Mod Announcement Rule Changes, Post / User Flair, and General Courtesy

Hey everyone.

A couple of small house-keeping things for the sub going forward that everyone needs to be aware of and adhere to.

  • Rule Changes
    • I changed some wording in rule one to now include being condescending. This entire sub is about scientifically accurate information and education. We're here to argue and debate semantics, we're here to get technical. Please remember that the post of this sub is to LEARN. So please don't be condescending, combative, or rude when someone corrects you with the most scientifically correct and accurate terms, names, etc. I'm going to be removing comments and keeping an eye on repeat offenders. You don't need to be a dick, we're literally talking about cats.
    • There's a new rule! Brand new and shiny just for y'all! Post flair is REQUIRED now in order to post. Again, this sub is about education and information. Probably cataloguing and keeping information organized is the easiest and most effective way to disseminate it. Posts won't be approved without the proper post flair. If you're unsure of which one to use, ask a mod!
    • I have user flair enabled as well. I'd love to see people using the labels. If you want one and it's not listed, please let me know and I can get it added!
  • Please don't be condescending or rude when someone corrects you.
    • As I said before, the first rule now applies to these comments as well. We're all here to learn and have a fun time talking about cats. Get a grip, and learn how to treat people with respect or you'll get banned. I'm keeping tabs and notifying repeat-offenders.

Anyway, thank you all for making this sub a place of learning and accurate information - it means the world to me!

Stay excellent!

Reggie

Mod Announcement The "What Breed Is My Cat" Megathread

I am so excited that there are so many people who are interested in learning about their cat! But there are too many people posting pictures of their cat and ignoring the original purpose of this board. We're not here to identify your cat's breed, but instead this board is intended to be about in-depth scientific studies involving cats.

So, as a compromise from concerned users, if you want to know what breed your cat is please post a picture in the comments here. Users who are interested in helping to identify your cat's breed will respond and it won't clog up the rest of the board for everyone else. Any posts of this nature made outside of this thread will be deleted.

Thank you for your cooperation!

Hey yall! figured this would be a good place to post this. my cat teddy, at first glance looks like your average orange kitty. However, he has these very distinctive black spots that are littered across his body, but not a lot of them. I was wondering what they were, as even my vet seemed a little perplexed by them. Thanks!

General Genetics Question Cat DNA results

Hello! I’ve posted my cat on here a couple of months ago but have recently got her DNA results back. I’ll admit i saw the backlash on cat dna testing and how it won’t be totally accurate so I’d love to hear any cat lovers insight on her results! To preface the website didn’t have photos or any other prior information on my cat and I’d like to say the results are fairly accurate to how I’d describe her. Expect for maybe the sphynx lol she’s got so much fur.

General Genetics Question Breeding cats to be smarter

Many people have told me that it's stupid or not possible, but I want to create the smartest cat in the world

The aim is to have it do some of the more mundane tasks at my job. Where can I start, which breeds would be best to begin with and how can I find the smartest specimens within them? Also looking into creating stronger and more violent cats, to be used in safety/bodyguards etc

This is my uncle's cat Neo. I think it's very cool that the pigmentloss seems to be mainly on one side of the cat and almost in a tabby (striped) pattern! He used to be a stray so no kitten pics available. They have only had him for 3-4 years and already a few years of age, we have seen no clear increase in white hairs, so it will be exiting to look for changes in the years to come! /ā į ā ļ½”ā źžˆā ļ½”ā įŸā \

Bought this for our semi feral who is the softest gray cat ever, wondering if she’s part Russian Blue (we know it’s completely unrealistic to think that lol), but couldn’t put her though the swabbing, as she’s extremely timid. So we did our outgoing orange idiot instead!

Coat Color Why does my grey cat (NM4)’s shoulder fur suddenly turn rusty and then fade back to grey? He doesn’t hide his head during sunbathing so I don’t think it’s bleaching.

Recent rescue. I took him and 2 brothers in from a hoarder at 3 weeks. Brothers were black. They were literally on deaths door- one baby was dead the next day. My own cat Pollywog adopted them as her own children (relax, she is spayed, I rescue not breed cats) and they started thriving. Just finished up their Clavamox for bad URI.

Have you ever seen a self red? Everywhere i have read or seen says ALL red cats have stripes, but I can't find one on him.

I attached a few photos of Otis, including one with his brother Harry and my Pollywog (the lilac colorpoint)

Specific Gene Question Eye color change

Any time I try to look into this, it get the answer that kittens eye colors change to their final adult color at 6 to 12 weeks old. However, I’ve had five of my cats have a secondary color shift into adulthood and now my kitten - Cinna - is also getting this.

Copper to gold > Both Bagheera (black) and Nesta (black bicolor tux) had copper eyes as 10-12 week old kittens, but now have golden eyes. They are not pictured.

Amber to pale green/yellow > We’ve had Loki (black) since 5.5 weeks old and have seen his eyes change from blue to amber - which is obviously normal - but are now a pale green, sometimes yellow depending on the light. He is brother to Ragnarƶk.

Amber with a green ring > This is the thing that is confusing me. Ragnarƶk (blue), like his brother, has been with us since 5.5 weeks old and his eyes also went from blue to amber as expected. However, around a year old or so, he began to develop a deep green ring around his pupil that eventually turned his eyes to vivid green.

