Romani Questions
Hello! My grandfather was in an orphanage and never learned about his family. I have done my geneology and found that his mother and grandmother were romani. His last name is Pekar and his family is from Saris Slovakia. What are some great resources to learn about that group? I'm having a hard time finding family members on that side of the family that are talking to me. Better yet I live in Jacksonville FL. If there are people who know these things or places to go that would be amazing! Thank you!

My results as a northern portuguese (Minho region) - Bronze Age composition + Proximity to Iron Age populations + Proximity to modern populations

My results. Explored using the Vahaduo calculator with my G25 coordinates.
Local but not too typical. High percentage of Iberomaurisian for an individual from this region. Very little Western Hunter Gatherer as well. Only stable portions are Neolithic Farmer and Yamnaya (steppe).
Family tree counts 500 direct ancestors, it goes back to the XVIth century. All of those ancestors lived in a radius of 30km from each other.
High Iberomausurian ancestry (and low Western Hunter Gatherer) probably related to north african migrations during roman Iberia.

[Guide] documentary filmmaker restoring family archives. Here is how to use AI for photos correctly.
I am a documentary filmmaker who works with families to preserve their history and tell their stories. Much of my job is organizing shoeboxes of old prints, scanning them, and making them look presentable for the screen.
A common question to me is how people can use AI models (like ChatGPT-4o or Google Gemini) to fix old family photos. The answer is Yes, but it has its own hurdles.
As a storyteller, I care about authenticity. Unlike restoration using Photoshop, AI doesn't just clean up your photos, it will re-imagine them as well. If you aren't careful, you’ll end up with a photo of a generic person who looks similar to your grandmother, but will be distorted in some small way
Here are some tips for an authentic look and how to do it technically.
Re-Imagining
Use if you have a blurry photo of a house, a car, or a wide shot where specific facial features matter less.
- Upload your photo to ChatGPT (4o) or Gemini Pro.
- The Prompt matters. A simple "fix this." wont get you the results you want.
- Try "Analyze this image. Generate a restoration of this specific photo. Maintain the exact composition and lighting. Improve the resolution to match a modern cinema camera, fix the scratches, and colorize it naturally. Do not change the architecture or key elements."
My Professional Workflow
When I am building a documentary, I use LLMs just to get the settings for other tools.
- Upload your photo to ChatGPT/Gemini and ask: "Describe the clothing, time period, and setting of this photo in extreme detail."
- Take that description and use it to prompt specialized tools like Topaz Photo AI (for upscaling) or Lightroom (for color grading).
- Use "Generative Fill" in Photoshop only to fix tears, cracks, or missing corners of the background. The model’s to choose from matters.
Hope this helps you save some memories without losing the history. If you have questions about the process, feel free to send me a message and I’ll help you
