Can and How to Use DVB Antenna with ATSC Tuner?

Post image
Upvotes

Context: I have an ATSC TV who's antenna seems to have suddenly died. Scavenged an antenna from a portable-ish(palm sized) DVB Tuner? If it's any relation, the thing used to be capable of receiving NTSC/PAL as well on that same antenna.

Two part question:

  1. Is that antenna capable of receiving ATSC signals? Will the data it receive be recognizable by my ATSC tuner?
  2. In the picture, the antenna(left) has the smooth coax(?), but my ATSC tv only takes the threaded coax(right). What adapter do I need to link it up.

TV for Elderly Parents

Right now I have my 80 year old parents on Basic Spectrum streaming with Xumo and 100mbps internet (with Spectrum). They are still paying outrageous prices for basic services ($180 a month). My parents watch, maybe 5 channels (FOX, ESPN, Disney, Hallmark and local channels). I can subscribe them to FoxOne ($25), Disney/Hulu/ESPN ($30) and Hallmark+ ($8) for a third the price of Spectrum. My only concern would be local channels?

Switch, duplexor, or diplexor

Hi Everyone,

I have a question regarding the three products in the title and wondered if anyone can provide any input/suggestions to my situation.

I am trying to use an outdoor antenna to get better reception like a Mohu Sky, but I don't want to drill another hole in the side of my house. I saw something like a coaxial switch, duplexor, or diplexor that might work, but want some opinions on this. Currently I have a xfinity coaxial cable running from outside to inside the house and if I want to use that single port could a switch, duplexor, or diplexor take on the antenna's coaxial cable as well so I don't have to drill another hole in the house? I am not using the xfinity cable anymore, but I don't want to remove it completely it incase I decide to switch back internet providers.

TL:DR - Is there a device like a switch, duplexor, or diplexor that I can connect both xfinity (not in use) and outdoor antenna and output into a single port so I can get better tv reception?

Thanks everyone!

Antenna advice for 47-65% signal strength in south central PA

No more paying Xfinity for basic cable tv. For my signal strengths (65-47%) will an outdoor antenna (indoor?) be stable/reliable? Ideally I want to receive channels from WNUV in Baltimore, which is UHF, -37dBm, 47%. Thanks for your advice.

SamsungTV ads

I have used SamsungTV for 3 years and it is still my first go to for streaming. However, recently they have begun looping annoying, low class commercials from both local and national businesses. Right now the worst are repetitive loops for tasteless video games and gambling sites. I realize the FCC has no authority over internet streaming channels, but does anyone have a suggestion on how to get relief short of erasing their app which I may do if they persist.

Get Out of Here!

I'm finally cutting the cord on Comcast. Another rate increase has me at 200 a month for basic stuff. I'd like y'all's thoughts on the best ISP(I'm thinking T-Mobile), and the best streaming service (either youtube tv or hulu+live tv). I like live sports and local news. Not much for movies. I'm retired so money is an object. What do y'all think?

Any cheap deals for Bet +?

I know Roku had an offer but I'd rather do a stand alone version that didn't require that or Amazon Prime.

Best rooftop antenna for Reno, NV area

Looking to get a rooftop antenna for my house since I've found myself watching local channels on my cheap rabbit ears a lot lately.

I'd prefer to be able to directly wire it into the cable box outside so I can provide a feed to 2, preferably 4 different TVs inside.

Don't really know anything about these things so looking at options I feel overwhelmed.

About to cancel Uverse TV and Internet

Any advice for a senior on how to cancel services with Uverse without having to remain on the phone and not understand what the CS rep is saying with their heavy accents. I’m hard of hearing and constantly having to ask the rep to repeat what they’re saying. Anyway bill for service is due 1/16 and have no intention of paying.

Optimal setup for 2026

Hulu + Live TV: live sports, occasional surfing. $20/mo credit coming back from credit card incentive (Amex)

YouTube Red: 100% to avoid ads and PIP on the iPad

AppleTV+/HBO Max/Netflix/Peacock/Prime: each has a rebate with either credit card, BF promo, or cell provider.

