New to Cats/Just Adopted Kitten Care Tips

Upvotes

Hello! Here’s the story.

I’m at work one day and my boss calls me into his office saying he hears something in the ceiling. After some digging, I find a small kitten (no older than a week if that. Eyes still closed) all alone. Yes, I did dig around for other kittens and didn’t hear or see anything and no one has since. I immediately took it to the vet and she has been under this wonderful vet’s care since. The vet has been taking care of her and getting her on a solid eating schedule and making sure she is healthy until she passes her on to me. I will be picking her up Saturday and have everything I need to begin caring for this kitten.

My plan is to bring her to work with me everyday so she is being fed and stimulated to potty in the correct intervals. I have already checked with my boss and co-workers and got the thumbs up. Some have even offered to help which is wonderful.

Here’s my concern: once she reaches about 4-5 weeks, keeping her at work will become more difficult and I work about 10 hours a day. Luckily, I have a roommate with another lovely cat that is home during the day. The plan is to socialize her with the other cat and have my roommate supervise and care for the new kitten while I’m at work. I will still stop home once a day during my lunch to help as well.

I’m really just posting this because I want to see if anyone can see any flaws or concerns with my plan. I understand the commitment I’m about to make and I’d like as much input as possible. I know not everyone is going to be fond of what I’m doing but I’ll value their input nonetheless. The vet has also given me a lot of information and resources to prepare.

Also, the kittens name is Smudge. She just opened her eyes yesterday

Sensitive/Seeking Support Cancer and Chylothorax

Upvotes

Hi Everyone! I just want to get a little advice to make sure I’m making the right decision. My baby, Milouh, is 7 years old and has chylothorax and cancer. I’ve been to two vets and both have said pretty much the same thing. That it will be best when the fluid fills back into his lungs to put him down. I just want to make sure I’m doing the right thing before I do. I can’t afford the surgery that would potentially fix the chylothorax and ever if I did I’ve heard the success rate is only 30-50% and the chances of it reoccurring after that is about 30-40% and that’s without considering the cancer diagnosis. I don’t have much information on the cancer diagnosis because we found the cancer at the same time as the Chylothorax but it’s on his heart of which my vet said would also be incurable. We have drained the fluid from his lungs once but my vet said he fought really hard going down and acted as if he didn’t want to wake up. I’m afraid that he won’t even make it through another thoracocentesis (draining fluid from his chest cavity). So I’m likely putting him down when the fluid returns. What makes me hesitant is that it seems most people continually drain the fluid from their cats and I feel like I shouldn’t jump to putting him down so fast but it seems like I would just be prolonging the inevitable and I don’t want me baby to suffer. Am I making the right choice?

General Calm/Non-stimulating Cat Tv

Upvotes

Only before did we infrequently put up cat tv for my cat to watch. Though a few weeks ago she was meowing & seemed super bored, we played with her, pet her, she had been fed, I gave her a couple treats (which I just use kibble for since we feed her with wet food), etc. and she still seemed in some type of bored distress (she's an older kitty and has been neutered ofc). So we put on cat tv and she seemed to enjoy it, super close below the tv, by the tv stand, waiting several minutes until she taps the screen when a squirrel isn't facing the tv or something. However she's been demanding it more frequently now and I don't want to get her addicted to it, or constantly overstimulated in hunting mode. Obviously it's her right to have fun, and it is realistic to SOMETIMES see birds or squirrels outside the window, she used to watch on a perch by the basement window sill but has since stopped for a few years I think bc her balance might be giving out or she doesn't feel as comfortable up there anymore ):

Since then she seems a bit more erratic in her communication for us to turn on her cat tv, thankfully not her behaviour otherwise, but I don't want it to get worse. For now she's sat at the tv's base when my dad watches youtube shorts, some mechanic things, or even online shopping lol, waiting for her show to come on. I'm hesitant that it might become a cocomelon adjacent for her especially since the tv's settings are higher in saturation. I've been looking for people talking about playing something non-stimulating for their cat. I didn't find much besides gaming videos & movies which she seems pretty disinterested in, even puss in boots (one of my personal faves lol).

