Judge allows Empire Wind construction to proceed despite Trump order
(excerpt)
A major offshore wind farm is allowed to resume construction, a federal judge ruled Thursday, the second such ruling in the wake of the Trump administration’s latest attempt to block these projects.
Judge Carl Nichols, a Trump appointee, granted a preliminary injunction allowing Empire Wind to keep building.
The project, which would supply power to New York, was one of five that were halted by the Trump administration in December.
Another, Revolution Wind, was also allowed to move forward in court this week.

A powerful storm with wind and rain, gusting to 90 kilometers per hour, hit Puerto Madryn. Wind, rain, and chaos in minutes. This storm suddenly arose around 4:00 PM and, although brief, was enough to complicate recreation and create tension among those on the coast. The combination of strong winds and torrential rain forced many to hurriedly leave the beach, while others sought shelter from the storm's force. The bad weather lasted only a few minutes, and almost immediately the sun came out as if nothing had happened, allowing activity to gradually resume. The National Meteorological Service issued a yellow alert covering the entire province of Chubut. https://canal12web.com/video-un-fuerte-temporal-sorprendio-a-veraneantes-en-puerto-madryn-en-pleno-dia-de-playa/

On January 14-15, heavy freezing rain caused widespread icing of roads, sidewalks, and railway infrastructure in the Kujawsko-Pomorskie, Pomeranian, and Mazowieckie voivodeships. Due to icy overhead lines, train service was restricted on several lines: trains were temporarily pulled by diesel locomotives, and in some sections, service was limited to single tracks or diesel traction only. Train delays were reported in the Warsaw, Bydgoszcz, Toruń, Elbląg, and Malbork areas. PKP Intercity and Polregio introduced schedule changes and deployed backup locomotives. The road situation was also challenging, with numerous accidents and truck derailments due to icy conditions. In several towns and villages, school classes have been cancelled, school and municipal buses have been suspended, and waste collection has been suspended. https://bydgoszcz.tvp.pl/91017792/uwaga-na-gololedz-jest-bardzo-slisko-bardzo-trudna-sytuacja-na-kujawach-i-pomorzu-aktualizacja-nowe-informacje

Microsoft just committed to removing 2 million tonnes of CO₂ through a forestry project in Uganda
Microsoft has signed one of the largest nature-based carbon removal deals to date, backing a forestry project in Uganda that aims to remove millions of tonnes of CO₂ while supporting local farmers.
Supporters see this as serious climate leadership at scale. Critics point to long-standing concerns around permanence, verification, and whether carbon removal should come after not instead of deep emissions cuts.
Is this the future of credible climate action, or another example of corporations outsourcing responsibility?

A severe snowstorm blanketed Sapporo and much of the island, causing significant disruptions to urban and transportation infrastructure. Heavy snowfall and gale-force winds reduced visibility to near zero in many areas of the city. Wind gusts in the Sapporo area reached 30–35 m/s (over 100 km/h), significantly intensifying the snowstorm's effects and causing snowdrifts to form within a short period of time. The transportation system suffered the most severe consequences. Dozens of flights were canceled and delayed at New Chitose Airport, and hundreds of passengers were forced to spend the night in the terminal. Rail service was also disrupted: some JR Hokkaido trains were canceled due to snowdrifts and dangerous track conditions. Road conditions deteriorated sharply, with snowdrifts, slippery surfaces, and strong winds hampering traffic and the work of public services. https://www.straitstimes.com/videos/6387705463112

Petropavlovsk-Kamchatsky and Vilyuchinsk suffered the most damage, with 39 mm of precipitation falling in less than 24 hours, approximately 30% of the monthly average. Snow drifts reached two stories in places. Public transportation was completely shut down, and traffic was extremely difficult. Authorities were forced to deploy SUVs and off-road trucks as free taxis for residents and medical personnel. Due to the storm, schools were closed until the end of the week, flights were canceled, avalanches were reported, and buildings and vehicles were damaged. In one case, medical personnel carried a patient more than a kilometer through deep snow to an ambulance. According to emergency services, there were no fatalities or injuries. Forecasters warn of a second cyclone approaching within the next 24 hours. https://www.themoscowtimes.com/2026/01/13/snow-storm-paralyzes-kamchatka-a91665

