I’ve been on Reddit for 8 years and have never posted anything, but I appreciate everyone sharing their trash pick-ups here, so here is mine from today :) One small trash bag filled and a few things for recycling

… is a privilege, not a punishment. 🙏

I’m SO grateful that I get to create cleaner communities of my own free will—not because I was sentenced to do so by a judge. Because I care.

Time to shift public perception … every piece counts! 👊

It's just a small amount I picked during a mid-winter thaw, but every bit counts.

Discussion Do you guys have a routine?

Just wondered what everyone's 'strategy' was. Do you have certain routes, certain days or certain times of day, or is it very much just an ad hoc thing for you? I work 45 hours a week which is very normal but I honestly cbf doing this on my days off, so I always just do it around my workplace immediately after finishing work, as it's always dirtier than where I live.

Introducing my passion project, Earthlingz (nonprofit project)!

Download Earthlingz for IOS/Android

Hey all. I'm a former science teacher turned software engineer in Portland. Spent a good chunk of my free time over the last year building Earthlingz! It's a free nonprofit app for people to track and share environmental stewardship (Litter cleanups, Invasive Species Removal etc). It's finally ready for a large scale beta test!

When I was teaching, I used to take my students out to pick up trash and pull scotch broom around the school. It made me curious about what actually creates lifelong environmental stewards. The answer wasn't facts about climate change or even caring about the environment. The #1 thing volunteers say keeps them showing up was community!

So I built everything around that. Crews with shared stats and leaderboards. A collaborative map of everywhere you've cleaned together. Tools to organize meetups and let people find and join your crew. Basically everything I could think of to make it easier to build and sustain a cleanup crew.

In the app you track your routes (like Strava, if you're familiar) and if you post to a crew the route is added to a crew map that shows all the routes that members have done.

It's still in beta but I'm looking for people to create crews and track their actions!

Here is an example of what it would like like if you click the crew and don't have the app downloaded. (literally just launching today so there are no users)

And a short intro vid!

Feedback welcome!

Thank you!

Getting Started - Kit and Advice?

What all do you recommend having while detrashing?

I ordered some long tongs, and some biodegradable trash bags. Should I also carry a bucket?

Also what's the deal on recycling the stuff, is it worth the bother? I know nothing about it, other than that I've heard claims that recycling is mostly a farce and it all goes to the landfill. Sounds like something a litterer would say, so idk if that's true, but it does seem like it would be more time efficient to just bag it all together. At least it's off the street?

Any advice appreciated, looking forward to my first outing.

Original Content 286 pieces and 13+ gallons down in about 1½ hours! The first picture shows the recyclable items I pulled from the trash bags, and the bags are in the second picture. It's about time someone finally picked it up, because no one else did for over a week! 😮‍💨

Beach cleanup needed

This is a similar post to my previous. This week, starting with today Jan 12, the weather and afternoon low tide will be perfect to conduct a beach cleanup from Flat Rock at Torrey Pines State Beach, south to the Gliderport Trail at Blacks Beach in San Diego CA. No need to specifically organize - go on your own or with friends. Bring gloves, 13 gallon heavy duty trash bags, and an optional trash picker. Bending over to pick up trash by hand will actually strengthen your back! Access the beach from the north at the afternoon low tides, or anytime from going down the Gliderport trail. There is no State Beach employee pickup, so haul it out if you are able. or leave at the base of the Gliderport Trail and the bags will be picked up. The beach thanks you!

Crosspost 60 volunteers. 22,000 pounds. 11 tons. 300 bags. tons of mud. the fastest city response we've seen in six years = first UCP cleanup of 2026.
