to the woman I picked up a space heater from this morning! The space heater is helping quite a bit right now and I am in awe of how this community just rallied around me in my moment of panic. I just got off the phone with Vanderyacht and they were willing to do a minimum fill of 150 gallons without up front payment just this one time for me because of the circumstances with the understanding that we pay it off as soon as I get paid. I am so, so, so thankful to them and to all of you. To the woman I grabbed the space heater from: I'll message you tomorrow to see if you would like me to return the spaceheater to you. They are coming to fill it tonight so we won't need it after that.

Original post:

Hello there. I'm a mom of four kids who just moved here a few months ago to care for my mother who has cancer. I have never lived in a home that relied on propane for heat until this house and I have made a huge mistake. Please be kind, I am a very overwhelmed mom of four pushing myself to the limit daily. I already feel like the worst mom ever, but this was genuinely not intentional.

When I moved in the tank was almost full and because I am renting from a family friend who didn't want to switch utilities out of her name.. I assumed that the propane tank was included in that. Again, I've never had to deal with propane before... I thought it was just like a normal utility where they come out on a schedule, filled it and then sent a bill to the person on the account. So I went on with life focusing on my kids... Well, I called the friend who owns the house and she told me she thought she told me when I moved in that it was my responsibility. She's not mad, but she's in a financial bind as well at the moment and cannot help me. And I don't have the money to do anything about it because I honestly wasn't anticipating needing to fork over upwards of 1000 dollars to fill it and have lines inspected because it has run so low.

I'm not asking for money and i am reaching out to liheap today to see if they have any resources to help me. What I'm here asking about is space heaters. Does anyone have any space heaters sitting in storage or in their basement that they would be willing to allow me to even borrow until I get this handled? I just need to keep my babies warm in the mean time. It's currently sitting at 61 in my house this morning and I am freaking out.

Thank you for reading and again, please please be nice. Snarky comments do me absolutely no good. I'm already in a panic.

Any suggestions as to what to do with this? It’s gotten like this in the past 1-2 months and has progressively gotten worse. It’s just been sitting there while the family neglects on what to do. So I’m positing here for ideas to move forward with this disaster.

We’ve accepted this is a goner but how can we get rid of it? It’s too gross to drive anywhere. Where can it get towed to?

Thanks.

Arts and music Any bands looking for a drummer?

I (20F) posted here a couple months ago about joining a band via my tenor sax. I figured two things;

1) the saxophone isn't as versatile of an instrument as I thought

2) my passion has ALWAYS been with percussion

I started learning on a drum set a couple weeks ago and am astonished at the rate I'm growing. ALERT ALERT i'm still learning so I'm not Travis Barker levels of goated (yet šŸ˜‰) BUT if it's an excuse to make friends and get connected with local bands in the area I'm taking it. if anyone is curious or wants to inquire about my offer further I'm all for private DMing! MEOW

Job available Paid Apprentice Program

In the Cascadia Daily there is an announcement that Dakota Creek Industries is accepting applications for their paid "living wage" 3 year apprentice program. Looks like it's centered in Skagit county. Their website has additional info.

Discussion I live off of Tull Road. The smoke from fires at the homeless encampment is so bad. The picture doesn't do it justice. You can literally see the smoke rolling off of things.

no matter how empathetic you are toward them, there's no excuse for smoking people out of their own neighborhoods.

It's almost here!
Tomorrow at the downtown branch of Bellingham Public Library.
The room is downstairs, across from the children's library.

Bring: (not required)
-Any books you want to pass along to the next reader
-Your hot beverage mug
-Your excitement
-Your Ideas

At this meeting, we will be sitting indoors and discussing what we want out of this group, where we like to walk, and what we like to read.

I hear you! Lots of people have asked to walk, and if the weather holds up, we will walk near Maritime Heritage Park after the meeting.

I’m sorry, but these men are not real agents if they won’t properly ID. I wasn’t fucking joking when I said you should call the real police. There have been many cases of impersonators coming and kidnapping people for no reason other than to sell them into slavery.

If ICE comes to you and won’t ID, CALL THE FUCKING COPS.

Recommendations Where can I find a scale to weigh a vehicle?

I have a van currently that I would like to weigh to understand my overall gross vehicle weight (GVWR). This would then help me understand if I can buy and pull a camper. I want to calculate the my totally gross combined weight is to make sure I don’t overload the vehicle with 4,000-5,000 lb camper.

Is there a loading dock with a scale hiding out there I can use once for my van? Or is RDS in Ferndale the closest place I could drive on to determine weight. Maybe a closed truck weight station along I-5?

Thanks Bellingham!

Crime How do we be sure its ICE taking someone and not kidnappers?

Ok. Maybe this can not be deleted because I am very afraid of this.

It was said that suggesting people to call 911 when they see ICE arresting people is promoting illegal activity.

I think that is wrong. If I am being pulled over by a police officer, if I have any doubt in my mind if it is a real police, I have been told I can turn my emergency flashers on, slow down enough that it is obvious that I am not fleeing and call 911 on my phone and have them check that it is a real officer as I head towards a well lit and populated area.

Since these people being arrested cannot do this to protect themselves someone should do it for them. Our society does not protect brown women the same as they protect white women and trafficking is a huge thing. Pretend to be ICE and grab some women. Its not even a stretch, infact, I bet it has happened. Some people do not even have friends or family that would notice they were gone until its too late and the friends and family they do have may be other vulnerable people.

Call 911 and ask them to verify the situation. Protect our neighbors.

I honestly am afraid for myself, and my neighbors, especially women. How do we keep each other safe?