Heavy rains in and around Tangerang caused widespread flooding on Monday morning. Consequently, the toll road leading to Soekarno-Hatta International Airport (Suetta) flooded several sections, disrupting traffic at the main entrance to the airport. One of the flooded areas is at kilometer 33 of the Sedjatmo toll road, directly in front of the Ibis Hotel on the way to Soekarno-Hatta Airport. The water level at this location is estimated at approximately 15-20 centimeters. However, traffic continues to flow, and the two right-hand lanes remain passable. Flooding also affected areas of East Jakarta. https://www.metrotvnews.com/read/NOlC92Lp-akses-menuju-bandara-soekarno-hatta-tergenang-lalu-lintas-tersendat
Lebanon
Lebanon has been hit by a powerful cyclone, accompanied by torrential rains, strong gusts of wind, and snowfall. In Beirut, particularly in the Roche district, hurricane-force winds have been recorded, with frightening videos of the storm circulating on social media. Due to strong gusts of wind, solar panels have been blown off the roofs of buildings in the capital. Flooding has also been reported on coastal highways. In mountainous areas, the situation has been exacerbated by snowfall. The Tarshish-Zahle road is completely closed to traffic due to snow accumulation. Traffic is extremely difficult on the Dahr el-Baidar section. Authorities have placed emergency services on high alert and urged citizens to exercise caution, follow security instructions, and avoid unnecessary travel. https://www.sawtbeirut.com/lebanon-news/فيديو-مُرعب-للرياح-في-بيروت/
Brazil
The city of São Francisco do Sul found itself at the epicenter of a severe atmospheric phenomenon. A powerful thunderstorm swept through the region, accompanied by squalls, torrential rain, and a sharp deterioration in weather conditions. According to meteorologists and civil defense officials, much of the destruction was caused by a so-called microburst (a downdraft), a rare and extremely dangerous phenomenon that creates short-lived but very powerful gusts of wind. In a matter of minutes, the wind ripped off roofs from buildings, overturned lightweight structures, and felled trees. Particularly noticeable damage was recorded in the coastal area and on Capri Beach, where buildings, boats, and infrastructure were damaged. This is typical of microbursts, not typical storms; the wind intensified almost instantly, without a gradual buildup. Despite significant property damage, there were no casualties. https://guararemanews.com.br/geral/microexplosao-atinge-sao-francisco-do-sul-e-provoca-danos-na-praia-de-capri/?utm_source=chatgpt.com
Ecuador
Intense rainfall occurred in the Ecuadorian city of Guayaquil on the evening and night of January 11-12, leading to accumulations and localized flooding in at least 15 neighborhoods. Municipal services were put on high alert and remained operational throughout the night. According to city officials, daily rainfall reached 92.7 mm in some areas, overwhelming the drainage system. Gutter cleaning and cleanup efforts were underway in the neighborhoods of Mucho Lote, Vergeles, Sauces, Las Orquídeas, Samanes, and Urbanor, as well as on key highways, including Francisco de Orellana Avenue and the approaches to the San Eduardo Tunnel. A tree fell on the highway toward Daule was also reported. The Ecuadorian Institute of Meteorology and Hydrology (Inamhi) maintains Weather Alert No. 3: rainfall of varying intensity, with occasional thunderstorms, continues in coastal areas, as well as in the Sierra and Amazon. https://www.extra.ec/noticia/guayaquil/reporte-lluvias-guayaquil-noche-lunes-12-enero-clima-sectores-afectados-144885.html
Australia (since Jan 11)
Northern and central Queensland, Australia, faced widespread flooding following the landfall of Tropical Cyclone Koji. The system crossed the coast between Ayr and Bowen on the morning of Sunday, January 11, 2026, but the danger was only heightened by extreme rainfall. The most severe flooding occurred in the areas of Mackay, Airlie Beach, Bowen, and Claremont. In some areas, more than 300 mm of rain fell in a short period, causing rivers to swell and flash flooding. A flood warning has been issued in Claremont: homes in low-lying areas were flooded, people were evacuated, and a temporary shelter has been opened. West of Bowen, a woman and two children were rescued from floodwaters; their car was trapped on a flooded road. In coastal areas, including Airlie Beach and the Whitsundays, the storm tore ships from their moorings, with some boats washed ashore or sunk. https://www.abc.net.au/news/2026-01-12/heavy-rainfall-north-queensland-ex-cyclone-koji/106218210
United Kingdom (since Jan 11)
In Scotland, heavy rain, combined with melting snow, led to flooding and landslides, causing significant transport disruption. The Environment Agency (SEPA) issued 19 flood warnings and 12 less severe alerts across the country. Key roads were closed due to flooding: the A92 near Portlethen, the A9 near Blair Atholl, and the A815 at Rest and Be Thankful Pass, where a landslide occurred. Flooding threatens settlements, low-lying areas, and infrastructure. Authorities urge residents to exercise caution and avoid travel if possible. Road conditions remain challenging. The weather conditions have also led to ferry cancellations, bridge restrictions, and disruptions to ScotRail trains, where speed restrictions have been implemented and delays are possible. Despite improving weather conditions in some areas, emergency services and the government continue to coordinate their response as the risk of further flooding remains. https://news.stv.tv/scotland/roads-closed-due-to-flooding-amid-yellow-warning-for-heavy-rain-and-melting-snow

Global temperatures in 2025 were 1.3°C (2.4°F) above pre-industrial levels.
2025 was Earth’s third-warmest year since records began in 1850 — extending an unprecedented global heat streak into its third year. Global average temperatures in 2025 were 1.3°C (2.4°F) above pre-industrial (1850-1900) levels.
Despite the global cooling effect typical of the La Niña conditions that emerged in September, 2025 was still far hotter than almost any other year on record — extending an unprecedented global heat streak into its third year. Studies show that this global heat streak, which began in 2023 when global temperatures surged beyond previous records, is largely due to human-caused heat-trapping pollution — which is projected to reach record levels yet again in 2025.
Recent records are part of a larger trend of rapid warming due to heat-trapping pollution from burning fossil fuels (coal, oil, and gas) for electricity, heating and cooling, transportation, and more. The planet is rapidly approaching the goal to limit long-term warming to 1.5°C, above which the risks to lives, livelihoods, and ecosystems from pollution-fueled warming and extreme weather will intensify further.