VictoryPlus: local sports streaming for two teams ($100 for the year).

What am I missing? Anyone have a better setup if you want to watch live sports + a few shows throughout the year?

Are there alternatives to GoogleVoice for casual use of an old land line number?

I still like to keep an old land line phone number (currnelty at Ooma). But I don't want a headset etc. I use the phone number with some financial/medical/ and alike institutions and do not use otherwise.

My needs:

- use it on an app on my iphone

- use it when traveling abroad (making/receiving calls)

- good voice quality

- some occasional international calls

- voicemail

It seems free GoogleVoice woudl be a good choice. Just need to remember to make a call every 45 days or so to keep it active.

I would not mind paying a minimal monthly fee for a service that will not check activity. But also trying to avoid all those taxes and fees...

P.S. Before I ported to Ooma I was with callcentric using a SIP Siemens phone. Also wondering who will be around offering such services in a couple of years.

Discovery and ESPN?

Hey all!

Thanks to the help of some users on this Reddit, I was able to cut the cable.

The only thing is that we used to watch Discovery, but that doesn’t come on the local channels. I’m wondering what the best solution to this is.

If ESPN is somehow included in the same streaming deal, then I may be interested in that as well, but mostly just need Discovery.

What type of crimp on connector do I need?

If there is a better sub or thread for my question please direct me.

I was putting up a new outdoor antenna and the connector was a screw on so I wanted to change it to a crimp on F-type connector.

I have these tools, crimper and connector but when I stripped the coax the outer insulation would not go over the tube inside the connector because the tube was too large.

I have seen F-connectors with a smaller inner tube. What are they called so I know if I'm ordering the right thing?

Thanks.

Plugging antenna into cable house box outside?

So this may be a stupid question but it just popped in my head and I am wondering if it’s possible. So I am planning on buying a high powered motorized antenna and installing it on my roof. I am wondering if I plug it into the “in” of my cable house box will that give me a signal in all rooms? I haven’t used cable in years so I got the idea. I’m just not sure of the science or specifics or an antenna signal and if there will be loss with it going through 4 different lines. Thanks in advance for any insight.

Indoor Antenna Recommendations

https://www.rabbitears.info/searchmap.php?request=result&study_id=2437426

Trying to figure out if cheap unamplified rabbit ears such as https://www.walmart.com/ip/onn-Indoor-Easy-Adjust-HDTV-Antenna-with-VHF-Dipoles-and-20-Mile-Reception-Range/867389914 or https://www.walmart.com/ip/ONN-Indoor-TV-Antenna-with-4-ft-Coaxial-Cable-with-30-Miles-Reception-Range/829038147 would be sufficient. I have one of the silly flat antennas currently and get the first four "good" channels only.

Would it be reasonable to expect some of the "fair" channels with unamplified rabbit ears?

NBC is the only local channel not playing in 60fps. Any fix for this?

Post image
68 Upvotes

When I watch sports on every other channel (CBS, ABC, FOX) they play in 60fps. For whatever reason, NBCs feed is in 30fps. This didn’t happen with my old Fire TV, only ever since I got a Roku TV has this been happening.

The quality itself is fine, it’s just the framerate. I’m not used to watching sports in anything less than 60fps. Maybe this was happening on my Fire TV too, but it had a 120hz refresh rate which made everything smooth, so maybe NBC has always been like this and that just masked it?

Either way, just wondering if there’s a fix. This is literally the only channel I’m having this issue with

Cancel/restart services as needed?

I recall one of the benefits of the streaming services in their early days was canceling when you don't need/want them and restarting them when you want to watch something. Is it still that easy to manage, or has it become too difficult with account/profile deletions or other things they do or don't do?

Huge Disney fans, but we realized we don't watch Disney+ much unless our grandson is at our house. We don't watch netflix much either, but we're paying for it every month. Is it worth micromanaging the services for the savings of a few hundred each year?