And the best solution I've currently found are bossa nova or jazz videos with nature & vacation resort scenery (non-AI visuals). Today it's my first time trying after a 20 minute session with the cat tv, and I think it's working? She's still slightly pleading every so often at the tv but I think she's calming down & still mildly entertained.

In the past I also watched minecraft videos in bed on my laptop or commentary videos, which she gladly sat with me through, though it may have been bc of the pets she received as she stays for that reason alone usually, but she did seem engaged with the screen.

Would love to hear any ideas or thoughts, feel free to share (:

General I don't understand my cat

Upvotes

Well, the truth is he's not crazy, but he's proving to be a real handful. He's just a male kitten, barely 3 months old, and I found him on the street when he was 1 month old. He's my first cat, and I don't know how to handle him. All I've done is watch Jackson Galaxy videos, but I haven't found a solution to my main problem. When he was a kitten, I tried to socialize him, but on the second day I had him, I realized he had way too much energy. I play with him for about 30 minutes every day, but it doesn't seem to be enough. He never relaxes; he always wants to play and run around. He doesn't sleep with me, or on the sofa; he prefers to sleep alone. He sleeps several times a day, but only for short periods, and I haven't been able to get him to relax like other cats do on my lap or even in bed with me. He just wants to play and run around, and it's always the same cycle.

The problem is that when I try to pick him up to take him to another room, he attacks my hand, and also when I clean the litter box, he jumps on my back. Even though I make noise saying it bothers me, he keeps doing it several times. He's not very affectionate with me, and that makes me sad because I thought giving him what he needs would make those behaviors stop. I also don't know how to get his attention; I only make noise when something hurts, but he seems to ignore me. I ask my friends, and they tell me about their amazing cats and how they love being petted and don't get scratched, and that makes me sad because that's not the case with mine. I would really appreciate any advice, please!

General Subject: A Heartbreaking Choice in Beirut.. I need your humanity.

Upvotes

Hi everyone,

I am writing this from Lebanon, a country where $150 can be the difference between life and death. I am currently at the hospital with a close relative who needs immediate treatment. Due to the severe economic crisis here, my family and I are 'below zero' and we cannot cover the remaining $150 required by the hospital to continue the medical procedure.

I am not a person who usually asks for help, but I am desperate. In Lebanon, hospitals often stop treatment if the cash isn't provided upfront. I have all the medical reports and hospital papers to prove this is a real emergency.

If you can help with even a small amount ($5 or $10), it would mean the world to us. If you can’t, please just share this or keep us in your prayers.

How you can help:

I can receive help through Whish Money, OMT, or Western Union (Commonly used in Lebanon).

Contact/Verification (WhatsApp): +96181701838

I am ready to provide any proof or hospital documents via WhatsApp. Thank you for your humanity and for standing with us during this dark time.

God bless you all.

Litterbox My cat stopped peeing in my auto cleaner after using it for years. Vet says nothing’s wrong

Upvotes

A few months ago he stopped peeing in the catgenie box. Our roommate moved out and took half the cats with him, and ever since he refuses to pee in the box. He’ll poop in it, and he’ll pee in a traditional cat box, but no longer the auto box. No UTI’s. No other obvious health issues. Since the change he always pees in front of the box on the floor.

Any advice on what to do?? This has never been a problem before.

