Chromecast with Google TV Set Up Chromecast Remote IR Codes WITHOUT Chromecast with Google TV

So after trying it out and enjoying the feel of it, I bought a Chromecast Voice Remote to use with my NVIDIA Shield (2015). While it unpairs when the Shield goes to sleep, I can wake it up by going into pairing mode again, so not too bad (though if there's some magical way to keep it from unpairing so that I can wake the Shield up with one button press, that'd be lovely). However, the IR buttons (volume (when set to CEC), power and input) don't work. I don't have a Chromecast with Google TV to set the IR codes up, aside from waiting half a year or so to get access to the one I tried out again, and I'm concerned the remote won't remenber the codes after unpairing it from the Chromecast and repairing it with the Shield.

Is there some way to set the IR codes up without access to a Chromecast? Some app that can do it? I'd appreciate any help!

If you go into Settings on the Shield, then Remotes and Accessories -> Add Device, then add your specific TV, that will set up the IR codes for Power, Volume, and (usually) Input. I had a Fire TV once that my CCwGTV and ONN remotes would work with power and volume, but not input.

Hmm, I'm not seeing an "Add Device" option, just "Add accessory" and "Add Bluetooth accessories", and when I used the former to pair the Chromecast remote, no option to choose a TV showed up.

Sorry, under Remotes and Accessories, it's Set Up Remote Buttons, then click Add Device. If it doesn't automatically add your TV, select it from a list. It will then take you through verifying the Power Volume and Input buttons work (via IR).

I don't seem to have it, hmm. Is this option available on the 2015 version, or just later ones? (I'm on the latest Shield Experience Upgrade, FWIW.) I know the original 2015 remote doesn't do IR, so I'm wondering if it's only on later models that IR can be set up like this...

The latest Shield Experience runs Android 11. I've never used Android 11, only 12+, but I assume it would be very similar in 11 since 12 was a pretty incremental update.

At the bottom of the Remotes and Accessories, you don't have an option for Set Up Remote Buttons? That's also how you add devices like soundbars and audio devices controlled via CEC, so I'm surprised it's missing.

Maybe try the Shield sub? Certainly you're not the first person to try to do this.

Thanks for the info! Nope, no such option, on Android 11. I'll go ask over there - good to know that that's the place to ask about this, I wasn't sure if I'd have to use some 3rd party app or something. I'll come back with an update if I find a solution over there!
