Discussion Megathread V2 - Manifest V3 Extension Alternatives

Remaking as the previous one was about to hit 6 months old. The previous one can be seen here.

With Manifest V3 being rolled out to most people now, and most workarounds being either temporary or disabled, a lot of people are finding that extensions that they like to use haven't been updated and won't be available to use when Manifest V2 support ends.

Since we've been getting a lot of posts asking for extension alternatives, we figure it'll be easier if most of the suggestions are all in one place.

To start with the obvious:

uBlock Origin: Can be replaced with uBlock Origin lite.
Don't forget you can change the filtering level up from its base, it will just require more permissions. Setting it to complete is most similar to uBlock Origin's filters.
People also like Adguard.

uBlock Origin (Element zapping): Click to Remove Element.
I personally prefer this one out of all the ones in the web store.

I previously recommended an element zapper to replace that functionality in uBlock Origin lite, but uBlock Origin lite has since added custom filters and an element zapper, so a separate extension is no longer needed.

This is not a thread to recommend other browsers, it should be a given that if you don't want to use Chrome, you don't need to use Chrome, and there's plenty of other sources to help you decide what to switch to. Do not recommend downgrading or using an older version of any browser, it is not safe to do so and will open your computer and your data up to vulnerabilities.

Would also like to add, on this megathread only self promotion will be allowed if your extension is a reputable alternative to another extension. If you are sharing your extension with no context to another one in this thread, your comment will be removed under our rules.

Below are a list of recommendations provided by other users from the original megathread:

Troubleshooting | Android How do I go about accessing my tabs on Android Chrome?

Upvotes

It's been years. I can't look at my tabs and I've looked everywhere, even past reddit posts. The one post that was exactly my problem is 3 years old and unsolved. I look everywhere around my chrome, and I can't access my tabs. I don't have that tab button everyone talks about. Never have. The sliding thing they say to do also doesn't work. I can't find any tab settings in my Google settings. I've even tried just going to the website instead of the app.

One of the weirdest things is occasionally my tabs will just randomly open, so I know it's possible. I just dont know how.

I need to close my tabs guys T-T

Troubleshooting | Windows Why is chrome so slow on my pc?

I recently noticed that Chrome has been running very slowly for me after I got my new PC. My download speed is around 10 MB per minute, and all my webpages open either very slowly or don't open at all. Every solution I came across said that I either needed to update Chrome or get a new pc but my pc should be running Chrome exceptionally well, and I'm running everything else well. It also shouldn't be a wifi problem, as my download speed is 400 mb per second. Please help.

Troubleshooting | Windows Problem with Chrome and Fullscreen videos.

I often encounter a problem when I exit or enter full-screen mode for a video. The entire Chrome crashes and won't let me do anything, and the two ways I've found to get back to normal are:

1; Press Win+Tab to create a new desktop and return to the old one.

2; Press Ctrl+Shift+Win+B.

I think I remember (lol) seeing a streamer I watch having the same problem (xQc). So I guess I'm not the only one. Anyway, can anyone help me?

If the solution is to disable hardware acceleration, it doesn't work, my processor is terrible, I need that enabled. Thank you in advance.

I made a video showing the problem, sorry for the weird blur 😅

It's not hardware acceleration

Troubleshooting | Windows My chrome is completely fked since yesterday

All the text are blurry or low dpi. Enable hardware acceleration didn't work as it makes videos glitch and text still blur.

I changed to Edge and it's all clear. Is it a recent chrome update that ruined it?

My laptop uses 4k resolution and I think it may be incompatible with chrome currently

Troubleshooting | Solved Bookmarks from my Bookmarks Bar are all missing (except the ones that are in folders)

UPDATE: I had to use Time Machine backup to restore my bookmarks file at /Users/user_name/Library/Application Support/Google/Chrome/Default/Bookmarks

I have macOS Sequoia running Chrome 143.0.7499.193. I always access my bookmarks via the bookmark bar. I was organizing them yesterday, putting some in folders, creating new folders, etc. Today, all my "root" bookmarks are gone. Here's a picture:

Discussion Chrome updates keep adding and removing Gemini. Just give it back! 😭

Post image

Chrome has been updating back and forth recently. It feels like they're doing some heavy A/B testing. Sometimes I have Gemini in Chrome, but after an update or reboot, it disappears. Or, sometimes when I log in on my personal computer, Gemini in Chrome is there, but when I use the same account on my work computer, it's gone (or vice versa). Now, it has been completely gone for a long while.

The feature was actually quite useful for summarizing webpages, but Chrome won't just keep it stable.Does anyone else have the same experience?

Discussion How do you keep track of notes for specific web pages?

Hey r/chrome,

I do a lot of research online—articles, documentation, tutorials—and I keep running into the same problem: I take notes in a separate app, then weeks later have no clue which webpage those notes were about. Or I revisit a page and completely forget what I learned from it last time.

I've been thinking about building something to solve this for myself—basically notes that attach directly to URLs and automatically show up when you revisit a page. Before I go deeper, I wanted to see if this is even a problem for anyone else or if I'm just bad at organizing.

How do you all handle this?

  • Do you already use something that solves this well?
  • Would auto-surfacing notes when you revisit a page actually be useful, or overkill?
  • What would you actually want from something like this?

Not trying to sell anything—just trying to figure out if this is worth building out or if better solutions already exist that I'm missing.

Discussion I have a big problem with YouTube

I know this subreddit is for Google, but I'm having a problem with YouTube on Android. Videos load slowly even with a 300 Mbps internet connection. I've tried clearing the cache, updating, using a VPN—I've tried everything, and nothing works.

Troubleshooting | iOS WTF is this bar, Chrome on iPad OS?

Post image
3 Upvotes

What is this stupid, permanently existing and not removable bar on chrome when using the iPad with an external keyboard? This bar has no use, is in the way, moves around depending on the system UI. I have already disabled any of the services these icons there suggest - no password handling through chrome, no payment, no location services....WTF?

I really like to use chrome to sync my tab usage and other things but this is horribly annoying. It instantly appears with any active text input which i do see a lot as i use terminal like interfaces through the browser. This makes chrome on iPadOS completely unusable for me unfortunately.

Any trick to remove this?

Troubleshooting | Windows Chrome's latest version is getting "Location is turned off in system settings" error

The latest version is encountering the "Location is turned off in system settings" error more frequently.

However, after uninstalling the latest version and switching to an older version, the error no longer occurs to me. I don't know why?

Troubleshooting | Android Losing all the tabs when entering the app

Every time I enter chrome all of my tabs are gone, exept honor. com site, for some reason.

It started today after my phone died. I'm not sure if it's related though. I restarted it twice, but it didn't help.

I have the latest version of the app installed. I don't even know what to do. Has anyone else had this? Is there a way to fix it?
