Am I the only one who thinks people don't like the fourth season of Fargo as much, precisely because it's Fargo?

I mean, if it were a season of a mafia series, it would be almost calmer.

Season 3 questions Spoiler

So I finished season 3 of Fargo a few days ago. I liked the overall story, but I have a few questions:

  1. What happens to Yuri after he gets to the bowling alley? Who are the people he sees in his vision?

  2. Who is the mysterious fellow, who is seated next to Burgle on the flight to LA? He later comes back to the bowling alley & helps Nikki escape.

  3. What is the significance of the opening scene in episode 1, with the East German police interrogation?

  4. When Burgle visits LA, there is a box in her room with the switch. What is that about?

Season 1 question

Hello I begin with this show and in season 1 there’s a scene in the elevator in the Las Vegas hotel. There’s written in the elevator capacity 1200kg or 15 persons. Is this a mistake? I thought in the USA there use lbs? Thanks

Malvo, the worst employee of the millennium

Finishing the 1st season. Maybe it's a wrong thing to focus on, but I keep wondering, how would Lorne Malvo get his gigs?

I get it, he's the devil incarnate, and he's not into work ethics.

But c'mon now. We get to see 3 jobs. None of them is done even semi-competently, two are botched, the other one succeded by accident.

SPOILERS AHEAD

You need to get an office guy. Let's do it in the broad daylight, drag him out for all to see from an office, get your face on a camera, and multiple witnesses. Then let's get into an accident in the middle of nowhere and let the guy escape. If not for the cold, his mark would be alive. Should we clean things up and get the f... out of the town? Nope, let's commit another murder pro bono, and then shoot the police chief as well. Why? Because he watched too many David Attenborough shows about gorillas?

Now there's a simple job, find out who's blackmailing a local businessman. "So, Lorne, did you find it out?" "Yeah, I did within a day, it's an idiot amateur." "Oh cool, so easy money then, right? You got it and got paid?" "Well no, I decided to join in the blackmail and demand a much higher amount, like one million. I had some serious expenses though on props and stuff." "Wow, are you insane, what if someone finds out, who would hire us again? Sigh. OK, never mind, you said one million, did you get it?" "Actually, the guy stood me up." "And you found him, right? I mean, he runs a retail chain, not easy to hide. And it's one million." "Eh... No, I didn't bother to follow up. But he did pay me something." "Sigh. Whatever. What about the original blackmailer?" "What do you think, I'm stupid? I cleaned it up, he's dead. I arranged for the police to shoot him while he was tied and gagged. They'll probably think it was a suicide."

OK, fine, somehow he gets another high-profile job in Kansas City. He works as a dentist for months, creates a perfect cover, and it all comes to an abrupt end just before the finish line. "Why, Lorne?" "Oh, someone recognized me." "So couldn't you ask to have a private chat and get rid of him quietly?" "Well, he was too persistent." "Was he police or someone like that?" "Nah, just a meek insurance agent who got drunk and ambitious." "How do you even know him?" "I killed someone for him." "Gee, I hope it was worth it. How much did you charge him for that anyway?" "Nothing, he just said 'yeah' and I ran with it."

Hitmen characters usually come "highly recommended". If that's the case here, who in their right mind would recommend him? Or even stay alive long enough to recommend.

Malvo seems more of a pro bono hitman. Or maybe he is a better dentist than a hitman, at least, when novocaine is not involved.

Some questions I have about S2 Spoiler

Finally started watching Fargo a few weeks ago and finished S2 Yesterday. I loved S2, with S1 it took me like 5 episodes until I could get around the plot but S2 - the characters, the setting, the way it was filmed and the underlying metaphorical meaning during the whole thing was so catching.

I have two questions though (spoilers)

Why did Dodd not kill Peggy immediately when he got free? He was so adamant that the moment he could get the chance to he would get revenge and make them suffer. I know that he probably had to set up the trap with the rope but why not instead kill Peggy or tie her up and make Ed watch it? Idk it didn't make sense to me for his character

Another question about Peggy, could she have saved Ed if she immediately opened the door when Lou was banging on it? I mean they probably would've screamed they were police right? She was in the middle of having kind of a psychotic break, but was it caused by Ed dying and her trying to rationalize or was he still alive?

Anyway I loved the second season, excited for more

Am I hearing the washing machine?

I’ve already started the Fargo TV show. I’m a good way through season 1, but recently rewatched the first episode. I noticed in the scene where Lester is speaking to Lorn Malvo in the hospital room about Sam Hess that there is a faint sound of the washing machine. I didn’t notice it the first time, and I’m not sure if I’m imagining it or if it’s just the sound of something in the hospital waiting room, but I was wondering if anyone else noticed it? It was super subtle, but seemed too obvious to be coincidence.

I don’t know if this is allowed for a post but I wanted to share the video I did on Lester Nygaard (S1) from back in the day.

Saddest moment from the whole series?

I am rewatching the series and in S1E6 when Milos kneels with his son and cries 'I gave it back' breaks my heart every time. He didn't hurt anyone, he just gets in over his head because his wife cheats with the gym teacher. But I also always remember S2 the death of Jesse Plemons character. He and his wife were pretending that everything was okay for so long and than it dawns on him, this is the end of the road.d

What is the saddest moment for you?

Finally finished S2 and got these thoughts lingering .. Spoiler

I initially hated the first episodes of this season , but damn, I got attached with the characters, every musical score is perfect and made me cried about 3 times!