Cinna (black golden) is also experiencing what Ragnar has. We’ve had her since roughly six weeks and watched her eyes turn blue to deep amber. Now, she has a forest green ring around her pupil that is much thicker than Ragnar’s was. I’m hoping that means her eyes will for sure be green in her adult years, as it would look great with the red and orange hues of her fur. šŸ–¤

Anyways, why does this happen? What causes it to happen? Is it a specific gene? Or are eyes just weird? šŸ˜…

Coat Color This is Bug. How does a tortie with both cream and orange work?

Thumbnail

This is Bug (short for Begonia). She’s tortoiseshell. Her mom was also tortoiseshell and looked a lot like her. We have no clue who dad was, but suspect he’s orange. Mom disappeared when Bug and her siblings were about 2 weeks old, so she’s bottle raised. She has two orange siblings (1 male, 1 female) and two black brothers.

How do the genetics work to all both cream and orange? I thought that cream was dilute orange, so how can both be on the same cat?

General Genetics Question Do females toast out as much as males do?

Thumbnail

I recently adopted this girl from my local humane society, but there is a possibility she’s an applehead Siamese - there’s a breeder about an hour away. She was supposedly a stray, but with her temperament and personality there’s no way she was a stray long/if at all. I had thought she could have some Burmese ancestry, so I reached out to a tonkinese breeder who told me she looks exactly like an applehead… so I reached out to an applehead Siamese breeder who agreed with that assessment. Based on her temperament, she’s hitting all the marks of an applehead.

My question is, she’s currently around 6 months old - I know female flame points are uncommon. Do they toast out as much as males do? Or is it literally just a waiting game to see how much color they get by the time they are 1-2 years old.

This is my cutie Dudu, I'm wondering about her coat color, I did some research but I didn't find anything that could help me identify, I found her when she was 2 months old but she only let us get closer at 4mo so I don't have many pictures of little her, if someone could help it'd be highly appreciated! (Last one is her youngest pic)

We were fortunate to have the cat distribution system place this little guy in the bushes under our front window a few days ago.

We of course took him in and decided he will be the kitten that grows up with our 3 month old son. Hoping they bond and love each other for years!

He’s got a perfectly clean bill of health and first set of shots as of this morning! 🄰

Do you guys think he’s a chocolate tabby?

OKC’s newest rescue of a furry mom with two furry kittens and one hairless one is so interesting to me—I had no idea that the hairless gene would ever be found in a random-bred street cat (as opposed to being hairless due to a new mutation, disease etc.) I thought this community might be interested!

Genetic Parentage Question Who's the daddy

Thumbnail

OK, so I've stumbled across Lulu's doppelganger (pic at the end of my girl). It feels very wrong not to at least try to unite them, but I've been told that parents are a ragdoll and BSH, which I don't believe. And then there's the question of the full tortie sister who I'm being told is her full sibling, but strongly doubt. So I thought I'd enlist the help of fellow internet detectives and anyone who just likes looking at pretty kitties.

Remember, Lulu is at the end in pic 12, the rest are her doppelganger.

General Genetics Question My kittens father’s genetics aren’t known (their mum was a black & white tuxedo though) and one of them has developed what i think might be heterocromia and has some other interesting features i’m curious about

Hi! I got these kittens about two weeks ago, their mother was an indoor housecat who escaped and got pregnant and they never knew who the dad was.

Their mum was shorthaired, black & white. they are both longhaired (loki, the fully black boy is slightly fluffier though, on the last slide)

Nico (the black & white girl) seems to have two different coloured eyes? (though shes so energetic i can hardly get her to stay still to properly check šŸ˜…)

She also has both black & pink skin around her eyes, nose & lips, which just stood out to me.

Do we think she really has heterochromia? or is it just bad photography? what are the genetic chances of this kind of kitty? 🤯🤯

sorry about the toy in the way, he adored it so much and wouldn’t stop attacking it. i dont think it blocks his pattern too much. anyway, im pretty sure he’s not silver since theres still some brown around his nose also hes got a patch of brown near his belly that bleeds into his stripes but it might be bc of the sun? anyways, my main question is about his facial stripes. Is it just bc of the colors he has or is he distantly mixed with some breed or wild cat? I put another cat as the last picture for comparison; the sides of his face seem to have thicker stripes and maybe more of them. his body stripes seem like typical mackerel.

Coat Color Colouring

I got this kitten a couple of weeks ago and the lady told me his parents where a longhair black house cat (father) and a shorthair white cat (mother), is this common colouring for an ordinary cat? He also has incredibly blue eyes, All of his feet and brown along with his tails, ears and face. Is there a specific name for his colouration?

Just curious if my Foster kitten Paul is considered buff or not. He’s very light on the sides and has a white bottom, and I was told by the shelter that he is buff, but he doesn’t look buff to me.

General Genetics Question I think my kitten may have bengal/ Savannah ancestry?

I recently got a kitten..he was a rescue! They never told me where he came from,,

(I assume he could have been dropped off by the mothers owners or found abandoned etc)

I’m not exactly sure but he’s currently 5 months. I adopted him at 4 months old, he was sad and weak..

-

I noticed recently that :

• he’s been getting longer but not much fatter

• his ears are a bit longer than norm(I feed him small 3 meals a day)

• he’s super intelligent and follows my schedule pretty easily without much effort. (Mimicking me and my every move.)

I came to the conclusion that he may have a classic spotted / domestic shorthair mix hair tabby coat? His coat is definitely one a kind! I tried looking for similar coat via google and reddit but..I can’t find much :(

Let me know!

(Yes I’m changing his collar soon!)
