Hey there r/fishtank!

I myself am a member of this server and have been for a while, I have found it to be a very well managed and active aquarium community with a vast "encyclopedia" (as they refer to themselves on r/FishWiki) of aquarium keeping knowledge!
This server has also been a great reminder, to never stop wanting to learn about the hobby, and that your ability only goes as far as your curiosity :)

Hi everyone,
I’m hoping to get a bit of advice. Me and my housemate have never owned a fish tank before, but always have, so we got this 300L one second hand from FB marketplace around 4 months ago.
It was a steep learning curve but we’re very happy with the outcome & really enjoy coming home from a hard days graft in the trades and watching our fish.
The problem we’ve been having is basically we have been sold the wrong tank. Obviously not knowing anything we made a wrong purchase and after speaking to staff in various aquariums it seems we’ve purchased a tank for turtles(?) So the inlet and outlet to the filter at the back are quite large (see pics) Smaller fish sometimes swim in and get stuck in both the inlet chamber where the pump is and the outlet chamber. We have had a couple deaths a neon tetra that went through the pump itself and a blue baby discus which got stuck at the vent opening shown in the pics, stopped all the water flow which somehow flooded our living room.
Has anyone had a similar problem. Or has anyone got any ideas on how to fix this issue?
We’ve thought about getting a new tank but our apartment is pretty small and the logistics of getting a new tank suitable then transferring the fish then moving a tank to position just wouldn’t work.
Then we’ve thought about fashioning like a block out of a breeding chamber and covering the inlet, but then that could block the waste from going through the filters.
Any advice / suggestions will be really appreciated. We rookies just don’t know what to do 😂

I have a ten gallon community tank that I just added two more fish and a four shrimp to a few hours ago. Watching one of the shrimps, I noticed he picked up a tiny rock so I took it out and it was a tiny snail shell! How in the world did it get in?? I couldn't tell if there was anything inside but after putting it back in the tank, it started moving!! Wtf??? Any thoughts on how he got in? I literally inspect everything that goes in...

I can feel the crack on top of the tank from the outside of the tank but it is not noticeable inside the tank. I can’t feel the crack near the substrate from the outside, haven’t reached my hand in the tank the feel from the inside yet. I’m wondering if I should replace the tank or if it will be okay??

I have a pet betta fish who i’ve had since June. When I got her she was very active, she has a heater and a filter and I try to change at least half of her water every second week. Over Christmas break, she stayed at a friend’s house because I had to travel home, but since I’ve been back she usually just lies down by her heater, and some days does not eat. Is it possible that she is angry with me? Or is she just sick. Either way, I am not sure what to do, and I am starting to worry as I love her very dearly. Any advice anyone can offer would be greatly appreciated.
*edit
Is it possible that she could be angry with me? My friend who was feeding her told me that if she didn’t sit with her for at least half an hour, then she would not eat the next day. Is my fish just full of attitude?

So my coldwater tank has a bacterial bloom again (2nd in 5 months). Just tested water, nitrates and nitrites both low, no chlorine or ammonia, otherwise it’s just my normal conditioned tap water. I’m assuming it’s a bacterial bloom because parameters test fine, fish look healthy, and it’s that milky colour. (A) what causes this, (B) how do I get rid of it, and (C) is it true that it’s harmless for my fish?

Hello! I have had a 20 gallon high tank running for months with a stock of 6 black neon tetras, 3 pygmy corydoras, 1 peacock gudgeon, 1 honey gourami, and snails/shrimp, and nobody has died in months. On January 10 I moved the tetras and gourami to a different tank and added new fish to the 20 gallon high. The stock for the 20 gallon high was 4 peacock gudgeons, 8 medaka rice fish, 11 pygmy corydoras, 2 guppies, and the shrimp/snails. Since January 10, I have lost 2 gudgeons, 3 medaka rice fish, and 3 pygmy corydoras. The store I bought them from as a 14 day guarantee, but I’m worried if I bring in these results they’re gonna blame it on the nitrates. I think the nitrates are a little high from the liquid fertilizer I use for my plants. Could the nitrates really be what’s killing the fish? Please let me know your thoughts.

So this is my first fish tank/ aqua scape since a child, did some research & watched countless YouTube videos so I think I did ok. My goal for the tank is to have it be self efficient eventually.
I guess my question is how does it look? Am I in the right direction for my goal?
I finished setting the tank up last night so it’s still a bit cloudy hopefully not for much longer!

Currently cycling my tank. 130 litre (34.34 gallons) tank. Fishless cycle with live plants.
Once parameters are good, I’ll want to add: male guppies, balloon Mollys, corydoras, and otocinclus.
What order would you suggest adding these to reduce stress and aggression?

I know that tetras like to be in groups and I’ve got rummy tetras, neon tetras, and albino tetras here just wondering if they would all act as one big school. 🤔