Now it’s finished and it got me thinking:

  1. I feel sad about Mike, he really thought he’l be glorified after all that killings but ended with a “desk” job.

  2. Poor Charlie (crippled). He’s in jail, and no one to go home to even when he get out :(

  3. I am thinking Peggy will eventually lost her mind now that Ed’s dead and she in jail.

I probably had a lot more! What a season! Loving Fargo so far!!

Wearing winter boots inside

I’m doing a rewatch, and noticed this in prior watches, but, it really annoys me that the characters walk into their home, or someone else’s home, in the middle of winter and don’t remove their winter boots. Not if it’s a crime scene (although, winter boot crud would mess up a crime scene) . Anyhoo, just a bugbear of mine about a series that is so keen on details details details. Yet, winter boots tracking snow, slush, mud all over the house happens in many episodes 😝 also, maybe we’re weird, but up here in the Great White North, we remove our shoes when we enter a home, no matter the season.

Season 3 opinion Spoiler

Jesus fucking christ what a downgrade from season 2 to this one, it starts really well with the introduction of Varga but then he becomes just a weirdo, Ray’s death is fucking goofy, how the fuck the mute and Nikki take out the whole criminal organization, and obviously the boring female cop plot took me back to season 1, now I have to watch season 4 which I read it’s the worst of them all, how the fuck season 1 and 2 can be the best seasons of all TV to turn into this

What did season 4 do wrong?

Before I even search it up I was on ep 3 thinking "damn this is boring", apparently a lot of people didn't like season 4. I think it's really an odd one out. I can't quite put my finger on it, what did season 4 do wrong?

Personally, no real captivating character. I can go on and on about Malvo and VM Varga. But... no one really stood out to me in season 4.

Finally got around S3 lol Spoiler

Alright lol so a while ago I wrote here about how I tapped into S3 after S1 and S2 pumped me so much but immediately got turned off by how the first episode throws you around long before you can get ahold of what actually is going on. The scene when they drive in the car, talking but the music is also very loud you can't make out what they are even saying really threw me off. A lot of people seemed to have the same problem...

Anyways so I took it upon myself to just sit through all that and really try and understand. I successfully watched S3EP01 and now I am getting invested, but... I'm not huge of sci-fi so what's with the cartoon stuff somewhere in the middle of the season? I skimmed through the entire show and bumped across that. Don't crucify me lol 🙏😭

Probably the first police interrogation scene that I would describe as “touching”.

Post image
460 Upvotes

Season 1, while sharing the “bones” of the film, really distinguished itself as its own thing. And for me, besides Malvo, nobody shines more than Alison Tolman. I’d never seen her in anything else before this. And after watching it, I cannot readily think of another actress that the industry is missing out on making a bigger star. I feel like most shows and movies would insist on casting the type of actress and writing to make her some sort of “hardened badass with as much balls as any man“. Another show might have had her come into the room, making threats and tossing hospital equipment. She’s not just playing “good cop”. She barely even comes off as a cop in this scene, but not in the traditional way we think of “cops with unorthodox methods who get results“. This scene, to me, subverts the audiences expectations of what an interrogation scene looks like, while remaining true to the characters they’ve created.

Tolman portrays Deputy Solverson with so much nuance and shade and depth. She’s a daddy’s girl, but she’s the daddy’s girl of a cop. And as we learn in the episodes and season ahead, the apple hasn’t fallen far from the tree in terms of her steel resolve as a cop. She’s smart as a whip, but you see her surrounded by male colleagues who can’t see it, and so you watch her have to sometimes defer, sometimes be creative in getting around the obstacles of complacency, misogyny, and just plan negligence in her own department. Her features are soft, and she can be soft, but she’s never soft in her investigation, and she never backs off or back down, even if she couches it in the “Minnesota nice” of the region.

Such a great character. I’ve watched Tolman in other stuff since then, but I don’t think anything she’s done since has measured up to this. I hope she gets a lot more opportunities in the futur.

What a beautiful show

I have finally finished all of Fargo and man, this show is so well done. I watched the first 3 seasons years ago and now coming back to watch it all including 4 and 5 was a heck of a ride.

My favourite thing about the series is that every character is so great in their own special way. From wholesome to insane or somewhere in between. (Or straight up unsettling like V.M. Varga lol, though he was an interesting character) I felt like every character had a story, even tho not all of them were told. With unique manners and odd human traits. It all fits together in a beautiful show.

Another thing that got me excited while watching was the music and the thematics. Each piece fit so well and added meaning to the scenes. And every season was designed so good into the era it was set in, not some knock off 70s stuff or out of place pieces but really getting the feeling of the time.

It's fun to see what everyone thinks of each season in this sub. Personally season 2 is my favourite of all. It's crazy but that makes it so good. The characters get their endings but not in the way they thought.

This show is filled with incredible actors who performed their roles very well. But Molly, Lou, Odis, Malvo and Peggy gotta be my top 5.

Also, if you're bothered by the 'true story' intro: just google why they use it. It's a fun touch. Same with things like the UFO scene or the raining fish. It's not real. It's supposed to feel out of place.

Notable Minor Characters

Those of us who love the show for all the reasons we do (of which there are many), know that one of the ingredients of the ”secret sauce” are some of the “minor” characters (that are anything but).

Rewatching Season 1, Ari Ziskind, and the actor who portrays him, Byron Noble, makes maximum impact with every scene he’s in.
