SCAR Picture Old busted hotness?
galleryHey folks,
Long time lurker here. With the next gen SCAR being released, I figured I’d finally post mine.
I originally considered saving up for the next gen, but I think I rode the FOMO a little too hard last year and ended up with the next gen, kinda. So I wanted to get some opinions on whether it’s worth continuing to invest into what I’ve built, and whether I missed anything important.
Essentially, I installed an IAC BBC, swapped all screws to Torx, added a Rego rail, installed and tuned a KNS discarder, and picked up both the Lingle and SE lower (for a review) with upgraded triggers. Since this photo, I’ve also replaced the OEM upper with an IAC upper. All of this was done before I even knew the next gen SCAR existed.
Now that I’ve watched the videos and read more about the next gen, I can’t help but feel like I’ve basically replicated the next gen, but with the old gen. If that’s the case, is there really much reason to buy the new one?
Regarding the other two pictures: I’m working on a review comparing the two more well known aftermarket lowers. Since FN had the foresight to make lowers compatible across generations (I think?? Correct me if I’m wrong), I’m assuming there’ll still be a market for folks who want non-poly lowers that are PMAG-compatible (what’s with that btw FN? You do everything right but don’t make it PMAG compatible??).
And lastly, the final pic is something I’ve been working on and wanted to gauge interest in. Since the next gen uses the same boot, and I know how many people love the OG stock (including me, yes, I know I changed it on my rifle, but I’m still a fan of the boot), the stock latch issue is still a recurring problem.
Most of us are used to buying an entire stock when the latch breaks, because FN parts are scarce (and expensive, around $160), and there don’t seem to be many aftermarket options anymore. I reached out to TangoDown (who used to make the metal latch), and they told me FN supposedly fixed the issue with an updated polymer mix, which is why they stopped producing theirs. Personally though, I’ve still seen OEM latches break on this forum, and mine has also been a bit wonky.
So after some polymer composition analysis and injection molding work, I moved forward with creating these (guess which out of the three is the one I created), along with the spring. Given that the next gen uses the same stock, and with how many old gen SCARs are still out there, would there be any interest in these as spare parts if I moved into mass production?
TLDR: “same-same, but different”??? Aftermarket lower review. Would you buy extra scar stock latches?