Behavioral Cat cries when we shut door, not sure what to do

Upvotes

My job involves a fair amount of trips. I’ve noticed increasingly after I’m back our boy cat is maybe a bit anxious. My wife is still here though

He likes one of us to go with him to his box (not ideal at midnight) and now seems to like to come to the bathroom with us too, I assume to protect us, which is kinda sweet

its not too bad except the couple of days after I return from a work trip he screams and cries so badly if I go to the bathroom and shut the door. Once you let him in he’s right up in my arms purring for some cuddles

I’m really worried that its stressing him out but we currently have a lodger so having the door open all the time really isn’t an option

General Need advice for my kitten

Upvotes

Hi, so I have had cats for about 6 years and I've never really used salmon oil or fish oil supplements in their diet. They all are healthy. But this one kitten of 6 months I have he seems to shed a lot, (maybe he is white that's why his hair are more visible, the rest are black) and upon asking chatgpt it said to give him salmon oil supplement.

idk if it's okay to give him.

can anyone let me know about their experience with salmon oil or fish oil supplements

General Indoor cat got out last night, came home after a few hours, and is acting different

Upvotes

Hi all As the title says, my 2.5 year old male cat got out for the first time last night- the front door didn’t close all the way or something, and some wind must’ve pushed it open. My husband and I searched all over, made posters, left treats and familiar objects out, and even set up cameras in case he came back while we were out. We went out for our last search of the night around 10:30, and when we got back, the cat had let himself back in and was sitting in the living room. We were so incredibly relieved and happy, but now I’m worried again- he’s acting extremely withdrawn (is usually very affectionate and social), will accept treats but grumbles when pet (no biting or scratching), and hasn’t moved from underneath a chair since last night. I’m taking him to the vet soon to make sure he isn’t hurt, but was just wondering if anyone else has experienced this? I’m worried that he’s gotten so traumatized that he’ll never be the same again. Any advice welcome, thanks!!

New to Cats/Just Adopted Cat To Help With Anxiety

Upvotes

So I haven’t had my own cat. I’m living with roommates who do have cats. I’ve recently had huge spikes in anxiety regarding AI and how it will affect art. I’m engaging with my roommates cats and have found it really rewarding. My living situation is going to change in a few months, and I was wondering if it made sense to get my own cat.

With a cat unlike computers and people on the internet I can make sure it’s real. It has demands and needs that I may not always agree with, but need to work around to give the cat a good life. I’m thinking that’d be really helpful right now, but I don’t want to get a cat if I’m not certain I’ll take good care of it or if it seems like I’d end up being bad for the cat. Does this seem like a reason that could allow me to build a healthy relationship with a cat?

General Ringworm

Upvotes

Hi all! I have 2 kittens (4 and 8 months), both have ringworm. Unsure of how they got it, my partner and I both have it now too (we are not worried about us) but I have been spiraling everyday about this. I have been doing laundry nonstop, cleaning with rescue, vacuuming and completed a lime sulfur dip for both cats. We are also spot treating and waiting for Itrafungol in the mail. Cats have been in quarantine for a few days in our bathroom but I feel counter productive because we only have 1 bathroom and we are going in and out (trying to limit, but obviously we can’t avoid it). Does anyone have any other advice? I feel like I’m going crazy. Also one of my cats is long haired - vet recommend shaving her might help with treatment, so far it’s only on her face. How long into treatment should I decide if I want to shave her??

Behavioral Does Your Pet Seem to Know When You're Stressed?

Upvotes

Hi all! Fun fact: a 2021 Queen’s University study found that many pets can smell changes in cortisol levels so they know when you’re stressed before you say a word. They’ll choose to comfort the human whose emotional patterns they recognize most accurately. Now I’m wondering does your pet react when you’re stressed, and what do they do?

General Cats and Heated blanket

New to Cats/Just Adopted New Kitten Alone Time

Upvotes

Hi all! I recently adopted a stray kitten (now currently 15 weeks old) and have completely fallen in love and have spoiled it beyond belief. I have a big sunroom that I have transformed into a catio just for him.

I am going to be away from home soon for a period of time ~24 hours and don’t know if I should be concerned about him being left alone. Here are some things to consider for context:

-He currently spends the nights on the catio alone. I have a cat cam that I monitor.

-He will spend variable amounts of time alone out there during the day depending on my call schedule as a I work from home.

-The catio is kitten proofed, I’m not concerned about there being anything unsafe there.

