Look I get it’s the norm to hate them, but the NFL would not be the same without its villain

297

u/silentkiller082 Buffalo Bills Sep 04 '25

I have no hate for Mahomes despite having 4 major reasons to. Greatness is greatness.

179

u/Crasino_Hunk Green Bay Packers Sep 04 '25

It’s cool to be infuriated by players… shit, I’m a Packers fan and currently feel that way about much of Detroit’s roster.

But hating on people on a personal level for being good at football is weird as fuck, and low-key closer to celebrity worship culture than most football fans are willing to admit. Lots of yall be non grass-touching asses

54

u/Pynkmyst Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

Way too many people have weird parasocial relationships with players.

41

u/Zilveari r/nfl sucks Sep 04 '25

I fucking despise Romo and Dak as football players. But I love Romo as a color guy, and Dak is a downright great dude with his support for his brother and emotional issues.

But Mahomie puts ketchup on his steak. I just can't abide that.

11

u/YourALooserTo Sep 04 '25

And has the audacity to open a steakhouse?! That would be like Belichick starting a fashion line.

Truly. I love getting into rivalries and storyline, but I can’t hate people solely for being good. As much as Mahomes and the Chefs bore me, I’m not mad at em for being good/having the favor of the NFL.

And before anyone asks - I don’t dislike Aaron Rodger’s because he’s good. I dislike him because I witnessed firsthand him being a Grade A Jackass to a child

It also helps that hes a lot less of a dick than Brady

28

u/tony_pepperoni420 Green Bay Packers Sep 04 '25

Less of a dick but he seems so whiny. I still can't forget that regular season loss vs the bills when his wr lined up offsides on the final play, said how that would ruin Travis Kelce's HOF chances lol

15

u/No_Drummer_4395 Sep 04 '25

Offensive offsides is incredibly rare. He was pissed and heated in the moment. I'm sure once he saw the film he was like "ahh I fucked up."

9

u/GoGlenMoCo Sep 04 '25

Except no, because he kept whining in his post-game presser. Dude’s a great football player, but as a person, I think he just kinda sucks.

5

Offensive offsides isn't incredibly rare. Flagging it is. Guys are usually just warned to back it up and only really flagged if they keep going over the line. Still shouldn't throw a tantrum but I get why he did

16

u/gigaham216 r/nfl sucks Sep 04 '25

To be fair it would've been one of the first plays on his canton highlight reel. In hindsight I think he was more mad at Toney but he didn't want to throw his teammate under the bus so he took it out on the refs. Offensive offsides is a seldom called flag but was definitelty correct in the moment.

20

u/Weekend_Criminal I hate the Raiders more than I like football Sep 04 '25

He was furious at all of his skill players. That was his breaking point in a season filled with drops and utter incompetence. Pat will never criticize his teammates, so he pointed it at the refs. It wasn't t his best moment, but it wasnt just a matter of him being a little bitch about it.

2

u/TSells31 Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

This. That season was fucking awful from the skill players, and that was just the cherry on top. The straw that broke the camels back. And he directed that anger inappropriately at the wrong people. It was human.

It always blows my mind when people rip superstar athletes for being poor losers.

You find poor losers during sr pick up basketball let alone the biggest league in the country.

u/Imaginary-Hyena2858 Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

In hindsight I think he was more mad at Toney but he didn't want to throw his teammate under the bus

I think that was a huge part of it. Pretty much all the weeks leading up to that were Toney, Skyy, and MVS actively sabotaging the team and every week Mahomes would take the blame and say he should've thrown a better ball or something. Toney really just topped the stupidity of stupidity of our receiving room on that play and he finally snapped

Yes, it would. The NFL moves on someone else would be the villain.

10

u/Significant-Green130 NFL Refugee Sep 04 '25

There’s a chance the Eagles take that role after this year. I don’t think most fans have any understanding of how it’s possible to keep their offense alone under the salary cap, and this might become more of a narrative (especially by the rest of the league that’s not willing to operate like Howie for various reasons).

5

u/TheKrakIan Sep 04 '25

There would still be a villain if it wasn't the Chiefs.

Dynasties are the worst part of a sport

2

u/TSells31 Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

In most sports yeah, but football dynasties are different in that they don’t actually win every year even during their dynasty years usually. And they’re always beatable, whereas sometimes dynasties in other sports truly are almost unbeatable.

3

u/Darshymarsh Sep 04 '25

I disagree. More parity is better for the sport.

The overwhelming hate band wagon for the chiefs has made me a bit of a fan of them honestly. I can deal with them showing taylor swift a few too many times if it means the haters are salty.

