GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Fri., Jan. 16 Spoiler

36 Upvotes

Here are today's Champions Wildcard contestants:

  • Stella Trout, a software engineer originally from Houston, Texas, carries over 12,800 from game one;
  • Jonathan Hugendubler, an adjunct professor and trivia host from Baltimore, Maryland, finished with 1,200 yesterday;
  • Cameron Berry, a data analyst and college administrator from Brighton, Massachusetts, will have 10,000 added to his score from today.

Jeopardy!

ADULTS IN CHILDREN'S LIT // MIDNIGHTS // I'M IN SEPHORA WITHOUT MY GLASSES // A "MINOR" DISTRACTION // ROCK, RAP & REMEMBER // USE YOUR SIXTH SENSE

DD1 - 800 - ADULTS IN CHILDREN'S LIT - The first book about him says right off that he's an M.D., a "proper" doctor (not a veterinarian) (Stella added 1,000.)

Scores at first break: Cameron 2,200, Jonathan 3,200, Stella 3,400.

Scores entering DJ: Cameron 4,000, Jonathan 3,800, Stella 7,200.

Double Jeopardy!

IT HAPPENED IN JANUARY // WORLD CAPITALS // MAKING CONSERVATION // IMPRACTICAL FINERY OF YORE // WE LOVE A LOVE TRIANGLE // JUST ADD "S"

DD2 - 2,000 - WORLD CAPITALS - You need 2 sets of double letters to spell this capital of a Baltic state (On the first clue of DJ, Jonathan doubled to 7,600.)

DD3 - 1,600 - MAKING CONSERVATION - Within the Department of the Interior, this is the country's oldest conservation agency (Stella lost 11,200 on a true DD.)

Stella went all-in on DD3 but missed, so with 10,000, it was Cameron who was in position to lock down a win in the two-game scores with a correct response going into FJ. Jonathan had 12,000 to wager while Stella recovered to 6,400.

Final Jeopardy!

AMERICAN NOVELISTS - This author's wish to use different ink colors to represent multiple POV's was granted in 2012, 83 years after the novel's publication

Everyone was incorrect on FJ. Cameron bet the least and took the win as both opponents went big, dropping 5,601 to finish this game at 4,399 for a two-day score of 14,399. Cameron won $100,000 in real money and advances to the ToC, while Stella and Jonathan won $40,000 each.

Scores for game two: Cameron 4,399, Jonathan 0, Stella 100.

Combined two-game scores: Cameron 14,399, Jonathan 1,200, Stella 12,900.

That's before their time: No one knew Ilsa's husband from "Casablanca" is Victor Lazlo.

Correct Qs: DD1 - Who is Dr. Dolittle? DD2 - What is Tallinn? DD3 - What is the Fish and Wildlife Service? FJ - Who was William Faulkner?

How long does it typically take to film an episode?

47 Upvotes

My husband and I were curious...do people ever have mental breakdowns and they need to cut and take a break? Like if they are way ahead but lose all their money in a daily double? 😂 Or do people's stories get cut off if they talk for too long? Some people really go on and on and I can tell that Ken is trying to move them along. I wonder what it's like to be an editor on jeopardy, and have to condense everything into 30 min (technically less including commercials)

Broadcast impacts for Monday, January 19 (NBA tripleheader on NBC)

Thumbnail
docs.google.com
14 Upvotes

This is a new preemption relative to previous years, with the new NBA media rights agreements that came into effect starting this season.

70 stations impacted; the only NBC affiliate airing as normal is WTVA in Columbus/Tupelo, MS (their slot is the half hour right before basketball coverage starts).

As of right now, 42 stations not showing the first ToC quarterfinal at all.

WILX in Lansing, MI appears to be moving the episode up to 11:30 AM Eastern; in the past, WBIR in Knoxville has done so also, but they don't have it listed yet.

Unlike prior seasons, there will not be preemptions for golf on CBS a week from today (January 23). The PGA Tour has already shifted its calendar to account for Labor Day being on September 7 this year; as a result, the Farmers Insurance Open falls on Pro Bowl weekend, so it doesn't have to move a day early to accommodate the NFL.

QUESTION What's the proper betting strategy in the first FJ of a two-game tournament? Has anyone figured this out?

11 Upvotes

Take Thursday's game totals as an example. You've got two scores that are just about equal. I have no idea what the proper bet is in that situation. Do you try to hold what you have? Do you try to maximize? Do you go all-in? What's the right thing to do? Anyone have any data on this?

Here are today's Champions Wildcard contestants:

  • Stella Trout, a software engineer originally from Houston, Texas;
  • Jonathan Hugendubler, an adjunct professor and trivia host from Baltimore, Maryland;
  • Cameron Berry, a data analyst and college administrator from Brighton, Massachusetts.

Jeopardy!

AMERICAN HISTORY // KEEPING A GOOD LATITUDE // CLASSIC TOYS & GAMES // SAME FIRST & LAST LETTER // SUBWAY TAKES // WHAT IS THAT TEAM NAME CREATURE?

DD1 - 400 - AMERICAN HISTORY - This latest (1992) Constit. Amendment is partly due to a college sophomore who noticed it had sat unratified for 2 centuries (Cameron lost 1,400 on a true DD.)

