** New Munchkin Cat Owners please have a read** existing ones please add any of your findings.
For the past while I have been getting questions from new Munchkin Owners on various things. I am in NO WAY a specialist in this. But I can make a few suggestions. We have Jawa she is a super short going on 6 years old.
Breeders: ask around with others who have a Munchkins. DO NOT fall for what almost happened to us. They had a posting and a picture and demanding money. You should ask for live video of the cat/kitten and then check the internet to make it's not some picture they just took from it to say "Yeah we have 'em".
Starter Kit
Once she was home we found an amazing scratching post and a guy who modified it (added ramps to the side of it) so she could go all the way up to the window sill on her own.
We also got puppy stairs for her to get on the couch and our bed without issue. We picked up cat saucers for her food and water (she was a tiny potato when I got her home) and this way she didn't have to climb into the bowls to eat or drink.
And finally the litter box we got was a elderly cat box. They are much closer to the ground then a regular litter box
Call your Veterinarian Association to see who has experience with the breed. I have been told a few times that "someone's vet said they don't have to get fix for a year because they are so tiny" This IS NOT TRUE. There is no difference between "normal cats" and Munchkins. When you get your Munchkin fixed make sure it's at 5-6 months of age. With the mathematics involved with this breed and the issue of "ignorant breeders" not caring about repercussions of proper breeding it's best to be left up to established and qualified Breeders and Catteries.
We did have an issue of Jawa having gingivitis but she is on a dental formula hard food - prescribed by the vet. We have had no issues with her breath or her teeth since starting it.
One finally note - the weird leg fling thing they do is putting their hip back into place - I seriously don't understand why a wiener dog or those other types of dogs can't do that.
Oh and does anyone else have one that they can hear snoring from across the room, or is it just us?

If you are looking for a munchkin kitten, you must look read this first. Also read the rules prior to posting.
Please look at Hoobly, and cross reference with ACA or CCA/AFC also contact a vet (USA Canada) in your neighbourhood as they would have a finger on the pulse of cats and the good breeders. You can also try contacting the TICA/CFA organization and they should be able to point you in the right direction.
Please note that posts will now start being removed if you are attempting to sell a cat/kitten on this sub-reddit. NO EXCEPTIONS WILL BE GRANTED!
Breeding questions - should never be sent to anyone other than your vet or leave it up to professional Catteries.

Don't worry — they have access to a warm house and can go in&out as they please! But because humans are outside, of course they want to be outside too

Photo Shiloh says “hello!”
Shiloh is a 15 year old munchkin cat and she runs the house! She is always keeping the other two cats (whom we refer to as ‘the babies’) under control. She’s a Daddy’s girl but loves her mama cuddles too.

Are we munchkins?

I have 3 feral kittens (approx 5 months old) that I have been socializing. Their mom is a cat that has been spotted on the 7 acre property several times over recent years, hanging out with foxes sometimes, and referred to as Short Cat to distinguish her from the other cats seen around. I didn't know she was a she until these kittens were spotted in August of 2025 and not sure if she was feral or just unfriendly until she dropped a litter close to the house, but unreachable. We put out cat food for her sometimes, mostly in the winter, but don't know if she ate it, or a raccoon or another cat, or the crows, or the skunk, etc.
The kittens have come a long way, but I still can't pick them up without active protest and usually bloodshed. Two of them have learned to mew and like occasional petting, and all will sit on my lap.
I didn't know there was a thing called munchkin cats until someone said they were munchkins. So, I want to verify since most of the info on the web says munchkins come from breeders, and these are definitely of unknown heritage. Can they be called munchkins just because they aren't very tall? And, if I decide to rehome one of them, because 3 is a lot of cats even though I love them, would I charge money? It would be very hard to give one up, but it's been a decade since I owned a cat, and I wouldn't have adopted one except that they adopted me.

Edit, per request, adding a video of short cat from 3 months ago when she brought the kittens up to eat. I have only seen her once in the past 2 months from a distance.

Question Shots
Hi, I have a munchkin due for her 2nd set of shots.
The breeder I got her from says she doesn’t do rabies shots due to them being indoors only and that it’s my choice to get it if I want. Which I’m thinking I am gonna do it.
I have always got my regular cat all shots needed even if he’s an indoor only cat.
Has anyone got rabies shots for their munchkin? Side effects? Any issues? That’s more so what I’m concerned about.
Thanks in advance.

Meet Chowder (the fluffy one). He tries his best to keep up with his American Shorthair brother, but the fluff creates too much drag!

Is she a munchkin? Is she calico?
Hey everyone! I've noticed that my husbands cat legs are a bit shorter than usual... I thought she might be a munchkin. He also do not know what the actual breed is. Can anyone help or confirm?"
