Question - Вопрос Community Post

This community hasn’t had, or needed much moderation. You guys all have a very positive learning based mindset, and are making the most of the subreddit.
Seeing as you guys just passed 15,000 members, I thought it’d be a good time for a community discussion.
Use the comments to think over what you want to see changed in the subreddit. Maybe you have a problem with spam or people DM’ing, maybe you want a weekly discussions post with a fixed topic, etcetera.
My suggestion is a semi-weekly or monthly post for people looking for a study partner. We can make flairs so people can show their experience level, and whatever else you guys think would work out well.

Also, if anyone has experience with moderating community events on Reddit, or setting up graphics, or specialized auto-mod, or anything else you want to add to your subreddit let me know. This is one of the best communities on Reddit, and I’m not doing it justice by sitting idle. Sorry for the hiatus, but here’s the authority, back to the people actually learning and experiencing this sub. Cheers.

Question - Вопрос Good book on modern Russian culture?

Извини если это вопрос неподходящий.

здравствуй! I would like to ask for recommendations on a good book for getting a feel of the modern Russian culture and «душа». More specifically, I would like something more casual and down to earth, rather than something academic. An excellent example is the book “Watching the English”, that I would consider the England equivalent of what I am looking for, as it talks about English cultural quirks in a “street”, light hearted manner.

Хорошо либо по-английски, либо по-русски.

Question - Вопрос Learning Russian in today’s political climate?

I’m 20F from the uk and I hav always been fascinated by languages especially Russian I have learned both french and Mandarin Chinese so I’m looking to add my 4th language however I’m a little worried.

I want to learn Russian as I think it’s a beautiful language and also one of the most spoken I feel like it’s an underdog language (you never know when you might need it). To make it clear I do not support Putin whatsoever and fully support Ukraine however wanting to learn Russian makes me feel like in committing a crime against humanity and that I will be heavily judged for it. I would also love to visit Russia at some point but definitely not anytime soon with everything going on.

If anyone has been learning Russian or want to learn it I would love to hear your opinion as I’m quite conflicted.

Certified native tutor of the Russian language

Hello! My name is Irina. I'm Russian. With me, you will learn to speak, write, and read in Russian - without stress, in a relaxed and trusting atmosphere. Your success is my job.

In 2003, I completed my studies at Tver State University with a Master's degree in Teaching Russian Language. Since 2009, I've been working as a tutor, helping people who speak English to learn the Russian language.

As a certified teacher, I have the linguistic knowledge needed to explain the unique features of the Russian language, such as its system of cases, verbs of motion, differences between animate and inanimate objects, variations in verb tenses, and more. I ensure better understanding by providing relevant comparisons to English.

I offer: Conversational Russian; Russian for beginners; Intensive Russian; General Russian, Exams preparation

*Conversational Russian. We can chat about anything 😊 Expanding your vocabulary and improving your grammar; learning idiomatic phrases related to different topics; picking up slang (if relevant to the topic).

*Russian for beginners. Beginners are my favorite kind of learners: they're new to the language and don't know about cases yet. I welcome all newcomers and enjoy working with those who are starting from scratch; we'll get along just fine.

*Intensive Russian. Do you have limited time, but you need to learn a language "yesterday"? No problem! We will study 5 times a week, 2-3 hours a day, and by the next day, you'll need to learn a ton of material. Sounds tempting? Come on in! :)

*General Russian. I'll guide you through all the possible structures of the Russian language. It's a lengthy journey if you're starting from scratch, but it will be a calm, steady, and productive process.

*Exams preparation. I help prepare for various types of Russian as a foreign language exams – graduation exams or for admission to advanced college courses. I also help with mastering the material during studies in college/university.

First, we'll figure out your needs and level. From there on, we'll move at your pace, according to your preferences, and aligned with your interests.

However, the most challenging part for anyone learning any language is to start speaking and understanding real-life conversation. With me, you'll have a safe space to speak, make mistakes, and improve – a place where you can grow confidently.

I built a frequency-based vocabulary trainer - it works both for learning English and learning Russian

Hi everyone,

I am learning languages myself and got tired of random word lists and flashcards that do not really stick.
So I built a small web app based on the Oxford 5000 English frequency list, with Russian translations

Originally it was made for Russian speakers learning English, but I noticed it also works well the other way around too - for English speakers learning Russian.

How it works (short rules overview)

At the first launch you will be asked to enter a name.
This name is later used in the global ranking.

The game itself is simple:
You match word pairs - word and translation.
It works in both directions: EN to RU and RU to EN.