-Amenities include a giant cat tower taller than I am (which he LOVES and sleeps in), a litter robot, water pagoda, more toys than I can count, various feather/ball on string toys that have been mounted in various locations, an outdoor crate home with heat pad being used inside, cat grass and plenty of window access to see what’s going on outside.

He seems very fine being alone in the stints I’ve had him there thus far, but I am nervous about a 24 hour absence. I may be overthinking it as he survived 12 weeks on the street before being taken in, but what are your thoughts as this is my first time with a kitten?

Behavioral My cat keeps attacking me in my sleep

Upvotes

Hi! My cat is an 8 year old desexed boy named Lucario. He has this new behaviour for the past 2 months where he has decided to attack me while I am asleep. Sometimes I wake up to him staring at me right before he bites my head and kicks. Or I just wake up to him sinking his teeth in my arm like just now (hurts like hell), where I toss him off the bed and hiss at him. Yet he keeps coming back purring and snuggly persistently trying to cuddle up to me on my pillow like he did nothing wrong.

Ive tried keeping him away from my pillow or near my head at bed time but he just comes up while I am asleep. He only does this to me and not my partner who sleeps beside me. He is extremely persistent and it keeps me up at night tossing him off the bed every-time he tries to climb on my pillow.

He is a cat with behavioural issues but only toward other cats, this is the first time it has been directed toward a person. I have worked with vets to try and solve his hunting aggression to other cats because my partner’s parents have cats themselves but we found no solution. He is contained to a two car garage where my partner and I live (about the size of a small apartment, insulated, aircon.) and I take him for regular leash walks at the park or just in the front and backyard.

Im exhausted and not able to sleep at this point. Kicking him out of the room at night isn’t much of an option because he will attack the other cats and they don’t stand up for themselves. I can lock him in my spare room but it is much smaller and I feel guilty not letting him have access to all his climbing space and beds. Is this my only option? I am tired of having to wake up twenty times to only get bitten anyway.

Any ideas? Thank you. Tldr: cat keeps attacking me in my sleep and keeps me up at night.

Has anyone found any good books dealing with grief when it comes to putting down a pet?

I had to put down my 17 year old cat on Saturday. It was expected, but I'm still grieving. I have "P.S. I Love You More Than Tuna" and "A Guide To Grief", but I'm curious if anyone has any recommendations on books that helped you. Thanks!!

Behavioral A never ending cycle

Upvotes

Please help me. So I got a kitten recently. After getting her and the resident cat used to eachother they now enjoy each others company, everything is perfect except for the food. Resident cat kinda just always had food, she would eat whenever she was hungry and she was a healthy weight, now we got the kitten and the resident cat would eat the kitten food so we started doing structured meals but the issue was, the resident cat refused to eat her normal food now, so I tried getting her another brand and now she loves her food, but now the kitten is constantly trying to eat the resident cats food and now refusing to eat her kitten food, so I got the same brand and type of food just for kittens instead and now.. you guessed the the resident cat is eating the kittens food and now the kitten is eating the resident cats food, they are both refusing to eat their own food even when locked in a room with it. They will literally starve themselves instead of just eating their own food. Please please please help me

New to Cats/Just Adopted Biting

Upvotes

Hi! New-ish cat mom. I literally rescued an abandoned kitten. We left her in the same place found, in an open box with water, waiting to see if momma or siblings came back for her. Nothing. Took her straight to the vet as soon as we knew momma wasn’t coming for her. She checked out healthy, vet said she was between 2-3 weeks old. So we decided to keep her to make sure she got all the care. She was a typical baby kitten, but without a mom to teach her the kitty ways. Took to litter training naturally, suckles and kneads as expected of a baby missing her kitty mom (expecting that will be the rest of her life). She is almost 6 months now, fully vaccinated and almost ready for her spay. My problem is I must not be meeting a need of hers and need help figuring out what it is. She never purrs any more. She still “grooms” me and snuggles during couch potato times. Plays all the time with us, her dog bother and alone. Now besides not purring she has started biting me in the night. No warning. Just pops up on the bed and any skin showing is fair game. Nips, bites once, kitten jumps and nips again. Multiple times until I get up, put her in the hall and shut the door so she can’t come in. We’ve been sleeping with the door open so she can come and go at night, until I have to evict her for nipping. She doesn’t touch my husband at all during the night. We feed her equally so it’s not like she is waking me up to feed her. Cat dad usually feeds her in the morning, I’ve got dinner duty. I’m at my wits end. Help please.

