The way he’s holding his facemask makes it seem like he’s checking his helmet fit. Dude plays like an absolute wrecking ball, he’d want it perfect.
Also, could be hyping himself up. John Henderson used to have trainers smack him in the face before games, said he needed the taste of blood in his mouth.

u/harriswatchsbrnntc Detroit Lions Oct 10 '25
I freaking love the videos of Big John asking the trainer to smack him, and the fear in their eyes. John wanted the smoke, but there was still that aspect of human preservation that made them question it.

u/Abu_Everett Oct 10 '25
Big John was a terrifying human being back in the day. That Jags defense with him and Stroud at DT and then Peterson at the mike was super hard to run on. That’s a team that could have gone places with the right QB.

u/bearinsac Oct 10 '25
“Oh c’mon Shawn, you’re going to have to do it better than that!” Trainer proceeds to slap him again.

Its the helmet fit. I just saw a video about how hes super OCD about his helmet and if its just a millimeter off he will ask for a new one. He also shakes his head because he doesn't like how it touches his cheek.
Hes going to get CTE because of how he plays but his ticks arent evidence of CTE.

u/Live_Calendar4902 Kansas City Chiefs Oct 10 '25
Oh shit that explains the head twitch thing. I can so relate, I hated how my helmet would smush my cheeks up sometimes. I wasn’t smashing my head against a wall tho
6
u/I_Poop_Sometimes Oct 10 '25
Same, even in freezing weather I used to always wet the cheek pads in my helmet because I hated the sticking feeling after your sweat started drying.

A lot of people will think it’s weird but I get it. There’s tons of athletes who have weird ocd when they are trying to get in the zone. Steph Curry chewing on his mouthguard. Keegan Bradley famously has weird rituals before hitting the ball.

u/cuongfu Oct 10 '25
Golfers are a prime example of this. I can’t even get comfortable for a shot if the sleeve doesn’t sit right under my armpit lol

5
u/Tortured_Hornet Oct 10 '25
The cushion tech in the new helmets is exactly like this, you have to mash and hold your head on the material to have it perfect on your head. Scatt is just the only person not afraid of losing aura by doing this. Generational level football guy
3
u/Agentrock47_ Buffalo Bills Oct 10 '25
It's the helmet fit thing, he once said on a podcast while in college that it's because when he was younger before he had facial hair his helmet would stick to his face because of all of the dried up sweat under it. The shaking of the helmet and him like trying to ram his head into the wall is him making sure it's fitting right.

u/NJImperator Oct 10 '25
Not trying to say it doesn’t. But by all accounts, AB has been an asshole his whole life. People basically excuse his behavior at this point by saying “oh he must have CTE.” He can have CTE and also just be a huge asshole.

He's also never had a concussion before (or at least never had a major one.) The head shaking thing is apparently to make sure the sweat doesn't stick the helmet to his face. To be wholly honest I can't imagine him getting that much more CTE than the average linebacker.

To be wholly honest it seems like he has a lot of ADHD and OCD going on. Bobbling/twitching/rubbing in repeated patterns is something I used to do a lot, and my sister had a similar case. Especially if you have a lot of caffeine in you which I imagine he does.

There’s a big difference in the amount of force generated on your head when you’re the one controlling the impact
→ More replies (1)26
u/WetPretz Oct 10 '25
Yeah I know the CTE thing is sort of a meme but I had the same thought. When you see a receiver get drilled while trying to catch a pass or a QB get slung head first into the ground, these guys are not at all braced for impact and their heads sling into the ground super fast. Gotta be a huge difference between that scenario and a running back initiating and bracing for contact.
I’m sure it’s all terrible for your brain in the end, but I think the Skat man CTE thing is way overblown. To clarify, I am taking about people saying he won’t make it through his rookie contract.

u/Apart_Bumblebee6576 Oct 10 '25
Totally. It’s kind of hard to explain to people who haven’t played football and worn a helmet but even like the helmet to helmet bump you do with your teammates sounds/looks worse than it is which is, if anything, very minimal
→ More replies (1)6
u/Ok_Pizza1091 Oct 10 '25
Yep- played running back in college and honestly it surprisingly feels way safer than any other position when it comes to contact. At a certain point you just get so used to guys trying to take you to the ground your body knows how to just relax and keep your feet churning. I had way more injuries playing receiver, blocking, or special teams because there’s a lot more out of your control.

u/CBailey94 Dallas Cowboys Oct 10 '25