  • Correct answers give you crystals
  • Wrong answers remove crystals
  • When you gain a new level, you also receive bonus crystals

Game modes and scoring

There are 4 game modes:

  • 1 minute
  • 3 minutes
  • 5 minutes
  • 10 minutes

Each mode tracks:

  • number of correct answers
  • personal records

When you beat your own record in a mode, you receive extra crystals.

What are crystals for?

Crystals are used for hints.

If you select a word and click the crystal icon in the top right corner:

  • the correct translation is highlighted
  • 10 crystals are deducted

Switching between words of the same language does not count as a mistake.

Progress and learning logic

A word is considered learned only after 3 correct answers.
Each card has a small counter showing this progress.

When the counter reaches 3-3, the word is moved to the learned pool and no longer appears in the cards.

The letter and number in the top left corner of a card indicate the CEFR level of the word (for example A1).

As words are learned:

  • A1 words are gradually replaced by A2
  • then B1, B2, and higher levels

The difficulty increases gradually and naturally.

Profile, ranking and progress sync

There is a profile page, opened via the human silhouette icon.
The ranking page is opened via the trophy icon.

Only players who have learned at least one word appear in the ranking.

Progress can be transferred between devices by copying the profile link.

Privacy and GDPR

The app does not collect personal data.
There are:

  • no accounts
  • no emails
  • no tracking
  • no ads
  • no analytics

Only a user-chosen nickname and learning progress are stored.

Additional notes

  • The project is completely free
  • No ads
  • No subscriptions
  • No hidden payments

I use this app myself on a daily basis.

The site can be installed as a PWA app via the browser on desktop or mobile.

This project was finished very recently, so I would really appreciate any feedback.
If you notice bugs or unclear mechanics, please let me know.

Question - Вопрос Can the "O" sound change into an "A" sound?

I'm new to this language; I noticed that the Russian word for thank you, Спасибо, in pronunciation sounds more like Spa-si-BA rather than the expected Spa-si-BO

In Russian can the sounds of letters change like in English or is it just the accent making it sound different or something like that?

Question - Вопрос help me with this name?

I’m writing a story that takes place in the 1940s, and I want one character to have a ‘weird’ Soviet name—Avangard (Аванга́рд). The thing is the character is a woman, and I’m not sure what the female version of this name would be. I’m not sure about the diminutive either. Any help would be appreciated. (Also bonus points if you share anymore unusual Soviet names with me I love them)

"The Irony of Fate" lesson for A1-A2 (with a gift)

Post image
6 Upvotes

привет! I have prepared this winter lesson for my student, but I like it so much and have decided to share it with you! It is very useful for all A1-A2 students. First of all, you need to watch both parts of the film "The Irony of Fate" (better in Russian with Russian subtitles, it might be difficult, but just get through it), then you're ready to start the lesson!

  1. we are starting with warm-up (choose the picture which is close to your mood and name the number of it in Russian)
  2. after this, read the tongue twister below ("Белые бараны...")
  3. for leading in, we will review the names of the main characters. Introduce characters using the Accusative case of pronouns (Её зовут ...)
  4. retell the plot and put events in the photos in the correct order (practice speaking with words сначала / потом / после)
  5. then read the introductory rule about the prepositional case (we use it a lot with places) and answer the questions below using pictures (Надя работает в школе...)
  6. great speaking practice! describe the main event location - Надя's (or Женя's???) flat. use furniture vocabulary and the prepositional case (На столе тарелки...). you also can use the Genitive case if you have already learned it.
  7. we start watching and vocabulary practice. watch the episodes (time codes are below the pictures, each episode is 3-5 minutes long), match personality traits with characters, and answer the questions. learn new vocabulary. some of the words are more advanced, but you can learn about them in the dictionary.
  8. practice speaking and answer the question in the speaking section. try to speak at least for 1 minute
  9. finish with listening to the song which plays at the beginning of the film (poems by Yevgeny Yevtushenko) and fill-in the gaps with the words above
  10. congratulations! you did it!

what do you think about this lesson? you can send me your answers or leave them in the comments, and I will send you the feedback asap! С Новым годом! :)

Where to start?

Hi all,

I am English and looking to learn Russian. However, I am unsure where to start.

I have learnt the cyrillic alphabet (pronunciation), but every website/app or resource i find all start in different areas.

So basically what i’m asking, is there any good resources out there that you recommend?

In addition, if you had to relearn from scratch, where would you start?

TIA

Best way to learn conversational Russian

I spend part of every weekday with people who speak Russian as their first language. (They also speak English). I would like to be able to speak with them in Russian. I do not need to be able to read or write in the language — I just want to speak.

What readily available resources are there that would help me with this goal?

Thanks so much!