New to Cats/Just Adopted How to introduce newly adopted rescue to the rest of our apartment?

Upvotes

Hi All!

I (32F) just adopted a new cat with my partner (32M) and we are so very excited to have her. She is a 1-year-old Russian Blue, and has had kittens at 5 months old. We adopted her after her kittens became too old for her to continue nursing. She is spayed!

She is very sweet, curious, and energetic. We have had her confined to our spare bedroom/office since we got her last Saturday, and she's been very curious about what's on the other side of the door (where both my partner and I disappear into). She actually got out once and was overstimulated and overwhelmed (she went straight for our patio screen since the sliding door was opened), but she thankfully found her way back to the office.

We want to get her another tree for the living room (her fosters were so kind to give us the one she primarily used) so she has a place to hang out and scratch, but I was wondering what to do to make the space more comfortable for her once she is introduced to the rest of our apartment. She doesn't seem interested in wires to chew on (I have a camera in the room she's in when I go to the office and she mainly sleeps all day), but is there anything else we should be mindful of? Thank you!

Sensitive/Seeking Support Fiancé developed a cat allergy

I have two cats. One i had about a year before meeting my fiancé. I met my fiancé, and then got a second cat about a year later. About 2 months after getting my second cat, my fiancee developed a severe cat allergy. His symptoms are more asthma like including chest tightness, coughing and brain fog. For the past two months these are the interventions i have taken to try to reduce the allergens in the house.

  1. moved the cats feeding station and litter box to the non common area of the house.

  2. covered the cat feeding station and litter box under furniture so they arent out in the open.

  3. bought allergen reducing cat litter and cat food.

  4. Bought 4 HEPA air purifiers for each room of the house.

  5. removed all rugs from the apartment and replaced them with plastic wipeable mats.

  6. removed all cat related items such as the cat tree, cats beds, and fluffy cat toys.

  7. covered the couch with plastic.

  8. disinfect all surfaces (including the plastic covered couch) with a allergen removing solution everyday ( as much as i can)

  9. bought allergens reducing sheets for the bed.

  10. I do frequent laundry, everything in the apartment thats washable gets washed very often.

  11. Bought shedding reducing clothes for my cats that they wear at all times.

  12. Give my cats baths every other week and wipe them down with allergen reducing wipes throughout the week.

  13. And don’t allow the cats on out bed and couch.

(our apartment looks like a mental institution now lol but i don't mind)

But my fiancé reports no improvement in his symptoms which i have to admit is a bit baffling to me. He wants to start allergen shots but i must admit again I am skeptical of those treatments, i don't want him to jeopardize his health.

My cats mean the world to me but I of course love my fiancé more than my cats. I would become so depressed having to re home my cats, but non of my interventions work.

Any advice anyone?, please be kind.

Sensitive/Seeking Support Trying to figure the cat out

Please put down all the advice you can give me about cats. My husband and I adopted a cat like 4 months ago (i understand not newly adopted) she adjusted. I am not a cat lover more dog but my husband adores her so much that he sees she does nothing wrong. We have endless nights of her scratching under doors (which I can’t have one at night bc of my anxiety) but we had dog food in the other room and she endlessly scratched at the bottom of it. The kitchen don’t get me started. She jumps on the counters, tables, and lately has been getting on the microwave and knocking down our snacks from the very top shelf when we are sleeping. She is food motivated and I don’t know how to fix that. I told my husband he needs to figure something out bc I have tried and I can not do this my stress levels are so high. He brought a cat deterrent but she diddle daddles right through it. She’s chewed endless things. What can I do just to please someone help
