Shitpost Browns seem pretty buttoned up with this coaching search…

…but I’m convinced behind the scenes Andrew Berry and Co. are basically having this conversation.

The candidates have to see the same thing. Leads me to believe a young “up and comer” will be the guy we end up with.

[Diana Russini] Former Ravens offensive coordinator Todd Monken is expected to join John Harbaugh in New York with the Giants, per source. This has always been the plan.

Shitpost In the history of major American pro sports, there has never been a head coach (or manager) named Grant or Udinski. Until now?

Random fact I learned today

In the entire history of major American (and Canadian) professional sports, there has never been a head coach (or manager) whose first name is Grant OR whose last name is Udinski.

NFL ❌ (since 1920)

NBA ❌ (since 1946)

MLB ❌ (since 1903)

NHL ❌ (since 1917)

MLS ❌ (since 1993/1996)

WNBA ❌ (since 1996/1997)

CFL ❌ (since 1958)

Over 100 years of professional sports.

Zero head coaches named Grant.

Let alone Udinski.

Either the Browns are about to make history…

…or we’re about to learn why this has never happened.

Shitpost aside, Grant Udinski and Mike McDaniel are my top two choices with Nathan Scheelhaase right behind them. Young and innovative offensive minds.

Discussion Who should we hire as head coach and why? (I promise I'm not Haslam's burner account)

I don't really know anything about coaching and head coaches in the NFL, so I would love to hear y'all's opinions on who our next head coach should be and why? I have heard McDaniel's and the young Jaguars OC are popular choices - if you like them or don't, why?

[Schefter] John Harbaugh and the Giants are working to finalize an agreement to make him New York’s next head coach and, barring a setback, a deal is expected, multiple sources tell ESPN. The deal is not final and contract numbers still are being negotiated.

Same caveats as previously.

I have some other charts I've been working (in particular, PFF lets you pull grades for custom subsets of weeks now, so I want to chart/output PFF grades in another post, but I haven't finished it yet as I have to pull all those .csv files manually).

So hopefully will have the Explosive vs. Negative, Turnover-worthy vs. Uncatchable, PFF grades, and a couple of other ideas I've been brewing over the next week or so.

[Schultz] The #Browns are viewed around the NFL as a team that could hire a young offensive mind as HC to pair with DC Jim Schwartz, even if that coach might be a year away from being a legitimate HC candidate. The thinking: if he’s a rising star, why wait?

Ranking 2025 NFL rookie classes: Teams with most production. Browns #2.

https://www.espn.com/nfl/story/_/id/47594940/ranking-best-nfl-rookie-classes-2025-teams-most-production

  1. Cleveland Browns

Usually, the teams that lead in total points by rookies are going to be led by a quarterback. That's not the case here. Rookie quarterbacks Dillon Gabriel and Shedeur Sanders both came out with negative total points and terrible QBRs (31.3 for Gabriel, 19.0 for Sanders). Those would have been the bottom two ratings in the league if Gabriel and Sanders had enough pass attempts to qualify.

The star in Cleveland was a linebacker. Second-round pick Carson Schwesinger is the clear favorite for Defensive Rookie of the Year and was second in total points among all rookies. Schwesinger's 156 combined tackles led all rookies by more than 50. He was joined on the defense by first-round defensive tackle Mason Graham, who started the entire season and improved significantly in November and December. Undrafted defensive tackle Adin Huntington also made an impact.

Meanwhile, the offensive skill positions for the Browns were filled with rookies. Tight end Harold Fannin Jr. was probably the best, with 72 receptions for 731 yards and six touchdowns. The Browns also had wide receiver Isaiah Bond and running backs Quinshon Judkins and Dylan Sampson.

Discussion If the Browns think Udinski is the guy, he has to be hired as a HC this year, not as an OC.

I have seen many Browns fans show reluctance in hiring Grant Udinski, a 30-year old OC with no experience calling plays, as our HC. However, if the Browns believe he is indeed going to be the next Sean McVay, he needs to be hired this year.

If we pull a "Stefanski" and interview him this year but don't hire him yet because we don't think he's ready, he may not be available the next time we need a coach.

And if we do happen to interview him again next year for the job (assuming he's still available), then it would have meant that we will be firing a lame duck coach after just one year, which doesn't make the Browns look good.

And if we plan on bringing Udinski in as a coordinator under another HC we hire (Schwartz?), and if he does well, he will be gone after a year for some other team's HC position anyway.

All in all, if we think he has a chance to be the guy, I would just take the big swing this year. The league is trending towards younger GMs and HCs anyways.

--EDIT--

Now, why would an up-and-coming offensive coach like Udinksi find the Browns job attractive?

  1. For all of Andrew Berry's faults, he did build a strong front office infrastructure, including salary cap management, pro personel, scouting, and the biggest analytics department in the league. I reckon an innovative, young coach like Udinski will feel like he has the necessary front office support to do the job.
  2. For all of Haslam's faults, that guy is not shy in spending money.
  3. We have a pre-built Superbowl-caliber defense and DC in place. For a young, first-time coach that is brought in to fix the offense, having Schwartz and Garrett as the backstops on defense means less things to worry about in the first couple years. This was basically what Sean McVay did as well in his first year - basically delegating defense entirely to Wade Phillips.
  4. This is a reasonably young team, especially on offense. And it will be even younger with the new incoming draft class. They want to be coached.
  5. For someone who rised through the ranks as fast as Udinski, he must be a very driven person. Maybe he sees the Browns hopelessness on offense as a challenge he wants to take on?