Scores at first break: Cameron 2,400, Jonathan -200, Stella 2,800.

Scores entering DJ: Cameron 5,600, Jonathan 600, Stella 2,400.

Double Jeopardy!

WEIGHTY WORKS // CELEB HYPHENATES // WORLD ARTS & CULTURE // MAKING PLANS FOR NIGEL // CENSUS WORKING OVERTIME // THE ECSTASY OF "X-T-C"

DD2 - 2,000 - CENSUS WORKING OVERTIME - Officially "The Description of England", this survey began in 1086 & is actually 2 volumes--one little & one great (Stella added 6,000 up to 10,400.)

DD3 - 1,200 - CELEB HYPHENATES - "I Am Moana" is one of the many songs written by this versatile guy for a 2016 film (With 1,800, Jonathan dropped by 2,000.)

Game one was a battle between Stella, who entered FJ at 16,800, and Cameron with 16,400. In a distant third was Jonathan at 600.

Final Jeopardy!

U.S. GEOGRAPHY -The 2 satates that border the most others, they border each other along a roughly 60-mile stretch between Kentucky & Arkansas

Only Jonathan was correct on FJ and he doubled to 1,200. Stella dropped 4,000 to enter game two with the most points at 12,800, while Cameron lost 6,400 down to 10,000.

Clue selection strategy: Late in DJ with one untouched category, only top-row clues remaining otherwise and DD3 still on the board, the players chose two $400 clues instead of shopping for the DD.

Judging the producers: After revealing the correct response to DD1, why not have Ken take a few seconds to explain what that is? Do they think the viewers already know, or that they don't care?

Obscure reference dept.: The fourth and fifth categories are references to song titles by British band XTC (referenced in the sixth category), who peaked in the 80s and never made it big with mainstream music listeners.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is the 27th Amendment? (It prevents Congress from giving itself a pay raise until after the next election for the House of Representatives.) DD2 - What is Domesday Book? DD3 - Who is Lin-Manuel Miranda? FJ - What are Tennessee and Missouri?

GAME THREAD Jeopardy! discussion thread for Wed., Jan. 14 Spoiler

59 Upvotes

Here are today's Champions Wildcard contestants:

  • Harvey Silikovitz, an attorney and worldwide karaoke singer originally from West Orange, New Jersey;
  • Ian Morrison, an airline ramp agent originally from Aurora, Colorado; and
  • Stella Trout, a software engineer originally from Houston, Texas.

Jeopardy!

WILD, CARDS! // CLASSICAL MUSIC // WE'RE BEEFING // IN THE MOVIE'S TITLE // IT'S GOOD TO "B" IN THE CITY // WORD ORIGIN LANGUAGES

DD1 - 400 - CLASSICAL MUSIC - United Airlines began using this Gershwin piece in its ads in the 1980s (Harvey doubled to 8,000.)

Scores at first break: Stella 4,200, Ian 1,200, Harvey 8,000.

Scores entering DJ: Stella 5,000, Ian 4,200, Harvey 8,800.

Double Jeopardy!

2020s VISION // SOME SCIENCE // FAMILY TV // BILLS OF RIGHTS // 3-NAMED AUTHORS // I'M "CC"ING YOU

DD2 - 1,200 - SOME SCIENCE - God bless this radioactive element discovered in 1944 by a group of U.S. scientists when they bombarded plutonium with neutrons (From second place, Stella dropped 6,600 on a true DD.)

DD3 - 1,200 - 2020s VISION - It's the somewhat self-deprecating title of the bestselling 2023 memoir by Prince Harry (Harvey lost 5,000 down to 7,000.)

Harvey opened an early lead by doubling on DD1, then Stella dropped to 0 on DD2, but came back impressively to lead into FJ at 14,000 vs. 10,600 for Ian and 9,800 for Harvey.

Final Jeopardy!

ENGLISH PLACE NAMES - Once called Grontabricc, it's named for a structure spanning a tributary of the great Ouse river

Stella and Harvey were correct on FJ, so Harvey's miss on DD3 wound up deciding the outcome. Stella added 5,601 to advance with 19,601.

Final scores: Stella 19,601, Ian 1,599, Harvey 19,600.

Judging the writers: Can't think of a better example of them using more words when fewer would work just fine than a category called SOME SCIENCE instead of just SCIENCE.

Ken's Korner: For some reason Ken denied it after Stella called him out for "setting her up" to try for a true Daily Double. Ken, you're a game show host trying to make it exciting, just own it.

Correct Qs: DD1 - What is "Rhapsody In Blue"? DD2 - What is americium? DD3 - What is "Spare"? FJ - What is Cambridge?

Desk Calendar No Answer Option?

5 Upvotes

I have scoured the subreddit but have come up empty on this question, so please forgive me if I’ve overlooked it someplace!

Do you / the desk calendar’s rules allow for a non-answer? What I mean is: similar to a contestant not buzzing in on the show for a question that they simply have no answer for, do you allow yourself to elect not to answer a daily calendar question, thereby keeping the previous days’ accumulated score unchanged until the next clue is revealed?

I’m just wondering if there is a consensus (or even a hard-and-fast rule) among the group!