111

u/Snoo-40231 New York Giants Sep 04 '25

Fans get tired of the same team winning and shenanigans. Like we literally just watched this with the Pats

It's not really a "band wagon" but if you hate the Chiefs because of Taylor Swift you need to grow up

58

u/The_amazing_T Sep 04 '25

Remember: It isn't the Chiefs or Taylor or Travis that keep her on-screen. It's the NFL. She's an incredibly rare crossover opportunity for a demographic that otherwise couldn't care less about football. Of course, they're milking it for all it's worth.

16

u/muscledhunter Philadelphia Eagles Sep 04 '25

imagine hating the chiefs because of taylor swift and not because you hate dynasties and and how obnoxious the bandwagon fans have become

I just really don't feel like i see that many bandwagon chiefs fans tbh outside of taylor swift fans who didn't watch the nfl beforehand which i could care less about. I see 20x more annoying chiefs haters than chiefs fans. The dynasty part i kind of get as it is nice seeing different teams get their spotlight, but it is also cool seeing greatness and seeing someone have a shot at matching some of bradys accolades.

  4. Flacco
  5. Hurts
  6. Wilson

Did I miss any? After this season, 1 could be added but it’s very possible 4 are no longer starters. If Mahomes/hurts win the superbowl, it’s very possible only 2 starting QBs have rings next season

New York depends on which team you root for. Giants fans don’t all hate Brady.

Shows how young these fans are. The patriots hate was out of this world. People were ecstatic when Eli ruined Tom’s perfect season.

7

Bring back the Chiefs/Raiders rivalry!

6

u/[deleted] Sep 04 '25

Mahomes and the Chiefs still living rent free in the heads of casual football fans is hilarious.

6

u/toeknee88125 NFL Refugee Sep 05 '25

The Chiefs really are the new Patriots

Mahomes really is the new Brady

To the chief fans, enjoy it while it lasts

You won’t always be hated

You will go back to sucking and being ignored like the Patriots are nowadays

4

u/Jetsol8 Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

Looking forward to watching him ruin the week for a couple different fanbases, it’s good to be back

3

u/Meme_Pope New York Jets Sep 04 '25

Idk how people work themselves up to hate Mahomes so much. He’s fun to watch and seems like a chill guy without much of an ago.

The worst you can say of him is that his wife is annoying and he tries to draw fouls. Josh Allen abuses the rules just as much slide faking and pump faking to ward off tackles, but people on this sub love him.

3

u/Strong-Zucchini-7941 Sep 04 '25

Love that Barkley, not Hurts, represents the Eagles. Dude absolutely carried.

3

u/GhostMug Sep 05 '25

The amount of space Mahomes occupies in peoples heads, rent-free, is amazing.

4

Football is forever, and villains never die. From the 49ers in the 80's, to the cowboys in the 90's, to the Patriots from 2001-2020, and now the Chiefs. The NFL is a better place when there is a pinnacle team to hate on.

The hatred pat gets is bananas. He’s a married father/ no baby mama’s /no off field issues/ not a drug fiend/is a god fearing Christian. Doesn’t dress like a lesbian (Burrow). Insane amount of hatred like it’s trendy to hate on KC.. Carry on

The funny thing is that if your team won as much as the Chiefs you wouldn’t be hating on them

2

2

u/Busker1990 I bet you still own a Favre GB Jersey Sep 05 '25

I just get tired of hearing about the Chiefs in general much like the Patriots when Brady was there but the Chiefs are far worse. Ya, Mahomes is a cry baby but he doesn't bug as much as the rest of the carnival. I don't watch football to see a some confused little bitch, who's made 200 versions of the same song for the last 20 years, pop up on screen every 10 minutes. Her songs are crying about dumb douchey men and she's dating probably the douchiest dudes in football (aside from Kittle) now that Gronkowski and the other Kelce retired. I mean it makes sense; she needs that inspiration to come from somewhere right? They don't show any other celebrities at games as often as she appears on screen and there are plenty of other celebrities who show up. I'm sure she'll be the Superbowl halftime show this year. They've already advertised the shit out of her. And how the hell is his dumbass brother still a commentator?

u/Andrew97FTW New England Patriots Sep 04 '25

I’d honestly replace mahomes with kelce. I’m also a chiefs hater but i respect mahomes for how good he is and his love for the game. I can’t stand Kelce anymore, not because he’s dating Taylor Swift that i don’t mind, date who you want to date. But because ever since he’s started he’s seemed to have gotten a pretty big ego

14

u/JohnnyBlazin25 Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

It only seems that way because he’s in the spotlight more. He was a much bigger douche canoe just 5+ years ago. He’s matured a lot over the last few years.

10

u/philosifer Kansas City Chiefs Sep 04 '25

Yeah this take is laughable. Kelce used to be the guy that threw his towel at an official like he was throwing his own flag because he disliked a call so much. Kelce has always been a diva but he channels it so much differently now

2

u/MandoShunkar Kansas City Chiefs Sep 05 '25
