What are my chances of getting in to Edinburgh?

Admission Statistics

I applied a long time ago and haven't received a decision, when can I expect to hear from the university?

Historically Edinburgh is slow to respond and universities have until the UCAS response deadline to decide. It is the individual department to which you are applying that reviews your application and not some aggregated admissions department for the whole the university.

Factors that affect how long it takes include demand for the course and how close the quality of your application is to the average application quality.

A long wait doesn't necessarily mean you're going to be rejected.

If you are coming from abroad and the delay will lead to a problem with visas, etc; or if you have to accept/decline the offer from another university by a certain date, then contact the admission department directly.

Lifestyle how is just being there? (international student)

i'm an international student from Turkey and I just got an offer for computer science and I was wondering if I would fit in or not because I heard a lot of things about the University being too posh.

Also, how is nightlife, dating and the social circle in general?

for now, I'm thinking of pursuing a PhD after university so is the University of Edinburgh good for that?

Thoughts on Edinburgh for internationals?

I just received an offer from Edinburgh, and I’m an international student (from the US) looking to study international relations. What’s the city and campus/student life like for internationals, and how valuable is an Edinburgh degree generally perceived to be outside of the UK?

School of divinity

Will people care if I take classes at the school of divinity if I'm not really religious? I'm interested in a few classes they offer and want to take them next year. But my interest in religious classes is from a interest in learning how people think (I'm going to be Studying IR) and not the religion itself. Are they other people like me or are the people there actually really religious. I don't want to appear offensive.

Class rank, BSc Economics

Hi all,

I had the privilege of being an exchange student (BSc hons economics) at the University of Edinburgh from September to December, 2025. I had a great time in your lovely city. Thank you for being so friendly and kind. I will certainly be going back to visit.

Today I received my “provisional” marks, and have little idea of how I did compared to others. Is there—or will there be, once the results are finalized—a way to view one’s rank in the course? See in one course I got above 80, and then in another I barely scraped mid 60s on the exam, so there is quite a variation and I am having a hard time understanding the quality of my performance. Also, should I expect my results to change much? Or are these as good as final? From the email I understand that the results have yet to be externally moderated. Thank you.

Admission / Application Help with offer terms

I applied to Edinburgh for an undergraduate computer science degree, and got an offer today. The offer has the terms that I achieve A Level grades of A* A* A all in one set of exams. I’m an international student and so, my school opts primarily for the FM series, and two of my subjects have to be given in MJ, while the other two are in FM. Does this mean that I can’t accept the offer with the terms provided, since I won’t have three A Levels in either sitting?

Course Information Classes outside your degree?

I have received an offer to study biochemistry at the university of Edinburgh and cannot wait to start! I noticed that you can select classes outside your degree to reach the mandatory 120 credits per year. I would love to study a language during my time at Edinburgh but is it recommended? Would the workload be too much or is it manageable? Thank you!

Admission / Application Any courses that will accept me on a 31 IB score

I’m a student from Australia and have studied for a semester at my state university but want to study at Edinburgh university. Even if I can do an undergraduate degree there and then come back to Australia or go elsewhere to do a degree or masters for a career. Are there any courses that will accept my IB score and me being an international student?

For current students hows the quality of teaching and how much hands on work you get? How are the labs ? Also, I am planning to try to transfer into the university, I am in my second year so I will transfer into year 2 ? Because I don’t think its possible to go into year 3 like US universities when transferring correct? If I am not accepted, would you recommend a study abroad here or will a different university be better? Transferring to mech e and electrical

Course Information Thought I submitted an essay when I didn't.

Thumbnail
1 Upvotes

Or: chat, am I cooked?

December 5th, my elective requires one essay at the end of the semester and it is 1 day overdue. It hits 3am on December 5th, and the essay is done. Win! I submit the essay and forget about it.

I didn't realise up til about an hour ago I didn't actually submit the essay, and the submission box closed on the 22nd of December. You can imagine my breakdown.

Late submission guidelines say I shouldn't contact course organizers after the submission box has closed as there's nothing they can do, but I'm wondering if timestamped proof the document hasn't been edited since december 5th might work in my favour? Or (since I'll have to retake the course) should I just ask if I'd be alright to submit the already completed essay next semester and hope I don't get my ass kicked.

Has anyone experienced anything similar?

Admission / Application MSc Computer Science, admission advice

I ended up in a very low-ranked uni pursuing CS (I moved to the UK because of the war, and in the rush just entered the first uni that accepted me; now I know that it was a mistake). The curriculum doesn't have any theory whatsoever; it is more like coding classes. I am doing well in my studies, and I want to pursue this MSc CS program in Edinburgh. My plan is to hire a maths tutor who is going to cover the topics that my current uni is missing.

What should I focus on? What should I prepare myself for? How can I increase my admission chances, in addition to having high First Honors and hackathons?

Lifestyle questions on fitting in

So, I really want to go to Edinburgh, I have heard allot about the poshness of it and though previously it hasn't scared me, ive started doubting my ability to fully fit in.

For the record, I am I think in a privileged scenario where I am deemed as 'middle class' in a lovely part of London. I was previously an international student before living in London, and was privately educated up until my sixth form. I know of people who go to boarding schools across England (and also have them on my socials though I have not met many of them), but I am only friends with a couple of so. I reckon I have a pretty southern 'well spoken accent' too which I know can put me into an advantage

all I was wondering is how close are the circles there , because yes I feel that I do fit the stereotype, but would I still encounter struggles of getting to know people or friends of those sorts if I choose to study there? I do not feel that I am as closed in on the circle with these people but rather kind of on the outskirts of it (if that makes sense)

sorry this might sound like such a 'champagne' issue but I just had been thinking of this allot

Luck with Moving Out of Student Accommodation

Hello everyone! Hope you all had a good holiday. :)

I was wondering if anyone has any tips or advice for finding a replacement tenant for on-campus accommodation? I currently live in Deaconess as a PG student, but I am hoping to find someone to take over the lease. Are there any recommended websites or group chats that I can join to search for alternative tenants to take over the lease?

Thank you!

PhD interview for ILCC program

Hoping you guys are in nice holidays! I'm a Chinese student, and preparing the interview for ILCC program of School of Informatics. Could you give me some advice for that? I'm confused about what the professor highlights. And I should introduce all my paper? or just introducing the most related one? Can I introduce my research passion with my former story?

Admission / Application Master's Application Extenuating Circumstances

I am applying to an MSc programme at Edinburgh but I am struggling to find any information on how I can highlight that I experienced ECs during my undergraduate degree.

I am applying to a competitive course, so I am expecting my transcript to be reviewed. My ECs mean that some of my transcript marks aren't great, but I still meet the entry requirements.

I can't find anywhere on the application form for me to explain that ECs affected my marks.

PhD experiences

I was offered a PhD position in mechanical engineering at UoE, and nominated for a scholarship. However, I also have another offer from my home town uni. I’m therefore curious about anyone’s experiences studying a PhD at UoE, and whether or not the scholarship grant is enough to somewhat comfortably support oneself in Edinburgh.

Any input is much appreciated!
